I disagree that Tubby hasn't been close in either first round game. The game against Texas the squad was close into the second half. It got out of hand when AJ Abrams hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back threes in the second half. I still remember that vividly. The final score looked bad but I think the Gophers played Texas tough. It's tough to beat a team that shoots 55% from 3.
As for Xavier, they pulled within 6 with about a minute to play. Jordan Crawford buried the game with a 3 and then they added free throws after that. That game wasn't out of hand.
In each game Minnesota essentially got torched by the team's best players. Kudos to AJ Abrams and Jordan Crawford, both very good NCAAB players.
It depends on your perspective I guess. Being competitive should be the absolute minimum. But I don't consider staying close for one half in one game and then cutting a comfortable lead down to six in the final minute being very close to winning. Just my opinion.
