Yes and no. There have certainly been more impressive seasons. Back in the day they didn't play as many games. For instance the gophers have an undefeated season back a hundred years ago when they went 13-0.

The 1982 big ten winners that went to the sweet sixteen were 23-6.

The 1990 elite eight team was 23-9.

The best team we have ever had (IMO) was 1977 when they finished 24-3 but were banned from post season play.

The final four team went 31-4 but in ten seconds DPO guy will come on and say that never happened.

Yep. Don't condone that we cheated, but this "most wins in a season" stuff is nonsense. Completely different times, play a lot more games now. 31 is the record, and as you pointed out the 1977, 1982, 1990 seasons, etc., were much more impressive/impactful. None of those wins came in a consolation tournament.

Sun Times chimes in:

MINNESOTA (25-13, 8-10): First-year coach Richard Pitino directed the spotty Gophers to their third NIT title behind tourney MVP Austin Hollins. Future looks bright if Andre Hollins (13.6 ppg), top rebounder 6-11 Elliott Eliason and assist leader DeAndre Matthieu (12 ppg) continue to develop.

GRADE: B

Go Gophers!!

I'll give the Sun Times a thumbs up for saying the Gophers have won 3 NIT titles, with nary a mention of the 1998 title being vacated. Those disclaimers get really old and get sillier & sillier as time goes on.

Have never condoned the cheating that has gone on (and continues to go on) in college basketball, but I refuse to "vacate" anything the Gopher program accomplished (re: '97 Final Four, etc.), nor am I going to ignore anything the Fab 5 (Michigan) or Slick Cal accomplished at UMass and Memphis, etc., or any other vacated games/seasons. The games happened. I saw them with my own eyes. There were TV cameras, there were box scores, therefore there was a winner and a loser.

I totally agree with this sentiment. They need to find a different way to punish schools. Vacating records is stupid. And not just because my team has a big blank spot in their media guide. History is history. Mark it with an asterisk maybe, but don't pretend it never happened. It did.

Any suggestions?

I dunno. Terminate everyone involved? Ban everyone involved for 5 years? 10 years? Life? Reduce scholarships significantly? Terminate the program for a year? Post-season bans? Burn down the athletic buildings? Yes, I realize some of these are being done already. The record is the record. It happened.

Any kid who wasn't involved should be free to transfer without sitting out.

Most of all, be consistent. Don't let NC off, while hammering Minnesota. Don't reduce the punishment to Penn St. because they beg.

Just spitballing....................

I think most of the people comparing Tubby to Pitino are missing the point.

This year's team actually had a cohesive offense. Players moved the ball around with a purpose. The full court press rounded out the Gopher's new identity.

Tubby's teams didn't have any of that. He had athletes mindlessly pass the ball around until the shot clock was approaching zero and then a player would either chuck up a contested three or try to split 4 defenders to get to the rim.

The Gophers under Pitino are light years ahead of Tubby's teams-- even last years.

Players are now being coached, and the future looks bright.

Everyone else that says otherwise is either trolling or has never watched a single game these past few seasons.

Actually... Trevor was only 3rd team all big ten, Rodney did not even make all big ten honorable mention, nobody got drafted....overall very moderate graduation losses.

Hey Brain Trust, Trevor was actually 2nd Team All-Big Ten. Sorry if that sounded mean-spirited, but its your user name that did that to you. Just setting the record straight here. Frankly, Trev got snubbed from the All-Big Ten Def team too, given the value of his rebounding and blocks. Embarrassing and abusing 1st round NBA draft pick Cody Zeller all evening at the Barn was a pretty good indicator of exactly how valuable he was.

Others also did a nice job of pointing out the loss of Joe Coleman, so I don't need to go there.

Really though, trying to grade Tubby's last season vs. Lil' P's 1st season is just ridiculous. The program had completely different expectations given the tenure of the coaches in question.

Sure! I prefer the coaches poll to the media/Sid Hartman polls

I think firing the appropriate people, expelling players when necessary taking away scholarships for x amount years are all punishment enough, just use the right combination of these based on the offense. No body brings up the fact that the fab five had to vacate when an article is written about them or Michigan, but Myron and co have no problem bringing up our scandal

Normally I wouldn't give an A without an NCAA appearance (and probably a win). But in this case I do ... recognizing that the NCAA took away our would-be starting PF before the season began, then our best player got hurt and was never the same, then our starting PF suffered a "career ending" injury... and then after the disappointment of barely missing the NCAA, he pulls the guys together and wins the NIT. 25 wins is an impressive first season no matter how you slice it.

Grading criteria will go up from here, though.
