Gopher portal visits and signings

Just brought in an RB, rooms sits at 8 with incoming freshman and guys coming back. I don't see us taking another RB after the Purdue kid who just committed.
Yeah, I have no idea if he is B1G quality just that he’s been mentioned numerous times.

Don't forget Ethan Robinson from Bucknell who was very solid in his one year here. There was also Kyler Baugh from Houston Christian who took a little time getting up to speed but was a good contributor once he did.

I think Baugh is on the Steelers practice squad. Can’t recall.

D line (DT in particular), corner, then o line (although less of a priority than DT). Maybe a LB (I think Karmo, Barron and Kingsbury are ok though) and an impact WR (maybe one of the younger bigger guys that are coming out of HS) would make it a complete offseason.
I hope we see the gophers identify position that have to be good each year and be willing to spend on those positions and alternatively, I think there are positions that can/should be filled through HS recruiting.

OL, DL, CB need to be good every year therefore targeted in the portal. I think LB, S, RB, TE and potentially WR can be filled through HS recruiting. QB is going to be evaluated on a year by year basis.

I think offensive skill should be at the bottom of the totem pole for a team like MN. Build a good to great defense and a strong OL then assemble what you can for skill from there.

I could see taking someone with some experience. We should be an attractive destination with a Senior number one and no clear number two.

There are 4700 guys in the portal...that's 47 guys for 100 teams. Figure the numbers however...certainly guys available. Many likely won't have teams.
Can anyone calculate a quick percentage of the number of players in the portal compared to the total number of scholarship players currently on rosters?

Thanks for the correction. I knew it was tOSU and thought Pryor, but maybe I'm thinking of the free tattoos. Can you remember all the angst over free tattoos and a decade or so later, players are getting money enough to buy a dozen tattoo parlors.

Well, if we agree only 100 teams play big time football that's 100 teams X say 110 players? That's 11,000 scholarships. 4700 guys is closing in on half and that was the day one entry number. Lots of money grab lottery like hopefuls.

Too many for even any kind of majority to all to find a top 100 team. Eliminate a Top 50 that you know you don't want to try and win the bidding war for and use up all your budget. Then, Maybe say there is a Top 250 guys to scramble after of the 4700 and then it gets real muddy. 2nd tier of 250 more to get to 550 ish and then it's some form of who is this guy? Each team wants guys to fit their culture after how tall, how fast, how big is this guy? Do we know anybody who knows this guy?

Absolutely speed dating with a good amount of prep done during the season by some recruiting guys on staff who chart this stuff in preparation for the portal window. But still...ultimate musical chairs. Kind of exciting.

I’d guess a high end estimate for how may transfers a team brings on average is about 30. So then you’re at 3,000 guys that will get signed out of that 4700 day one entries. Plus you still have the guys that entered earlier and weren’t signed and whatever guys that continue to filter in.

I just feel like Nestor was a unicorn. That guys who transfer laterally from Big Ten teams, are doing so because they aren't playing.

Would rather focus on guys trying to move up a level or two and prove themselves.

Hope I'm wrong on that.

St. Juste? Filiaga? Williamson? Carroll? Howard?

All of these played significantly or started at the Big Ten team.

Nestor did not (special team player). Obviously was referring to guys who weren't already significant contributors.

Sure, if a Big Ten contributor thinks he's not going to get to play at that school next year, for some reason and/or is looking for a change of scenery, great

Agree about DT -- although I haven't really looked at who we've got on the team right now, I just am reacting to the departures.

I think the LB squad is solid/impressive, as is.

Right side of offensive line, unless we think Carroll or Williams (or both) is/are ready to be inserted? (Just observing that we've got a pair of 4-star highly sought after young dudes waiting their turn). Solving this problem unleashes the rushing attack and the passing attack.

An impact WR -- totally agree.

What about corners? I think we're counting on Hopkins living up to Walley's example and starting on Day One. Even so, are you comfortable with the cornerback situation?

While I think it’s possible to pick up solid players that had limited roles at P2/P4, I agree that it’s likely to have a higher hit rate by picking up top performers players from lower levels. Going the G5/FCS route will probably be cheaper too.

In terms of actually impact/starter level players, I think they need 2 DTs, an OT, a CB, WR, and a nickel. I would put them in a hat order.

on the want list would be a Biber-type at TE and another CB with experience. I’d be fine bringing in an LB but also think there’s enough talent in that room right now (Karmo, Carrier, Kingsbury) alongside Barnowski to just ride it out.

There was a study a few years ago that showed only about half end up with scholarships at the new school at the same level, around a quarter drop down (G5, FCS, etc) and the rest don't show that they ended up at another program. I wonder if those numbers have changed.

I don’t think we’ve taken a lot of these types unless they were young.
