per Marcus:

"With him being in the position he's in, it's tough," Mbakwe said Tuesday. "When we win a game, he's one of the best coaches. When we lose a game, he's on the hot seat. It's tough as players because we want to make our coach look good. Now we have another opportunity to show we're a good team and he's a good coach and he's deserving of everything he's worked for so far. We definitely hear it. And we want to go out there and play for him."

"When things go good, everybody is praising you; when things go bad, you're going to get criticism and negativity," Hollins said. "We're playing for each other. We're playing for the guys in the locker room. We're playing for the University of Minnesota. We don't think about (Smith's job status). We don't worry about that."

Go Gophers!!

The coaching situation will work itself out one way or the other, the guys just gotta lay it all on the line and get as many wins as possible. First up, UCLA.

To not believe that all of the negativism on the forums and in the press is a self fulfilling prophecy is naive. I know that it is only a few loud mouths but congratulations to all of them for continuing to keep our programs down. Here is a thought: try being supportive even in the face of difficult situations and frustrating losses and watch what happens. All I know is all of the negativity has reaped some wonderful long-term mediocrity in Gopher sports.

The acceptance of mediocrity has reaped more mediocrity. There were a TON of excuses made for Tubby's teams underachieving to 6-12 Big Ten records the past two season and very, VERY little "negativity". How did that work out? Those "difficult situations and frustrating losses" that you talk about, just kept on coming for a third year in a row. I think you've seen a fan base that has been extremely supportive to a coach who has not delivered finally come to the realization that he is unlikely to deliver.

There sure was a lot of negativity around this team prior to the loss to Northwestern (again!) or after beating Indiana/Penn State when they went in to lay an egg at Nebraska. It's hilarious to think that one of the most patient/respectful fan bases in the nation is actually too "negative". Just how many years should a coach get to finish in the top half of his conference? finish above .500 in his conference? win an NCAA tournament game? But you're right, it's clearly the press and the fans negative attitude that is the issue and not the recruiting, offensive sets, or coaching style.

If I had a dollar for every time that has been said on this board.............

Every team has fans that call for the coaches head after losses. MN is no different than 99% of the programs out there.

I have fallen off the Tubby wagon, but if the guys believe in him, that is what is important.

Obviously if everyone would "not have accepted mediocrity" we would probably be a top 10 team right now.

When you read the article do you think both kids are supporting Tubby or just Mbakwe? It doesn't seem that Hollins shares quite the same feelings toward Tubby. He sounds more like a kid that just wants to play and not care about whether his coach is going to stay or not. It's hard to get a read on the mood of this team, but honestly it's been hard to figure them out all season.

So the question is: Does Hollins believe in his coach or is he just trying to rise above his coach and his coaches problems?

As long as no one listens to you or believes in you, life is good.

Supporting the Gophers no matter who the coach is "accepting mediocrity."

Yes! When you support a coach who has delivered nothing but mid-level wins in the conference you are supporting the mediocrity he has established.

If you truly support the Gophers you will support Teague making the decisions that will lead to better than average winning percentage in the conference.

(No need to respond, johnboy, you've already said you wouldn't.)

I'm sorry, but how toxic the situation has become about the gopher basketball team this year is not like 99% of the programs out there...closer to .99% of the programs out there.

Funny how Tubby has been in this situation before...

Hang around, maybe Playa will post up the real story.

All you spend time doing on any of these boards is bash Tubby....you're stuff is boring. I need to counter your BS with positivity!

So present a positive hire that Teague can make to bring the Gophers above .500 in the B1G.

I find it humorous that all you do is kiss Tubby's rear and you imagine that your stuff is imaginative and exciting. Bring something new to the game, Parski.

He's a good coach who will be here as our coach next year! So cry all you want.....Boo-Hoo

Wasn't me who said I wouldn't respond. So how do you go about not supporting a coach? Is it by posting on a message board because that sure is going to get Teague's attention!

I don't know who will be the coach next year, but whoever it is I will support. There was a faction of fans who were just waiting for the Gophers to struggle so they could get on Tubby this year. I was at a party a couple of days before the MSU game at Williams Arena and a guy, I'm not going to call him a friend because he can be an idiot, said that the Gophers better win that game or else Tubby is in trouble. And everytime we lost, he pretended he was upset, but you could tell he was really happy. There was a group of fans who had an agenda, and i might not have thought that until I saw it with my own eyes this year.

You support mediocrity. Thanks for making your stand.

LOL...OK sure lets spend another 2.5 million on a buyout when you already have a good coach who has us in the NCAA Tourney last time I checked my bracket. I bet you don't manage your bank account. Keep crying Tiny.

My apologies, I think it was lakes. Sorry.

My guess is that more than enough alumni who provide financial support to the U have already posted their views in person. It's certainly not like I'm the only one who recognizes that mid-level or below in the conference is unacceptable.

This discussion board is just that...a discussion board. We share our views and we spar over the differences. It goes no deeper than that. The folks who claim they are being "better" fans by supporting the emperor who has no clothes are just being prideful and trying to lift themselves up by claiming their own status. It's silly, to be honest with you.

I certainly wouldn't have spent money on a mid-level coach and then given him an extension.

As a fan I am encouraged by the players intent to play hard. At this point you support your coach and strive for the best. How wonderful it could be to start an NCAA run with a victory over one of the most storied and glamorous programs in NCAA history.

I am fine with Teague making the call, keeping or letting go of Smith. But it should be Teague alone. If our out of touch, grey haired alumni are influencing this decision.. that is the one thing that would have me consider turning in my tickets. Why hire Teague in the first place.. and I assure you, there are not countless million dollar donors so I am guessing most alumni that complain donate thousands, not millions, of dollars. They should have zero affect on Teague's decision. Perhaps we should let a professional athletic director make the call.

Now, if Teague decides to keep tubby, will you support the team or just ask that teague be fired?
