PA will have GopherHole's very own Nadine Babu on air on Thursday at 9:15 talking all things Gopher basketball.

KFAN has been increasing its Gopher sports talk as of late and is making the effort. Hopefully fans will fill the its airwaves to show the support for the increased Gopher talk.

Fabulous job, Nadine. You were so calm and poised! I've been saying you were destined for greatness!!

What is the out state, long distance 800- number to call? I just might have to hassle Nadine from the Creepy Guy in Moorhead, but she still loves me.

I've noticed this, as well. I think they are gearing up to make a run at acquiring the Gopher radio broadcast rights next year.

Is the Leerfield (Sp?) Sports Contract with CCO up this year?

You have always thought I could do bigger things that I ever imagined, always my biggest supporter (well, you and Bleed)...and a great mentor for me :)

Come on Dr. Don - if you want to be a good creepy stalker, you need to pony up for the long distance call...or get a cell phone ;)

Yes. But will Maturi, with his contract up in 14 months, really ruffle feathers? It's his call. Is he willing to piss off Sid, and the CCO'ers? If he is, I would assume that a few stations would want hoops & hockey... football may be viewed as too few a games to make much of a financial difference.

Nadine deserves mega-props... Mbakwe reporting... Strib blog... radio time... imagine if she dedicated most of her professional time to media-type stuff, and didn't work so many hours at her regular job. Very happy for her.

Leaving WCCO for KFAN would piss off more than just Sid. Many of us would be furious at this development with the total lack of respect that station has shown Gopher sports over a long period of time.

Logic tells me that KFAN is far from the only station they could land at... wish I had actual inside knowledge, but just have a hard time seeing Maturi making a drastic move like that.

Thanks for the info Doogie. I am sure I know a lot less about this radio contract stuff than you but I thought that Maturi (or the U) signed a contract with Leerfield and then Leerfield - not Maturi - chose to stay with 'CCO.

Maybe the U contract with Leerfield is up - so everything is up in the air. If the U goes with Leerfield again - maybe then it will be up to Leerfield to choose a radio contract partner.

Any addl info, details or clarification would be appreciated.

And I agree Nadine is doing a great job - almost like a full court PRESS for GopherHole. Great job - Kudos.

I'm torn on this. I think WCCO has served its purpose as a long-time voice of Gopher athletics. But, times have changed in the media world.

There could be great benefit going to a station that has more listeners who are actual sports fans AND who are younger than 60 years old. KFAN has a much younger, more male-oriented audience and that could help sway value toward the Gophers. The Gophers would hit their actual target audience and hopeful future fans much more efficiently on KFAN, IMHO. WCCO's ratings are abysmal in younger demographics and let's face it - this athletic department needs an infusion of interest from younger people who care about sports (which KFAN can deliver).

I think there's an angle involved that the station would talk more about the Gophers, too, and possibly give them a fairer shake if they air the games (I know they still rip the Wolves). They'd likely be excited about the opportunity. (1500-ESPN would, too, of course).

A move to KFAN or KSTP would also end the Dave and Dave show (Mona and Lee). They are property of WCCO.

At the end of the day, Maturi will likely have final say, but if the financials are overwhelmingly in the favor of someone other than WCCO, I wonder if he'd be willing to leave a lot of money on the table in an economic environment like they are in.

Do you agree with me that it would do gophersports wonders if they moved to a station with a much younger demographic like 1500 or 1130?

Learfield vs. Leerfield.

I believe Learfield manages multimedia rights for various schools, including Gopher bball play by play broadcasts... now, the level of influence / direction the schools (specifically in this case, Minnesota) give Learfield, I am not sure.. would have to imagine Learfield takes whatever direction they are given from the schools... (i.e., "figure it out with WCCO".. or "go talk to these other stations/groups and find out what options we have here")... would be interesting to know the specifics of these arrangements. I would also like to know if there's a chance they (they=whatever candy company it was) will ever make Chewy Chalk again. It was my favorite in grade school.

So.... U of Minn engages Learfield, Learfield works the details out with radio people...

The Lear in Learfield is for the founder - Clyde Lear. He's gotta be in his mid-60s+

WCCO at least has a signal not generated by a gerbil on a wheel. I live about 40 miles from the campus as the crow flies. At sundown now Barreiro is competing with another rural station which isn't all bad. And don't get me started on Twins broadcasts. Same thing and, no, there isn't a network station that comes in clearly. The University is a statewide entity and I'd hope they stay with WCCO. Their image might still be Boone and Erickson but from noon on their on-air people are geared to the younger audience. Some really suck, but then so do quite a few of people at KFAN and KSTP.

Signal strength is an issue. I do think KFAN could do what they do with the Vikings and put the Gophers on 100.3 FM at the same time they are on 1130. That would get to at least 75 miles outside of downtown MSP with a crystal clear FM signal. I listen to the Vikings this way almost down to Rochester when I'm on the road occasionally on Sunday afternoons. Then other stations could pick up the slack outside of that circle. Daytime 1130 signal is really good.

The problem is they don't have any younger listeners, whether the programming is geared that way or not. KFAN really has a solid, male-oriented, younger audience....much, much more solid in that demo than WCCO.

Again, I'm torn. WCCO has been good for the Golden Gophers over the years. But, there are some other factors worth considering in today's media environment.

If we're turning this into a radio thread most radio SUCKS these days. Remember when 'CCO had Cannon and Boone/Erickson and KSTP had Vogel?
