Wow, thought that Oregon was gonna take that second set. Way to fight through it.
 

Good win. Tough match. Gophers looked great the first two sets--most aspects of their game were really working. Taylor Landfair had an outstanding match. Poor third set. It looked like the Gophers got tired. Jenna Wenaas appeared to lose her legs because she wasn't getting in the air as high as the first two set. Passing and setting dropped. Landfair stepped it up and pulled them over the finish line. McGhie had a chance to serve out the fourth set. It appeared that she looked to the side just as she as was about to make contact with the ball. The match with Stanford will be tough because they will be ready to redeem themselves. They should be just as tired as the Gophers. Hopefully, the Gophers will become tougher and more confident from the difficult match tonight. Go Gophers.

With those kinds of serves it's all about timing. If she hits it just right the ball will almost immediately start to drop after crossing the net.

Hugh is a god!

Last night was another great example of Hugh’s ability to make adjustments and the Gopher’s capacity to jump in off the bench and do their assignment. Putting in Booth and Crowl changed the look of the block. It resulted in a less effective offense, better transitions for the Gophs, and ultimately gaps that Landfair took advantage of for her monstrous night!!

I love the depth of this year’s squad and can’t wait until Wucherer loses the boot. She will not only add to the depth, but I am predicting she will add another dimension to the right side at times. What do you all think?
 


At the end of the fourth game, at 25-all I believe, the O server ripped off a monstrous hard serve, but the point went to MN. Stats said only Service Error by O. What was the call? Was it a foot fault?

Now, Hugh's next task is to recover Jenna Wenaas's big spinner serve. As you wrote, it's nice to have depth-Elise McGhie did fine coming in as a serving sub for Jenna.

I think, in the final set, Oregon got causght out having fewer remaining subs than they thought they had. There was a lot of discussion between the coach, the down ref and the Duck's stat keepers.

Errors on her top spin serves really took her out of her game. After she went back to the more traditional jump float serve, MS starting setting her more.

In that fourth set, I think MS should've called her own number at times to throw off Oregon's defense. I think it was late in that set when Mel should've went on two, but set someone else and oregon dug it up and got a kill.
 

Stanford was the team that played five sets yesterday, but the Gophers look like the worst of the two teams out there. Hate to say it, but we might see loss number two tonight.
 

Gophers were not ready to play tonight and it showed. Hugh needs to right the ship as he's got a short week to get ready for two very strong opponents.
 



We didn't get "Peak Landfair" tonight and no other attacker stepped up. Stats were absent from the video boards almost as if they anticipated there would be nothing of interest to record.

The best sight of the night was seeing McKenna Wucherer, while unavailable, standing on the sidelines without a boot on her ankle.
 

Disappointing play tonight. Lethargic. Gophers have played 6 sets in a row that were mediocre to terrible. They need some time off to recover, reflect, and refocus. Hopefully, Hugh will come up with some changes. Go Gophers.

They were playing from behind all night long. That third set win gave us some hope, but that was short lived.

It's a tough loss, but a necessary one. If you want see embarrassing volleyball play just look up USA volleyball in the PANAM final six tourney gold medal match. At times they just looked lost out there, zero communication and making high school level errors.

I don't see anything necessary about any loss, and especially against a team with less talent on the roster. (Just my opinion.)
 

The Gophers were on the defense all night. Their service reception rarely let them take the offense. They'll bounce back, but they'll have to improve on three things: Passing, passing, and passing.
 

Agreed, the backcourt needs to play much better, which is the frustrating part because CC and Killely have the most experience. Passing needs to be much better to help Mel to be able to set to all options available and not OOS.
 

Very frustrating to see such a fun match with fight on Friday night and then to see such an awful, low energy performance last night.
 

I'm sure there were numerous VB-specific failings v. Stanford. However, even the least of VB knowers (among whom I'm one) could surely see that MN as a team had no apparent interest in playing the match from the beginning and didn't hide it. If Landfair is injured, are there no other players on a highly skilled #3-ranked roster, who can step up and carry the load?

Lighten up, they have played 6 games and 5 of those teams have been ranked. They are 4-2 with two more tough matches coming up this week. Then the fun begins and we get into conference play. Still have some injuries and hopefully they will be at full strength soon.

It really all depends on how easily disappointed you are. The correct approach is not to be disappointed yet because the season is early and the Gophers already have multiple nice wins against good teams. We will be a top-third-of-the-Big Ten team yet again (for something like the 15th plus consecutive season)… that is pretty great if you ask me.

I would agree with the Class of 98 Gopher. The University Minnesota has one of the toughest nonconference schedules in the country which provides a great opportunity to test where the team is at and what areas they need to grow in. The non-conference results tell me that we are a solid top 10 team that needs to develop a more aggressive, but consistent serving game and tighten up the first touches on the ball. Yes Stafford dominated us, but I believe it was because we were forced to be a one dimensional team on offense due to poor passing. When that happens setting options are limited and the opposing team can set up a consistent block that can make a team look lack luster.

Hugh and his team of coaches are teachers of the game and I have no doubt they will get the players were they need to be by the end of the season.

Unfortunately, that first touch of the ball has been INCONSISTENT for years and SSS is the only setter we have had that could CONSISTENLY better the second touch, when our passing game broke down. Better serving teams will always serve us tough for these reasons.

We have a very young team and many new players. The mixture of these players still needs to develop cohesion on the court.....especially, when we our OOS. In past seasons we have played a lot of OOS volleyball and it will continue this season.

Again, Hugh has his work cut out for him. Hopefully, we will be clicking a lot better come post season. There is a lot of volleyball left to play and lot of time for these players to improve. They all know what they need to work on.
 

Despite 23 service errors (I think), Stanford traveled to Lincoln and took down Nebraska in four sets:
27-25, 25-23, 19-25, 27-25
