Gopher Supporter Dubay Gets Another Shot

He's essentially auditioning this week with Judd Zulgad and seems to be a good alternative to the constant Viking pablum on the FAN.

When discussing Gopher football he said this season was a "failure" given their B10 record remainded 2-6 which surprised me given he's always been a staunch defender of an admittedly shaky product. He also was down on Nelson's season ending performances. At least there may be a knowlegeable Gopher supporter on the radio from 9-12 going forward.

If that's his take, then he's no different than any other personality out there.
I swear football fans in this market are so offense driven it's sick.

The gophers' D this year is the greatest beacon of hope for the future since I don't know when. They were able to WIN several games on the back of the defense with a freshman QB and a banged up OL without any go to weapons on the other side of the ball.
This coming from a defense that just last year was so god awful it couldn't stop NMSU or NDSU.

If Dubay ignores the defensive improvement and discounts the overall record improvement simply because the O struggled late, then he's no better than reusse or souhan who can't even name more than 3 gopher players.

I don't understand why people bitch about KFAN talking constantly about the Vikings. They're the flagship station, for Allah's sake. They talk about what MOST of their listeners want to hear about, not what YOU want them to talk about. They wouldn't have stayed in business for decades if they weren't responsive to what the average listener wants. Talking about Gopher football (or Gopher sports in general) is not a profitable enterprise. If it were, people would do it more often. Viking football is more popular than Gopher football on the order of several magnitudes, and always will be. The sooner you come to terms with this, the better off your life will be, and the sooner you can quit bitching about it.

Completely agree.

I don't agree at all that it's way more popular, but as the Flagship for Gopher football, I would expect a little more. A build it and they will come mentality. If they mix in talk about it, their listeners will start to pay more attention.
How much time can they discuss Christian Ponder getting married? Just looking for more balance and I think a lot of other people are too (at least people I talk to).

Speaking of Larry Fitz Sr., anyone here know why Jr. didn't play for Mason? I don't remember the decision, and I always thought it was weird as he chose Pitt.

You serious? Look at the TV ratings. Look at the merchandise sales. Look at the TV contracts. You have to either be trolling or seriously misinformed.

but as the Flagship for Gopher football, I would expect a little more.

Again, as I said, if it were beneficial and/or profitable for them to talk about Gopher football more, they would talk about it more. Period. This isn't very controversial at all. They're going to do what is in the best interests of their business and what will draw the advertising dollars. Outside of Washburn-McCreavy, who's lining up to advertise during Gopher sports talk?

A build it and they will come mentality. If they mix in talk about it, their listeners will start to pay more attention.

And you know this how? They've had plenty of Gopher talk. They even set aside time for their own version of "Gopher Football Weekly" or whatever they called it. That went the way of the dinosaur pretty quickly. I wonder why?

Just looking for more balance and I think a lot of other people are too (at least people I talk to).

You, a Gopher fan, socialize and interact with other Gopher fans? I'm shocked. The problem is that you are in the vast minority (Gopher football fans who also converse with other Gopher football fans) among KFAN listeners. This is a fact.

It had nothing to do with Mason - it was racist Sr. punishing the U for firing Mac Boston. I don't know whether it's factual, but I heard/read once that Jr. wanted to play for the U, but Sr. absolutely forbade it on the above grounds. The fact that Jr. has had so much involvement with the U (camps, etc.) over the past few years would support this story. It also wasn't weird that he chose Pitt, given that he played his final year of prep ball in PA at Valley Forge Military Academy.

Oops. My first sentence was a mistype. Meant to say that "I agree that it is way more popular (Vikings more popular)".

Outside of the Gopher specific programming they have done, they just don't talk about the Gophers very much. Don't you think the Vikings coverage is overboard? Bores me to tears and I will watch the Vikings about half of the time they are on.

Yes, I do think if more time is spent covering a team, that more interest will follow. If average rube fan knows a little more about the team than we cancelled the UNC series... it will bring about more interest and ultimate serve their business well.

Thank you for clarifying about Fitz Jr.

Are the Vikings popular because they talk about them, or do they talk about them because they're popular? If you answer this question honestly, you will see why your thought process on this is completely backwards. If they start talking about the Minnesota Swarm constantly on KFAN, I don't foresee them selling out their games at any point in the future.

I'm not talking about something as obscure as the Lynx or Swarm. Gophers Football is anywhere from the 4th to the 6th most popular show in town (after Vikings, Twins, Wolves, and sometimes in front of Wild, Gopher Bball, and Gopher Hockey).

I would like to see more coverage and more of that coverage be positive. With more positive coverage comes more talk, ticket sales, better recruiting...

I agree I think most times you hear a gopher football story on KFAN its not very positive. I think the average sports fans in Minnesota is beat Michigan, Ohio State, or Wisconsin or get to a revelant bowl (in thier eyes) and get back to me.

Ive also always wondered if the Vikings left town or never came to town how would the gopher program be different? Imposible to say but an interesting thought.

Good luck Dubay! Pulling for you! I will tune in to listen, miss having you on the radio!

You can only say, "They tried real hard" so many times on a radio show. If the team wants more positive coverage they need to produce more positive results.

Cool....PA is horrible...not as bad as Reusse but close. Nice to have someone to listen to in the morning. Dubay hates Bucky and the Packers. A true MN fan.

Good to see a sad story turning around. Can't believe dude's brother stole his wife from him. That and monetary mismanagement and you can see where the guy fell apart. I think I read where he was missing payments on his home and sounded like he was living check to check before drugs started carving out a portion of his $. Guy said he made $150k at his height, but yet he had two homes. $150k, with kids, and a wife who isn't killing it doesn't equal a McMansion and a lake home.
