GopherHole's Weekly Sports Huddle Summary: Coach Jerry Kill - 8/18/13

JK mentioned he does not want/pla/intend to switch out qbs. interesting.
he is either using his poker face or if we do see platoon qbs the offenese is swirling the drain.

i think he is still planning on using platoon qb strat.

In the way back it was the 1st team offense that got the 2nd team out there. Get a three TD lead In the first half maintain the lead or expand it in the third. Then get the 2nd Team QB and Running back some time with the first team line. If that goes well and the game is at hand, then sub in linemen, and receivers for the end of the third and all of the fourth. You develop players, depth, and save some snaps on the O line and first team running backs. We have seen that buzz saw, and failed to recognize it or implement it.

My understanding and interpretation of what Kill is saying is that he will use a second QB as a change of pace or for a breather but that he plans to go with a primary QB.

I just took a look. the run killed us but A Weber played a great game
JK is about the run....re: of position. i'll shut up about platoon qbs now

ADDENDUM

Questions, comments and responses that I missed yesterday (1st part of show). Thanks, Killjoy, for posting the podcast.

1) Sid opened the questioning by asking Kill to size up the team after Saturday's scrimmage: Kill responded, "We're not disappointed . . . we did some good things . . . we're making progress . . . had two bad snaps . . . looking for improvement."

Overall, Kill sounded pleased with the team's effort and play in the first scrimmage, especially since they haven't had the advantage of two-a-day practices because of summer school, which has just ended. Rules require you can only practice once-a-day when school is in session.

2) Sid asked about the quarterbacks in the scrimmage: "Philip (Nelson) did some good things with the clock . . . can't take a sack in a two-minute offense . . . Mitch Leidner did some good things in the run game . . . Streveler showed some tremendous athletic ability - scored a touchdown . . . Donavahn Jones did a good job . . . Conor Rhoda made a nice play . . . (all of the) quarterbacks did some good things . . . feel good about the quarterback position and where we're at."

By his tone, Kill did not sound concerned about the quarterbacks; however, he sees plenty of room for improvement. The mistakes made yesterday (Saturday) are correctible, and for the young QBs it's matter of time (learning curve), getting adjusted to the college game.

3) Sid said Northwestern uses a two quarterback system that has been very successful. He wanted to know if Minnesota has similar plans: "We're not going to be alternating quarterbacks every couple series; that's all I'll say about that . . . we'll utilize what we have," Kill quickly responded.

4) Sid wanted to know if Kill was happy with the team's progress: Yes, where we're at . . . we need to clean some things up . . . evaluate personnel . . . pleased with the team's attitude."

5) Mona asked about the receivers: Kill reminded everyone about the team's youth at the wide receiver position, and he sounded quite positive about the personnel. Players he mentioned were: Isaac Fruechte (rs jr), Derrick Engel (senior), "Logan Hutton (rs jr.) has had a good camp." . . . K J Maye (so). He went onto say the receivers "fundamentally need to get better . . . did a good job of blocking and catching the ball (in the scrimmage) . . . we'll be fine."

6) Mona asked about Berkley Edwards: "Berkley has a chance be a petty good player . . . comes from a good family (football skills) . . . has some good stuff (can take a bad play and turn it into a good play)."

The rest of Kill's comments about Berkley Edwards are in the original summary.

Go Gophers!!

"Philip (Nelson) did some good things with the clock . . . can't take a sack in a two-minute offense..."

Go Gophers!!

Hopefully he learned from that moment. I found it a little disappointing that Nelson didn't call his timeout right after that sack, but instead Kill had to call it for him.

Three questions I have that I'm not sure anyone can answer:

1. I know Bobek had a viral issue. Since he wasn't mentioned in the center conversation do we read between the lines and assume he will miss the season? Any recent update on him?

2. A lot of speculation in the past about Dexter Foreman being a change of pace QB, but thus far I haven't heard word one about him practicing. Will he end up just being one of those players that's on the team but doesn't see the field? Change of position? Transfer?

3. How close is Coach Kill to determining the kicking/punting depth chart?

I can answer #2. Foreman is not part of the 105 players that are practicing this fall. He's not in the picture.

The only thing additional about Bobek is a report that a viral infection of the heart often takes a full year to recover from. I would think if thats true Coach Kill will be his normal cautious self and hold him out all year. I see a medical wavier in Bobeks's future.

The Big Ten took a year away from his eligibility. But doesn't he still gets five years to complete his eligibility? If so, he wouldn't need a waiver. Let me know if this is wrong.

I'll chip in what I can offer:

1. I know Bobek had a viral issue. Since he wasn't mentioned in the center conversation do we read between the lines and assume he will miss the season? Any recent update on him?

He has lost a lot of weight and consequently likely a great deal of functional strength as well. He already was pretty small for a Big Ten lineman, so I would presume that he'll be out this year to regain his strength and size. I would never say never, but any on-field contributions he makes this year would be a bonus.

A lot of speculation in the past about Dexter Foreman being a change of pace QB, but thus far I haven't heard word one about him practicing. Will he end up just being one of those players that's on the team but doesn't see the field? Change of position? Transfer?

He isn't on the 105-man camp roster. Kill talked about the QBs in camp and Rhoda was mentioned, meaning a walk-on true freshman made the camp roster ahead of a scholarship player in his 3rd year on campus. It also means that there are at least 5 guys (Nelson, Leidner, Streveler, Jones, and Rhoda) ahead of him at QB, all of whom are younger and less experienced. I'd guess he'll ride out his time as a roster spot given that he's already used his RS year and would have to transfer soon if he still wants 2 years to play at his new location.

3. How close is Coach Kill to determining the kicking/punting depth chart?

He mentioned that he wants to let his specialists know their role at least a few days in advance (I believe 3-4 was cited specifically) so that they can prepare themselves mentally. So I would guess that the players themselves will know by Saturday or Sunday of game week. When us rubes will know is another issue altogether.

As far as question number three I believe Kill indicated that he wanted to make the decision no later than 5 plus days before the game. That was to allow the players enough time to prepare (mentally?) for the game. He didn't say he wouldn't do it sooner, but he didn't sound like he was in a rush to do it sooner.

Forgot to say thanks earlier this week but thanks for all the great answers Jaymill, NSMike, dpodoll68 and Killjoy!
