First an apology: I received a heads-up that Jerry Kill would be on at 9:30, which he was and I was prepared. Once again, however, the Gremlins struck. Just before the interview was to start, my internet connection went blank and then a message was sent, "Internet Explorer Cannot Display Page." After shutting down and rebooting, I was able to get the first segment's last questions and those after a commercial break.

Frustrating for couple reasons: a) I look forward to the show and transcribing; b) I've changed my schedule of activities to listen and transcribe the show, and then I lose my internet connection. Not sure what the solution is . . . end of my rant!

Comments and responses that I heard are as follows, when I got reconnected:

1) Coach Kill was talking about Berkley Edwards play in yesterday's scrimmage. Kill said Edwards, not surprising for a freshman running back, needs to work on his pass protection. He went onto say that Edwards is "Bigger than most people think (about 190 pounds and similar in size to a running back at NIU that ran successfully against the Gopher a few years back)." He also said Edwards is also stronger and it showed in some other runs (of 3 and 4 yards) that people may not have noticed in yesterday's scrimmage.

Sid than cited Donavahn Jones, Kill replied, "He's an athlete, no question . . . Berkley and Jones have been gifted." Kill sounded excited about their speed and quickness.

2) Sid turned his attention to the defense by asking if there was any one area that stood out: "Linebackers have really stepped up and recruiting has helped." He cited the size and play of De'Vondre Campbell (6-5, 215 pounds). Sounded pleased with his athleticism and being smart and that he is quickly picking up the defensive schemes.

Kill also mentioned the play of Nick Rallis, but didn't elaborate. He also mentioned Roland Johnson and his recovery from surgery, as well as a true freshman - "Hank Epke did some nice things."

Kill spoke highly of Ra'Shede Hageman saying he was a unique player . . . "tremendous future . . . tough to block."

3) Sid asked if the team is better than last year's group: "We've gotten better, bigger, stronger, but so has everyone else," he replied. He credited the strength and conditioning and academic staffs for the team's improvement.

He, again, said the team is very young and will probably only start 1 or 2 seniors on offense and 3 or 4 on defense. He expects to be playing a lot of redshirted freshmen and sophomores.

4) Mona asked two questions.

a) Center position: Jerry Kill sounded very pleased with the play and progress of Jon Christenson. He said Christenson has recovered from surgery that he underwent during the summer for a "high ankle sprain." He added, "Jon will keep getting better and better . . . works hard."

Tommy Olson has been looking good at center; however, he mentioned a bad snap in yesterday's scrimmage. He also said Olson can play guard.

He also mentioned Ernie Heifort as improving at the center position as well; however, he, as Olson did, had a bad snap when in the shotgun formation . . . "We can't have that."

He said Zac Epping could also play center, but that's not the plan - at least he hopes he doesn't have to use Epping at center.

Kill stressed the importance of the center position and the decisions that they need to make in calling out line signals. He called the centers "Quarterbacks up front."

He closed the topic by saying all three centers are doing a good job, however, they need to correct the problem of bad snaps.

b) Mona's second question was related to redshirting players: In many cases, according to Kill, they don't know until about the third game (he referenced Nelson last year). However, they try to ascertain and determine the year's redshirts by the first game.

5) Sid asked Kill if the Gophers are a Big 10 caliber team: Kill quickly responded, "We'll see . . . we'll have to prove it (Kill cited the team's lack of success in conference play in recent years) . . . moving forward with the program - step in the right direction - doesn't happen overnight . . . we have to recruit not select."

6) Kill was asked if any true freshmen would play this year: "There's a chance, we have some gifted kids." He then said they'd know more about the freshmen very soon, "We'll go in the "grind" this week." The upcoming, hard practices will tell a lot about the players (freshmen) readiness to see the field as true freshman.

7) Mona closed today's questioning by referencing an introduction of coach Kill by his wife, Rebecca, at a recent Dunkers gathering, which was praiseworthy, according to Dave: Kill, laughing, said it was "outstanding." He continued laughing saying she lied in her introduction. He referred his wife as a "Saint with a one-way ticket to heaven . . . I'll be working my way in."

I regret I missed the first part of today's show. I'll have an addendum to this summary after I listen to Killjoy's podcast thread.

Go Gophers!!

P.S. After Kill left the program, Dave asked Sid about yesterday's scrimmage. Sid said he was more impressed with the defense . . . he thought Isaac Fruechte looked good at receiver, however . . . Nelson had a good first series. Both agreed it's hard to gain too much information from the scrimmages - Sid's opinion, they'll know a lot more about the team after the first game. However, Sid did say, "A lot will depend on Nelson . . . has some good receivers (he'll have to get the ball to wide receivers)." Sid said the Gophers got three players this year that they didn't get in the past: Berkley Edwards, Alex Mayes, and Drew Wolitarsky.

Don't feel bad, DL. You still do more work here than any dozen of us combined.

Thanks DL. I can now take beer #11 off the wall and put it where it belongs.

I am not a computer geek however; I think the problem may be with CBS Minnesota website and their capability to handle the internet broadcast. It could be the most listened to hour on 830. And if they reach some kind of limit, bang Internet explorer cannot display page. So don't blame yourself, you modem, or your computer or internet explorer. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Someone with more computer capability, confirm or deny this.

DL Thank You for every thing you do.

I appreciate that you wrote all of this up. Remember all the hype for Tommy Olson and his brother coming into college. Just think, he's now going to be a backup center his senior year.

I don't care how much you missed...I appreciate what you have for us.

Let's see it seems that you don't follow the program enough to see that Tommy is a Junior not a Senior. If you don't know that you really don't know what's going on. Both players were starters and lost their positions due to injury, they both could work their way back to being starters because it's a really close competition. Tommy agreed to learn the center position for the good of the team not because he couldn't play guard.

Nice to see that you didn't forget to take your asshole pills this morning. Big deal, I mixed up two guys with the same last name. It doesn't negate the fact that they will both be backups for the coming season, a long way from what their potential suggested during their recruitment. I hope they can turn it around, but pending injuries they probably won't be starters for the rest of their careers. As Christenson is only a sophomore and will likely be the starter in 2014 if he stays healthy this year.

Thanks DL, don't know what you do for a job, but should be a sports broadcaster, writer. You shouldn't feel bad about any of your reports.

Ed Olson was sick yesterday. He'll start at LT against UNLV.

Ed Olson, the likely "starter" at LT, had the flu. As good as Tommy is, we now have guys that can challenge him at guard and at center. That's a good thing. "Starting" is a relative term in CFB today. Who will get the most snaps? The better players.

I would take the Olson brothers in a heartbeat on any team, any time. They have class and maturity beyond their years. There's a lesson there.

But starting is the only thing that several GH'ers understand, highwayman.

Ed will be a NFL draft pick this year. If he isn't good enough to start the whole B1G should shaking in their boots.

I suppose that's true. My only point was that its surprising that they aren't looked at as premiere Big Ten players considering their potential.

Ed Olson is locked in a battle with Lenkiewicz right now for the starting LT spot. The competition is legit, it's not guaranteed that Olson will be the starter. I'm not sure if Olson just hasn't progressed, or if Lenkiewicz is really that good.

Who plays where, when, starter, or sub...competition is the key, and Coach Kill will play the top competitor first, with second being second and get plenty of playing time. Being a starter is simply being on the field first. Being a starter is like rules and times...all are tentative, subject to change without notice, based on a variety of conditions.

FYI, I'm 66 and retired; however, I remain busy in community affairs and other projects of interest.

In my early years - following college (Moorhead State College - BA degree), a stint in the Army (Vietnam-Era Vet), and a year at Brown Institute - I was news director at the local radio station of the community in which I presently reside, Knoxville, Iowa. My primary duties included the gathering, writing and reporting of local news events. I also did DJ work (enjoyed spinning the wax platters). I thoroughly enjoyed my brief broadcasting career.

After a couple years, I made a career change, which I also enjoyed immensely and found extremely rewarding.

Long story short, life's been and is good. I've been blessed with a great wife and children.

Now, if I only live long enough - it would be grand on the sporting side of things - to see the Gophers play football as they did when I was a young boy (conference titles and a national championship).

Please forgive the human errors that occasionally crop up in my threads.

Peace! And thanks to all for your gracious remarks.

Go Gophers!!

Thanks for the insight. We are certainly are lucky to have you here. I will post the podcast when it becomes available. When that occurs can vary from Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon.

The word "starter," especially for an o-lineman, is not a relative term. It's specific to the player that starts the beginning of the football game. You know, when the offense takes the field for the first time, the 5 lineman who run out onto the field? The players starting the game on the O-line, barring injury or other unforseen circumstances, are the better football players.

You are young enough to be Sid's grandson

+1 The offensive line starters tend to play the vast majority of snaps, if not all of them in a tight game

Yep, you want continuity on the line so rotating players generally isn't a good idea. It still happens, but being the starter on the O-line has a lot more meaning than say, being the starting WR on this team.

JK mentioned he does not want/pla/intend to switch out qbs. interesting.
he is either using his poker face or if we do see platoon qbs the offenese is swirling the drain.

i think he is still planning on using platoon qb strat.
