Per U of MN Press Release:
ORLANDO - The University of Minnesota Dance Team and Team USA took home a gold and silver medal at the International Cheer Union (ICU) World Championships, today in Orlando at the Wide World of Sports Complex located at Walt Disney World Resort.

The world champions defeated Japan and Mexico in the Pom division, who took home silver and bronze medals in the pom category. Minnesota and Team USA took silver in the Jazz division. Japan won gold, while Mexico took home the bronze in the same category.

The 2025 competition marked the third time Minnesota represented the US National Team as it also did so in 2010 and 2014. With the gold medal in 2025, it marks the fourth time the Gophers have won gold and the third time coming home with a silver medal. Minnesota also previously won gold in the Pom in 2014 and silver in Jazz. In 2010, the Gophers took home gold medals in both Jazz and Freestyle Division (Pom) in 2010 and silver in Hip Hop.

Prior to the ICU World Championships, the Gophers won the Pom national title for the third straight year at the Universal Dance Association Dance Nationals, also in Orlando. They also took second in Jazz for the second straight year and most recently won a national championship in Jazz in 2023. Minnesota is the gold standard in dance competition and has earned 23 national championships – the most in the nation – since 2003.

The ICU was formed in 2004 and is the recognized world-governing body of Cheer (Cheerleading & Performance Cheer). The ICU comprises 120 member National Cheer Federations / 10 million athletes on all continents, hosts World Championships consistently welcoming over 70 nations, many global continental and regional championships, and continues to grow as a unified voice for all those who are dedicated to the positive advancement of cheerleading throughout the world.
