Gopher Supporter Dubay Gets Another Shot

Dubay did a great job - I hope they keep him around with Judd after this week. It's nice to have a guy on the radio that is a MN guy and openly hates the Packers and Badgers. It's also nice to have something to listen to from 9-12....because PA on KFAN is crap.

Very glad about this. In college, I listened to PA and Dubay every day. And when Dubay was let go, it became unlistenable. Dubay is one of the best radio personalities in the market. Hope he gets a contract out of this. That being said, is it still nearly impossible to podcast 1500 shows?

Yeah, I listen to the podcasts a few times a week.

Dubay ripping into Gopher football now. Saying Nelson was "awful" , and how the team has not improved after going 2-6 in the big ten last year and 3-5 in the conference this year (Zulgad didn't correct him).

Zulgad did correct Dubay a bit later in the segment (that the Gophers have been 2-6 in conference play in the last two years, no improvement there)

My take on the Dubay rip was he was criticizing those who say that the Gophers are looking better and seemed to be on the right track. He has seen nothing to support this per se and wonders why others do not admit this (ignore the non-conference fluff schedule, only thing that matters is the conference games) Dubay does not think Kill was the wrong choice yet (thinks he has a 60% chance of succeeding eventually), but is going to have to see a lot more before that can be realized.

Dubay is a big believer that firing Mason was the wrong thing to do and that Brewster has set this program back so many years that Kill may be lucky just to get it back to "Mason-levels" of competency.

I guess nonconference games count when you lose them, but not when you win them. :D

He lost me when he went on a rant about the 2003 Michigan game and stated that everyone needed to "get over" how they lost that game and appreciate that Mason had the Gophers at #13 in the nation with a chance to go to the Rose Bowl. As far as the Big Ten record being all that matters, Glen went 1-7 and 2-6 in his first two years, so that kind of gets thrown out the window too.

Honestly, he sounded like a lot of Mason's supporters around here. He ignored all of Mason's shortcomings and blamed all the problems of the last 6 years on people who weren't happy with Glen. Calling students' drunks, not showing-up for his radio shows, not making much of an effort recruiting Defense, disappearing from January to August, etc. He blamed Maturi for the firing ignoring Bruinink's role. None of that mentioned.

He did mention the Brewster hiring and Tim's failure as a Head Coach. That feeling is universal now. No controversy there.

Zulgad, I guy who's lack of knowledge about College Football is breathtaking mentioned two other things, not surprisingly media related. Mason's only problem according to Judd, was he wasn't good to the Media!:clap: The other, Gopher fans are delusional and are mean to Judd in e-mails and calls.

Boo-hoo little guy, boo-hoo.

It was only in his complaints about Nelson and Kill where Dubay diverged from the old Masonites. HE hammered the Offense's digression from last year. Hard to argue with that. He did mention the injuries and youth on the Offensive Line (there you go Ogee1!). He didn't mention how much better the Defense looked. He thought Nelson looked awful, except for the 1st half against Purdue and how sad it was that Gray had been hurt.

Oh and Judd complained about ruining the Nelson's redshirt while also saying how bad Nelson has looked. Brilliant!

A lot irritated me. A lot was true, and I still can't stand Zulgad.

I'll keep listening.

So were you just irritated that that he truth was spoken? I think Dubay was on track with his assessment...although not sure I agree with him on Mason being so great.

Here try reading it again. Didn't think it was that tough. I'll add another period this time.

Maybe it's because you started a sentence with "and". You must be an Iowa graduate Icehole.

Maybe it's because you started a sentence with "and". You must be an Iowa graduate Icehole.

Starting a sentence with the conjunction "and" does violate what many of us are taught. Grammarians, however--even prescriptivist ones such as Roy H. Copperud, Wilson Follett, Bryan A. Garner, and Ernest Gowers--give it unqualified approval.

Then where does the prohibition come from? "Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage" posits that children are told to refrain from connecting independent clauses or simple sentences with "and" because, lacking a more sophisticated technique, they overuse it. ("I went home and asked my mother to make a cake. And she said she was too busy. And I got mad and...")

As they acquire more skill, older students make use of other conjunctions ("After I went home, I asked my mother to make a cake; however, she said she was too busy, so I got mad, but..."). Still, they continue to think it is wrong to start a sentence with "and" even though it is fine to do so.

The first day, the show was a bit shaky. Dubay seemed really nervous and rusty. Today's show was much better.
Already after two days, the Judd and Dubay show is better than anything on KFAN except Barriero. I hope they keep him.

As for PA's Vikings PBP - it's worse than his radio show. His consistent calling of players by their first names is about as unprofessional as it gets, and his stupid cliches like "fade to fire" and "fresh four" are just desperate wannabe hipster speak. He's worse than Dave Lee was, and that's really saying something.

Dubay did a nice job of breaking it down. Nelson was awful, but Dubay also mentioned that you can't win with 19-20 year old guys on the o-line. However, there was no mention of Barker being out after the first half of the Purdue game.

His take on the Michigan was spot on as well. Rather than focus on the fact that the Gophers and Michigan were #13 and #16 and playing a prime time nationally televised game, people focused on it as a loss. Mason had the team competing against anyone in the country. I like coach Kill, but Mason should have been able to take this program into the new stadium and benefit from it.

He later acknowledged that Kill has to be given time because he has a blue print that take a number of years and the U baought into the plan Kill laid out.

He felt that pulling Nelson's redshirt was a panic to get to a bowl game, but he acknowledged that injuries played a big role in the pulling of many red-shirts.

I thought he was very fair in his comments. Level, did not call for any heads, but felt that fans are too easy on the program.

I have my car in the shop and I've been listening to local news casters again this week. I'm not sure where to put "unfortunately" in that sentence because I feel like I wanted to use it 3+ times.

It is good that he pays attention and he was correct on: Offensive Line being way young and tough to win in the Big Ten with this limitation.
I don't get why he is so negative on Nelson at QB. I think he has played decent given the circumstances.

You can't look at Nelson's play without putting it into context. He played behind a beaten up OL and without much help in terms of playmakers. I thought Nelson played decent last year, considering the circumstances. He really struggled against Nebraska and Michigan State, but other than that, he played decent.

Dubay was decent, some of his analysis was a bit of the same ole recycled nonsense that we hear all of the time. If losing to South Dakota/NDSU/New Mexico State were collosal failures, that fact that those appear to be in the rearview mirror is an improvement. It's nothing to really hang your hat on, but to state otherwise is to ignore how down this program really was.

Wow Larry Fitzgerald Senior chimes in with this tweet: "Crack air!KSTP-AM1500 sports station is allowing 2-Time con- cocaine-methenthetimine felon ex-KFAN Jeff Dubay to audition.Sad Dan Siemon!"

Go Gophers!!

Larry Fitzgerald is a first class asshole. I know this first hand. He is so bitter that he can't get a real job because he is an idiot and has an ego the size of Alaska. He of all people should not be complaining about people getting a chance to redeem themselves, what a loser.

Can't endorse anyone for a sports job in the Twin Cities that has such a comically bad (and factually incorrect) opinion on the tenure of Glen Mason. I would guess that, by allowing Dubay to audition, 1500 has already decided to hire him unless they receive some sort of backlash during his trial run. Would love to listen to a Twin Cities sports talk show at work, but haven't found a good fit. I do enjoy hearing Flip's takes on Dan's show, but I can't stand Dan B and his parrot of a co-host.

Go Gophers!!

The angry racist Dennis Green bobo sounds jealous. Nearly twenty years after being fired by KFAN and he's never found work at one of the major radio stations.

The whole Dubay's brother thing wasn't exactly a secret. It's been out there for a while. I think his wife was a former Vikings cheerleader and known golddigger if I recall. I could see where that would cause someone to go off the deep end - it happened to one of my best friends as well only he ended up addicted to pills. I barely speak to him anymore.

My impression at the time was that Dubay was hanging with a pretty fast crowd as well. People with a lot of money and a lot of time on their hands who tend to have access to things that most of us wouldn't normally see. While smoking crack is pretty extreme, I don't doubt for a minute that the crowd he was running with probably partook of the nose candy on a regular basis. I really hope Jeff is clean, because his voice and his takes are really missed on the radio.

As for Larry Fitz Senior, that guy is a total jackass. He was terrible in the early days of KFAN with Eric Nelson, and as someone mentioned above, there's a reason his only work since has been on KMOJ and with the Spokesman-Recorder. Nobody in the media wants to deal with him. If not for his famous and talented son, he'd have been long since forgotten with the likes of Thor Tolo and the Sports Babe.

Jeff Dubay on 1500 am

He's essentially auditioning this week with Judd Zulgad and seems to be a good alternative to the constant Viking pablum on the FAN.

When discussing Gopher football he said this season was a "failure" given their B10 record remainded 2-6 which surprised me given he's always been a staunch defender of an admittedly shaky product. He also was down on Nelson's season ending performances. At least there may be a knowlegeable Gopher supporter on the radio from 9-12 going forward.

I usually catch Almanac on TP2 on Friday nights. From time to time Fitzgerald Sr will be on. I just roll my eyes every time. What a d-bag.
