Dave Mona was back on the Sports Huddle after a week hiatus. He joined Sid Hartman in questioning Coach Jerry Kill on the Sports Huddle.

1) Sid opened the show saying - according to Gopher Illustrated – that there a lot of out-of-state recruits at this year’s summer camps. Sid wanted to know if the university could pay the recruit’s travel expenses to attend the camps: “No. That’s against NCAA rules . . . that’s what makes it tough – long way from home . . . more in-state focus during camps,” said Kill. Kill said the schools in Michigan and Ohio have an advantage in recruiting since the areas they recruit are in their backyards; whereas recruits from those areas and across the country have great distances to travel to Minnesota. Nevertheless, there have been recruits from across the country at this year’s camps.

Later on in the program, Kill said they have one more camp, which will be conducted on July 20th. He said the camp is filling up quickly and that some of the campers who have been attending other camps this summer will be in attendance. So more out-of-state recruits will be visiting the Gopher camp and campus.

2) Sid asked if they have offered any scholarships to players that have attended the June camps: Kill replied (laughing), “Yes. Several.” Obviously he can’t give any names as to who’s been offered. Sid persisted in trying to get an exact number of offers, however; and Kill declined to give a number and that was when he answered, laughing, “Yes. Several.”

3) Dave Mona raised the question of players that come to camp who are tested at a position other than what they play in high school. He cited Eric Murray as an example of player who made a position change as a result of his workouts at the Gopher camp: “We’ve done that this week – work kids at another position in camp,” Kill answered.

Kill went on to say that he said frequently that Brock Vereen would play at the next level. Vereen was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the recent NFL Draft, and he expects Vereen will play. When he finished his comments about Brock Vereen, he immediately said he expects Eric Murray to play in the NFL when his career at Minnesota concludes. There was no equivocation in his assessment of Murray’s abilities as a defensive back.

4) Dave Mona said, according to recruiting services, Minnesota has recruited 3 offensive linemen, which appears to be an emphasis in this year’s class: Kill responded, “Offensive line is a big emphasis for us.” He said they’ll sign 4 and maybe 5 offensive linemen this year. He cited the number of upper class linemen on the team as a factor in recruiting this year and the need to replace those players in this year’s class.

Kill also said they were in on some out-of-state players, and, as a result, “Most important thing for us is getting kids in for early games.” IMO, he was talking about recruits from across the country that didn’t attend the summer camps at the U and some of the recruits were offensive linemen. Of course, he’d like them to see the campus and the program when the autumn weather is nice in the Twin Cities.

5) Sid wanted to know if there were any position changes after seeing the team in spring drills and during the summer workouts: Kill said from an offensive standpoint he doesn’t see too many “moves,” and then he added that he won’t know until fall camp begins in August, especially with the incoming class of recruits. He said he expects many of the freshmen will be coached at multiple positions.

On the defensive side of the ball, Kill mentioned the versatility of Damarius Travis: “Damarius Travis can be moved around a lot in the secondary.” Kill likes Travis’ size (6-2 210 pounds), athleticism and versatility. He mentioned that Travis can play safety and corner.

6) Dave Mona asked about the future of the fullback position: “You look in the NFL you see them (fullbacks) . . . Stanford does,” replied Kill when answering Mona’s query. He also said you do see more H-Back offenses; however, he said Wisconsin will take a fullback each year in recruiting, unless they change their offensive scheme.

Kill closed the question by mentioning several offenses that are run in college ball and that frequently many of the teams look alike, as a result, “It’s good to be different.” He likes to give opponents something different to prepare for.

7) Sid wanted to know what players, if any, have really stood out in spring ball and during the summer workouts: Kill quickly said he was impressed with several of the freshmen that arrived on campus for summer school and workouts; however, he also said, he would prefer to redshirt the entire class. He expects, however, some of the freshmen will be seeing the field in 2014.

In answering Sid’s question, Kill cited the following five players:
a) “Jonah Pirsig has easily stood out – spring and summer.”
b) “Scott Epke (has gone from 280 to 305 pounds) runs very well . . . stepped up his situation.”
c) “Cameron Botticelli has done some good things.”
d) “De’Vondre Campbell close to 240.”
e) Desmond Gant. Kill said Gant is “raw” but “More athletic than we thought.” (Although he acknowledged Gant being raw (diamond in the rough) he sounded excited when talking about the recent signee. He said he can see Gant playing linebacker and defensive back.)

Go Gophers!!

Thanks DL. Enjoy the rest of your day seeing how you made my day with your excellent summary.

Super job, DL. I love where this team is headed.

Thanks again DL!

Really looking forward to seeing how guys like Gibson, Gant, and Elmore develop and where they end up position-wise. This recruiting class has all sorts of potential.

How many times has Coach Kill mentioned Jonah Pirsig? He seems to be the first name off his tongue when ever he is asked about stand out players.

Thanks DL! I don't think it can be overstated how awesome you are!

Is there any NCAA rules against having traveling camps around the country? If kids can't afford to come here...can we go to the kids and have two or three day mini-camps?

Per husker's quote below it appears that the same could be said of Jonah Pirsig.;)

No.

I recall some talk that the badgers were considering having a camp in River Falls to make it easier to evaluate MN prospects. Also Penn State caused a bit of an uproar awhile back when they announced they were going to have a camp in Georgia.

Good job, DL65.....

Surprising that there was no mention of Jeff Jones' status?????

Thanks again for the recap. On another note I take it that no school is currently hosting camps elsewhere is that correct? I can see where this would be a can of worms for the NCCA as to violations. Not sure what is included when people recruit but can you imagin the fancy resorts, hotels etc., being apart of all this?

Re Pirsig, I've read some reports saying he was beaten like a rented mule in the spring game. I think there are more divergent opinions of this player than any other in maroon and gold. Could some expert like Dr. Don please offer an informed opinion of this young man's potential.

I said that. And he was. That doesn't preclude him from developing into a great player. He could have been great at every other practice except that one.

He's young.

Well, if we want to get technical, the quote said he stood out, and being that he's 6'9", 320, I would suspect that he was hard to miss.

Scott Ekpe is 305. Interesting. I wonder if Harold Legania will make the 2 deeps . He is 308 and i always felt like he never played because of his weight. Maybe not.

Thanks DL for making another Sunday complete.

In two more seasons, are we going to match Wisky starting OL weight-wise? They average well over 320 lbs.

We need those strong seasoned RS'd OL/TE road graders to set up our running attack which we hope in turn will open up the much needed passing game.

I am getting excited about the direction that this team is heading.

It seems like the quality of recruits have improved each succeeding class.

I think we were pretty well matching the Wisky OL pound for pound until the coaches decided to slim our boys down a little. That brings up some exciting possibilities for our OL schemes. Wanting quicker more mobile OL may mean the running game is getting tweaked. Just a hunch, but I look for the running game to really bust wide open, especially with the addition of some really faster guys to carry the ball. Factor in 2 TE formations and big WRs. Yup, that opens the passing game.

No.

I believe there is a rule. You can't have a traveling camp, but your coaches can be part of the camp. The camp would have to be Promoted and Run by River Falls, but Andersen could be part of the camp.

I'm not surprised at all.

That why you run the football pool. Nothing gets by you. In all seriousness Doc, you would think by now that these people would realize that nothing is going to be said until it time; and it will be time when everything is finished and known!

I caught the end of the sports huddle and Dave Mona was recapping and they took the last call from Glenwood, MN with a question about the Gophers and the Twins. The caller asked about what they had heard about the Big Kid from Blue Earth, and when will they stop criticizing Mauer. Well Sid went off defending Mauer, while Mona was informing the caller that Coach Kill had commented on Pirsig having standout spring and summer. Sid interjected I don't know of any Big Kid from Duluth. Mona quickly interjected Blue Earth, Sid.

I didn't mean to sound harsh in regards to Pirsig, so I went back and rewatched him in the spring game to see if my initial impression held. On 3 of the passing downs he whiffed on his man, too slow. He'll adjust/is adjusting to the speed of the game. He's obviously got the size and reach to be a force.

I just saw it quoted in an article. My recollection is that you can go anywhere in state or within xx (75?) miles of campus.

This was refreshing. You got the sense that he'll never take less than four and will take more if they're good.

Thnx so much for answering my query. The kid obviously has great potential. Let's hope he reaches out and grabs that spot.

I thought they might grab 4 or 5 OL this year and stated so on GH. Then, following tradition in such matters, got punked for saying it on the board. Then, Jerry Kills says the same thing. Redemption. Apparently, there are not too many OL on the roster as some had thought. Once again, my friends, I have been saved by the coaches comments.

Taking on the irrational is the only rational thing to do.

A lot depends on how many scholarships you have available, but I've always thought that between your scholarships and preferred walk-ons, you should land 5 OLs per class. I think the OL is one position group where solid walk-on candidates can develop into contributors (perhaps even starters as we've seen in the recent past with guys like Christensen and Bak). I think a team should sign a QB every class as well.

Kill knows about 8.7 million times more about football than I do and I agree with him 100% on Murray. He's the one CB we've had in the Kill era who can play press coverage and still find the ball. He continues to develop and he'll be playing on Sundays.

As per Vereen, once I saw him play safety, I figured he was going to get a shot to play on Sundays as well. Solid football player who is now at his best position.

Go Gophers!!

If Epke is up to a good 305 #s that will be huge for us in stopping the run.

If him and Travis can step up and have breakout years that'd help big time in our D moving into elite territory this year.
