Gophers-Aggies Postgame Discussion

Big improvement over two years ago, when NMSU made us look bad in our own stadium. Great running game and stopping the run. But we have to pass better than .500 to win in the B1G and Nelson can't run that much without risking injury. Kicking game much improved over previous years.

We are a better team than last year's edition, and that team was better than the year before.

I want to see the team improve from game to game the entire year.

Didn't hear K J Maye's name called much tonight.

when the breakdown is 43 rushes to 15 passes, there's not much opportunity. but overall, i don't get why we don't run the simple PA pass crap that everyone does that works super well. like the old fake run left w/ the TE lined up there and instead of blocking he just sprints across the formation and into the flat on the naked boot. it works every dang time and our power run game sets up perfectly for it. we need to use our TE's more as a whole as i think offensively they are much more of an advantage against opposing teams LBs than our WRs are against opposing teams CBs

We have scored 95 points the first two games. And sure we have 5 td's from special teams and defense, but there is no reason to show any more of the playbook to the upcoming teams than we need to. Get prepared for next week, I expect it be to even more vanilla. Just pounding it down their throats. I don't expect them to go deeper into the playbook until San Jose State at the earliest.

We've taken two teams to the woodshed that we should have. There are a lot of teams that would trade for our 2-0 record.

I have been hoping the same to be true. Run the most vanilla passing game we can so others don't have as much tape to break down. It sounds good, I'm just not convinced it is true?

I don't like to bash college athletes but we must have the worst WR corp in the Big 10. The OL was fantastic last night!

Like Jay Sawvel twitted, the win was great but the team can always improve.

IMHO, we need to get the receiving end of the business going as alluded to earlier. It is not so much vanilla as it is flavorless that plagues the WR play.

Secondly, we are going to get killed in B1G if we don't improve our pass defense. They are much better than last year and they will get better.

By the time of the SJSU game, I'd like to see more imaginative plays to open up the receiving game. Nelson seems to prefer run first than pass during zone reads at the moment. I can't say I blame him when there is yet no high comfort level with the WR corps. I don't like to see a Marquies Gray type of injury in mid-season.

Thank goodness we have a stable coaching staff. You can be sure that Jerry Kill will coach up his players to their potential. Many of these kids that where overlooked or under-rated out of high school can become good reliable to great players if they have enough talent under Kill's system. It does take about three years. Look at what is happening with Kill's former NIU players. A few of them are getting looks by the NFL.

We are beginning to see glimpses of Jerry Kill's system working. I like that he recruits players to fit his system. Once they start winning in time those 4-5 star caliber players will start to give the Gophers serious looks.

Get your cataract surgery sooner than later. It does improve the color resolution.

Anyone else Williams totally muff that block that got Nelson sacked? Williams still had a nice game, but that was exactly what the coaches have been saying for some time about him. That he can run the ball, but he can't/won/t block & it limits what they can do with him because the defense pretty much just has to key on him. If he's in the game it's a rushing play, if he's not it could well be a pass.

Not ready to say Williams and Cobb are the new Maroney and Barber, but it was nice to see two backs be really productive last night. I realized they were playing a small DL, but I liked the thunder and lightning approach with those two and adding in a running QB element. I really like our potential to run a dangerous read option offense. It's still early and a work in progress.

i wouldn't really say thunder and lighting.. more like thunder and more thunder

Looking at the two games alone can make you feel good, but when UNLV and NMSU gave up 114 to their other opponents and Texas got drilled by BYU we really won't know anything until SJSU and Iowa come to town.

Would like to see less soft coverage from the DB's. Tough to jump the route when you're playing 7 yards off the receiver. The Iowa game will set the tone for the season.

True but 2 years ago NMSU beat us at home and UNLV should have beat us last year in Vegas. Neither team was exactly a powerhouse when we play them last times. Can we at least say major improvement.

It doesn't matter if we crush our non conference opponents. If we still are 2-6 in the Big Ten then there has been no improvement in my eyes.

I have to say I have really appreciated your comments here. They have been calm, insightful, critical when needed, and forward looking. Did I mention patient also?

Last season the team won four ooc games and two Conference games, was invited to a bowl game and lost the bowl game for an overall 6-7 record. I could see a case being made that IF our team won four ooc games and two conference games, was invited to a bowl game and then won the bowl game for a 7-6 record that a 2 win Conference total could actually qualify as an improvement over the 2012 season.

For our Golden Gopher Football Program, MORE wins are always better than LESS wins. However, the number of wins in Conference play indicates our level of competitiveness within our conference. It can also impact our all-important bowl participation invitations. To fail to be invited to a bowl game is always a real problem...

wren - What you are saying is correct and obvious. Saying it over and over doesn't make it any MORE correct or obvious but saying it LESS would be better.

This program has GOT to win more conference games and NEEDS to be invited to bowl games MOST seasons and NEEDS to win some of those bowl games. Period.

Say: has anyone seen anything from that killjoy character. He just about always attaches himself to my posts. I'm stating to wonder if he is ill...or just plain missing in action? I'm sure everyone always looks forward to his pithy, unworthy comments that he attempts to add right after my posts. Is anyone else as fortunate as I am to have him following them around? Well, if anyone happens to see the pathetic little killjoy , let him know that he is certainly welcome to honor my presence any time. You know, you have to feel kind of sorry for a pathetic little pest like killjoy. I suppose he can't even help him/herself, which ever the killjoy case may be.

Having a poor, stray killjoy is kind of like having some unwanted stray puppy who just follows you around all the time. I worry that maybe in his sad little state of mind he may have wandered out onto the street...he is so helpless and hapless, that would be a real shame. "Here killjoy...Here killjoy..." Maybe someone will care enough to go looking for you...
