Gophers Announce Series with USC, Future Schedule Additions

Who wants to make the road trip in 2011 to USC?

I'm totally down with that. This is great news for our program! This shows a winning mind-set...we may not be padding our schedules with 4 cupcakes, but I think this is a huge step in the right direction.

I commend the football program in really stepping up their schedule!

USC series officially 2010 & 2011, plus more schedule news

Guess the poster at GPL was right about the years...USC replaces Washington State on the schedule.

Also updated the years for UNLV and Air Force, finally announced San Jose State, and made public future games with South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Western Illinois and Ohio.

EDIT: I see GopherLady beat me to it. That's why she gets paid the big bucks.

WOW!!!! A major hat tip to Coach Brewster for taking on such a huge challenge and being a man of his word. He said from day one we would upgrade the schedule and holy moly have we done so!!!! Fricking USC in TCF Bank Stadium in two years!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go Gophers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guarantee you, I will be in the LA Coliseum on 9/3/2011.

I'll be there too! Giddy-up!

Although I am hoping I get a chance to be in LA for a Gopher game sooner than that ;)

Unfortunately it looks like the NDSU fans will have a reason to troll the boards for the next 2 and half years though

Part of me feels that this is crazy on our behalf, but wow! Thats pretty exciting.

Sept 18, 2010. A day that will either be one of the best in Gopher History......or will suck almost as much as the last game in the dome. Only 1 year and 8 months to find out....

Even though we will probably lose, this is big for the program. No doubt we will get national attention by playing USC, since ESPN and co. love to talk about USC all the time. And if we somehow pull off an upset, I can only imagine what a boost that would be.

The Gopher Nation is, almost, going to Pasadena. Haha sorry I had to... Hopefully we will one of those two years for a rematch.

????

I thought getting to a top bowl game to improve our support was a top goal? Can you get to a top bowl with our fan support and four or more losses per year?

The nice thing is that we will either have (barring injuries or unforseen issues) a 4 year starting senior quarterback for this game or a quarterback so talented he was able to beat out a 4 year starting senior.

What this does as far as a top bowl game goes, is that if we beat USC and have a good record we're a lock. If we lose to them and still have a good record, it's a maybe just as if we had never played them. It's really a no lose situation for us. It can only help, unlikely to hurt.

And if we're comitted to a good program then we' shouldn't be concerned about bowl eligibility. Losing one NC game to improve our team shouldn't make a negative difference.

At least the game won't be an 11am start.

The Gophers will play one game in LA in 2011 and the Vikings will play 10 games there in 2012.

Wow!! Thats pretty cool! Although, we can now add another loss to the schedule!! But at least these will be to a legit team.

So you'd rather go back to 2003 and schedule Tulsa, Troy State, Ohio and Lafayette? To each their own.

Did you get beat up by a Vikings player or something? You seem pretty obsessed with the Vikings and the possibility of them moving to LA.

OK, I'm probably THE only person in the world this affects, but I'm bummed they've cancelled the Wash St. series. I was planning on getting out there in 2011 as I have a good friend who lives in eastern Washington state. But still, getting to see USC in person next year will be awesome!

Go Gophers!

You tell me what the goal is and I will try to think of ways of accomplishing that goal. It seemed to me that if we want to get to a January bowl game we will want to win some games and build team support. But then, I don't know what your goal is.

Agreed 100%. A loss won't hurt us since we won't be expected to compete with USC. A win? Wow....

This is great news

Very exciting, I'm an SC fan first, and a Gopher fan 2nd...but either way I will be happy! It's great exposure for the program, and I will have tons of family visiting from LA for this game. SC also usually brings the upperclassmen band members, so that makes it pretty fun too.

it will be brewsters 4th year, and should feature his most talented team. I think the gophs can make it competetive...the gophs will be better than LY's Nebraska team, or this year's Virginia team.

on the flipside, the gophs will be facing probably the best team they've faced in a long time in terms of size and speed...it will be a monumental task. but it does set them up to compete better throughout the remainder of the season and in big10 play.

for any gopher fans travelling to LA in 2011, I will be sure to give you the heads up on what to do/where to stay/tailgating options. the coliseum is a great time.

Good luck Gophs!!

I think the goal is to build a winning program. Playing cupcakes is not the way to do that. To get to a Jan 1 bowl game (Outback or better) typically means no more than 2-3 B10 losses. Assuming we were to finish 3rd/4th in conference with 2-3 B10 losses a loss to USC wouldn't hurt us...especially not if the L would have been replaced by a W over a cupcake.

Don't be too sure that we'll play at USC on 9/3/11

Typically the opening weekend of college football does not feature many marquee games. Now that the NFL opens their season the weekend after Labor Day ABC will pick up a game of potential national prime time telecast on Labor Day evening (Monday Night Football !). This past year they picked up the Tennessee at UCLA. Past years games include Miami (FL) playing Florida State.

This would be the type of game that ABC /ESPN would love to pick up as it features two teams from large TV markets and from BCS conferences. Bottom line - don't book that airfare quite yet. ;)

From SC's perspective, I think this is the equivalent of the NDSU game for Minnesota. It is basically a no-win situation. From our perspective it is a total win-win. From my perspective, it is a bigger win-win, given that I live in LA.

I disagree completely. It’s nowhere near the same thing.
1) UM is D-I, not FCS.
2) UM is in a BCS conference
3) A loss would likely dash USC's national title hopes but would not change their chances in the Pac-10. Unless we sucked it up the rest of the year it prob wouldn't hurt their BCS at large chances either (if someone else wins the Pac-10). If you think a L to the Gophs will somehow hurt USC’s cred then I think you are underestimating how strong a program Pete Carroll has built.
4) A W over an average Gopher team is a bigger boost to their BCS standings than a W over a non-BCS school (exception being a BCS buster like this years Utah). It helps the perception that USC is willing to schedule a tougher schedule. We’re not OSU but we’re better than San Jose St.

Honestly, a “no-win” mindset is how we ended up with 3 non-BCS cupcakes and a FCS each year. Its not the mindset of a strong program and USC is a strong program.
