Gophers are expected to hire Stanford defensive coordinator Bobby April as its new rush ends coach.

Burns makes the point of hiring someone that has called plays before as Purdue guy had that experience.

His input should definitely help us defensively. May not have a new DC coordinator but he'll have a new voice in how we play and what we do and when.

Now we need somebody like that on offense if we are not hiring a new OC.

From what I can tell we hired him away from Stanford. Isn’t that kind of crazy for him to take, on paper, a step down? Stanford is a historic ACC school, the guy also seemed to be moderately successful. Did they decide to go a different route and it was mutual?

The names/recognition attached to his coaching alone makes me excited. If we can get that same success going with guys like Karmo, Menz, etc. I’d be pretty happy.

What I read indicated that he was not going to be retained by Stanford’s new HC.

“Rush ends coach”? Really? That’s a paid position? I mean you couldn’t assign that to the Defensive Line Coach, or the Defensive Coordinator? Unbelievable.

And some keep scoffing at those who say there is more money in the assistant coach fund...

LOL! Wut?

He is probably looking at the group of guys he will get to work with, plus it's the Big 10. Better competition means better advancement opportunities I imagine if you're successful?

Growing old sucks, but it beats the alternative.

It's a position they (Fleck) made up. It's somewhere between an outside linebacker and a defensive end.

How much of this impacted the decision on Smith to stay one more year. April will only help Smith get that much better and improve his Draft day stock in 2027. I am sure that was part of the pitch, along with a sweet NIL deal, to keep Smith supplemented by the fact that he really seems to enjoy being apart of the program.

Back in the 80s we had an interior DL coach and a rush LB/DE coach. It’s nothing new. Check out the list of coaches sometime between them and the administrative staff. There’s like 30 folks on PJ’s staff.

That said, with all the knuckleheads on here crying about how poor we are and how we can’t afford to pay assistant coaches Coyle probably dug through his couch cushions for spare change to pay this guy.

PJ didn’t use all of asst coaches pool from last season. (Pair and a Spare podcast).

Seems like a great hire, PJs staff lacks experience. Next I’d like to see us hire a QB coach so Harbaugh isnt wearing two hats, maybe this will help retain young QBs and prepare them better for this Pro Style offense

It’s fairly common from what I’ve seen, it just may be called something different or lumped into another title. I don’t think it’s an official title but I’ve also seen coaches referred to as Joker, Bandit, Sniper, etc coach, and that’s objectively more dumb than rush end.

Feels like PJ may have brought in April as DC-in-waiting to replace Collins if the defensive unit doesn't improve next year.

It is unreal that we have people complaining that we hire position coaches
Never ceases to amaze me just how little it takes to annoy some people....and due to the wonders of the internet they have somewhere to go complain about it as well. :)

The irony is rich...

He also brought in Kane and Kane left after one season. He was ants an experienced play caller in the room. NFL and B1G experience doesn’t hurt.
