GopherHole Poll: What grade would you give Pitino's first year with the program?

Far above and beyond what experts predicted preseason. A for sure.

B+

I thought we had an outside shot at the NCAA entering the season. That would have deserved an A.

I would have went with B+ if it was an option. When considering everything good (surprisingly quick adaptation to coaching in the B1G, getting the most out of his players, getting the team to play hard in the NIT, getting in the conversation on some top recruits) it certainly outweighs the negatives (0-3 on the Big 3, a couple ugly home losses).

Went with "B" but it would be a B+. "A" would have been a NCAA tournament win.

All teams do but no way I would have bet we would be in the NCAA. (Hope? Absolutely. Expect? No way) Let alone win 25 games. With what? He can coach!
Maybe Andre did not, but everyone else got better. Some way better! Their attitude and resiliency is amazing. That's all coaching.

Elliot and Malik? :)

Very encouraged after this year. Gotta make a splash in recruiting next year and take off.

Oh I agree completely, I think he did a great job and I'm excited for continued player/team development!

I have said that any bid to the NCAAs is better than an NIT title, I stand by that assessment.

That being said for Coach Pitino to come in and set a record for the most wins (officially) in the history of the program is quite a feat. This team was predicted by most to finish 9-10th in the B1G; I'll take 25 wins and an NIT title.

Top 5 in the B1G and an NCAA trip shouldn't be out of the question for next season.

B++ - I think the coaching job was an A but no NCAAs makes it the high B. Pitino is going to be a great coach here. Very good future for the program right now. Getting the right guys in the spring is tough but if he gets a yes from one or two guys that really fit- look out next year.

THIS. +1. I COULDN'T AGREE MORE WITH ALL OF THIS. WELL SAID!

Based on preseason vibe and the generally low expectations surrounding the year, I give this season an A/A+.

Good solid C

This team was predicted to go to the NIT and did. Let's not lose sight of reality because of a few feel good wins over some other flunkies. Tubby was run out of town for similar season results.

LOL - who predicted we'd go to the NIT? Who makes preseason NIT predictions?

Ummm...pretty much every preseason magazine.

Holy hell are you a troll. Just went through your most recent posts. Defending Bo Ryan, picking High Point to beat us in the NIT opening round, among numerous other anti-Gopher posts. GTFO.

ETA...

Highpoint 59, Gophers 57

This putrid season gets a fitting end. This will be a similar game to Robert Morris beating Kentucky last year.

Why on earth would you want to see the NIT? Real postseason basketball is played from Wednesday-Sunday this week. Truth is, if people cared about the NIT, ESPN would broadcast it.

I think the whole damn team underchieved. The only bright spot was Mathieu and he is a turnover machine. I never bought in to the preseason speculation that this team was a bottom feeder. They really only lost Mbakwe and Williams and they were both extremely flawed. I actually think this team was deeper than last year's and more talented, Pitino is very green and was outcoached more times than not. He may turn in to a great coach, but if his name wasn't Pitino we would seriously be considering if he was the right hire. Next year's team is going to be even worse and an NIT birth in '15 would be a success.

Because I want more than mediocrity it makes me anti-Gopher? If you are pleased with a season ending in the NIT, you are more anti-Gopher than anyone.

Sounds like you are hoping for the NIT in 2015 based on your post above. You should really GTFO, you only came here to troll people celebrating the win.

Not true. I came here to grade Pitino's first season and I gave my vote and was called a troll by you. Apparently, if I wasn't going to give Pitino an A or B, I am not welcome here. Btw- I am not hoping for the NIT next year, I just don't share the blind Pitino optimism so many do. Hope I am proven wrong, sooner than later, but I am obviously missing something.

Well you predicted High Point would beat us, so I'm not surprised that you are confused.

A all the way. I'm sticking to what I said pre-season: that I would be overjoyed with anything more than 6 conference wins and a 9th place finish considering who we lost and who was coming back. That they were in serious contention for an NCAA bid - I'll tell you, I didn't even think it was worth thinking about much less hoping for before the season began. And then to regroup and win the dang NIT; it's the consolation tournament, but there are some decent teams in there...32 to be exact, including a few that probably should have made the Field. And the Gophers came out on top of them all. That's no small feat. I'll take a 25-win season. It's sure a different feeling than last year right after the season ended.

I agree. Knight would give him an F. WOW. He predicts SMU will win, then he whines the whole game about MN strategy
