Gophers (but not Europe) back in picture for Tayler Hill
Posted on December 18th, 2008 – 6:34 PM
By John Millea
Last summer, Minneapolis South basketball star Tayler Hill eliminated the Gophers from her recruiting list. I was told today by her father, Paul Hill, that the Gophers are now back on his daughter’s radar.

Hill’s top three schools are Texas, Duke and Marquette, with the Gophers ranking behind them at this point.

Paul Hill and Gophers coach Pam Borton were known to have had a falling out over the summer, but they are on better terms now, Hill said.

“Pam and I made our amends,” Paul Hill told me. He said he and his family would be happy to watch Tayler play for the Gophers, especially since the university is not far from their home.

“We have a son [P.J.] playing at Ohio State and we barely get out to see him play,” Paul Hill said.

He also said Tayler Hill has been offered “six figures” to skip college and play professional basketball in Europe. A representative for European teams called with the offer recently, but Tayler Hill has no intentions of doing that, her father said.

“It’s a lot of money but we’re not fooled by something like that,” he said. “We know the value of a college education.”

Tayler Hill, a senior guard, is on pace to become the state’s all-time scoring leader later this season.

Go Gophers!!

Wouldn't that be nice.

I remember seeing an interview done with Hill back when she was an 8th grader I think it was. She said how much she wanted to be a Gopher of course she was young and Whalen was tearing up the Big Ten and all but damn it would be nice to see her stay at home and play. The Gopher Women would get such a shot in the arm by getting a player of her caliber to take the place of Emily Fox next season. For Hill she can stay at Minnesota and be the face of the program for 4 years or she can go to Duke or Texas and be another face in the crowd.

Ugh, who even cares about this recruit anymore? This is such a drawn-out drama-fest. This girl needs to get overself, or her dad needs to. She is an 18-year-old basketball player not a huge difference maker in the world. I hope she goes elsewhere to be quite honest.

Great attitude, heymyfav. The one thing that I have learned the most about talking to recruits, are things are not as they appear. Unless you have a 1st hand experience, you don't know she's drama. From all accounts, I've heard she's a nice girl, that's just trying to make the right decision, like all kids are trying to do. I personally do not watch a total of one minute of women's basketball a year, but I've gotta say, when there's a kid that was picking up offer in junior high, and she's heraleded as possibly the best girl's player to play in Minnesota (or one of them), I guess I wouldn't write her off.

As far as your comment about not making a differnece in the world, I don't think many of these kids will (with the excpetion of a few that go on to do amazing volunteer work, etc.). But do they make a difference in our sports worlds? You can bet they do if they are an impact player. I would be the first to say that someone like Al Nolen has absolutely made a difference in my sports world...getting a point guard with his poise and well rounded game has made my Gopher experiences much more enjoyable!

Just say No Pam, Kris Humphries all over again. Not worth the headache and as for that 6 figure offer overseas:rolleyes:

Weren't these the people that were considering suing the WNBA because they required the girls to go to college first and she thought she should just be able to make the jump ?

Let's hope her folks really want to watch her play, because our program right now is nowhere near what Texas and Duke have built. Our starters would ride their benches.

I heard that we offered but aren't recruiting her. You'd think after what went down three years ago that Borton would be smart enough to let her go. Too bad we could use a guard next year. She's better off at a powerhouse where she ( and her entourage) won't be able to expect anything coming in. She could be a coach killer at the U.

While I respect your opinion an aweful lot JG I can't disagree more. Tayler Hill is a wonderful kid and would bring an awful lot to our Gophers. Why would anyone think she could play for Duke or Texas yet not fit in with the Gophers? If that's the case the entire Gopher coaching staff needs to take a long hard look in the mirror. I certainly don't understand that reasoning. Unless your saying it's a parent thing. But that would bring up the ghost of the rebellion which I thought was dead and buried.

It has much more to do with a parent thing than Taylor, everything I have heard about her as a person has been pretty positive, but Kris was a great kid as well. The talk is that they we're not happy that Royce and Rodney we're getting all the headlines during signing period so that was the deciding factor in waiting for the spring signing, when they would get all the headlines. Nobody has been talking about Taylor and college choice so what better way to increase interest than bring back the local team into consideration to keep it on the radar all winter.

I'm more worried about her dad, then Tayler herself. She has attended multiple Gopher womens games. I just don't understand how all of a sudden Minnesota is back on her radar after the Gophers have been off it for a while. When a player has had a "vocal", i guess you could say, father it hasn't gone well for the Gophers in the past couple years. It is assumed where her boyfriend, Bryce McNeal, Gopher football recruit goes could play a factor as well.

Mom, Dad, and Fans...Lay off the girl, let her make her own decision based on what is best for her, and no one else. If she feels the Gophers are best for her? She should choose the Gophers. If she feels somewhere else is best for her? She and she alone should choose. Dad, leave her alone. Mom, leave her alone. Fans, leave her alone. Ms. Hill: Please do what is best for you. P.S. I personnally hope you choose the Gophers to be best for you, but whatever you choose, I wish you the best. Good Luck.

Well, as the article mentioned Pop and Borton needed to reconcile! Problem does not seem to be with the daughter!

And in the WNBA she will make something like 35 - 40 K a year. By far not the same league as the men. It is just the way it is right now, especially with franchises shutting down! She truly needs to focus on the right school for the sake of education, not pro career since the WNBA, unless things turn around, will probably not be around to much longer.

Dr Don,

Boosters attempting to directly communicate with recruits, including through message boards, is an NCAA violation. GH posters are considered boosters unless one can demonstrate otherwise.

-Her father was talking about a lawsuit to get her into the WNBA when she was in the 8th grade
-He reported death threats last year
-Now claims of six figure offers in Europe to come straight out of South

The only winner in her possibly going to the U is Patrick Reusse. He'd never have to look far for satirical material for an article and Paul Hill would be a lock for the first parent to earn Turkey of the Year honors.

Borton still being employed at the U five years from now are no better than 50/50 if she's here next fall.
