Gopher Hockey Recruiting

There are tons of great goalies over that time. The best are the ones that make the NHL.
Dobes
Augustine
Levi
Slukynsky
Fowler
Knight
Yegorov will be great
Sergeev
and Matt Davis will not play in the NHL but is legendary come tournament time
I notice you didn't include La Fontaine in your list even though he won the Richter Award for being the best goalie when he was at the U.

Good goalie. Not a great goalie. But a list of good goalies will be 100 long.

La Fontaines stats when he won the Richter was: 934 SV% and 1.79 GA. Those numbers are better than a lot of the goalies in your list but you only consider him a "good" goalie?

Bonin will say playing behind that d core the stats don’t tell the story.

I agree to extent. Laffer was a great goalie for one year. He was pretty meh the rest of his college career. Personally I think any goalie who goes on to play consistently at any pro level is a great goalie. Given how few goalies make it, it is quite the accomplishment.

I agree, goalies that have good stats usually have a good d core in front of them but they still have to make the saves. My statement was about what makes a great goalie in college not nessarrily in the pros because we have no idea how a college goalie will be in the pros. I just think it was interesting Bonin didn't include La Fontaine in his list especially when he won the Richter.

Yes we do. When you see Dobes you know. We also knew Lafontaine and Close would be ECHLers.

I agree with this statement, but added my opinion.

"I think any goalie who goes on to play consistently (meaning about three or more seasons with 25+ starts) at the AHL level and above is a great goalie."

Adam Wilcox is the last great goalie to come through the U.

IMO, when the goalie is playing for the Gophers i don't even think about how he will do in the pros. Some of the goalies in your list that you said are great haven't played one game in the pros so not sure how you consider them great based on your 25+starts in the AHL?

Because I have watched them play and it's obvious they will...

Great goalies are often very easy to see. As Gopher fans, usually you have to see it in the other net but it still stands.

Just when we're having a nice conversation you have to take your typical cheap shot at the Gopher program. You are such a fraud when it comes being a fan of the Gopher Hockey team.

Reality hurts? The Gophers have had absolute megastars lately, most of them on one roster at the same time + Rinzel.

Just not between the pipes.

5 years ago was Hunter Shepard. As good as Davis at tournament time and nice pro career. Mostly in AHL with a few starts and wins in The League.

Yup, he hit my threshold of great goalie which is actually surprising. I think Matt Davis may do the same and carve out a solid AHL career.

Maceo Phillips is playing less than 5 minutes a game against his peers from places like Germany, and we're to think he's ready for Big Ten and NCHC non-con opponents? He needs to be 7th D at best.

The Cullens are moving to Michigan so anyone that had false hope of them not all going to MSU can put that to rest.

Motzko can't even get a visit out of this kid1746022623721.png

Interview.
"Mason mentions that he plans to visit Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Michigan State, & Boston College for hockey"
Ah I see. That one’s disappointing. Don’t know why in the hell you’d put Wisconsin on the list given the style they play, but to each they’re own. Wonder if he’s said he wants to come in year after next and Bob we’ve decided we don’t have room at forward (wrong decision as to me he’s the type of guy you make room for as he should be a productive 3 year player) with only lamb and mitts graduating next year.

LMAO, if Gavin Katz comes in over this kid you need to be fired yesterday.

Genuine question, have you ever watched Katz play or do you just not like him because he’s 5’9”? I wouldn’t be surprised if he outscored west next year in the USHL.

Maybe he will. Like Taylor Cammarata.

But I care about how many points they put up in the NCAA. Also, if you like Katz, you get rid of somebody else to make room for West.

Motzko's retirement parade might be rough... Talk about a difference in the non-con schedule.

Two games against BC
One game against DU in Colorado
Two games at the Ralph
Two games against what will be a much better and experienced (but top heavy) UMD team
+ all the Big Ten teams that will stack up with CHL talent.

Should have got him out this year and started the painful part of a new regime. But I'll just wait as the rest of the people come around too late as usual.

Or, and hear me out here, this is how you make a battle tested team for the postseason. Last year it was nothing but complaining about the non conference and this year it’s too hard? I’d rather we play this schedule every single year as it makes your sos (and thus rpi) extremely good. Part of why bc and msu had the stranglehold they did up top was because they played each other. Certainly can’t out talent these teams so will teach them how to win with this roster (obviously they could implode and suck and it will be a long year, but the goal is the former not the latter).

There were some recent optimistic things. Mooney and Kvas both looked really solid in international play. We’ll see how it all comes together. Team certainly does not look like a one seed but come playoff time I’ll take the team who’s been battle tested all year if they can find their way into the field

The roster has no superstars and nobody with that next level aggression to put someone through the wall and score a goal in the same shift or to step up when it matters. Just a bunch of similar, soft players. It's going to be boring, frustrating to watch hockey trying to grind out 3-2 wins.

Upnorthkid, don't even try to rationize with Bonin21. There was a reason why people on Gopher Puck Live referred Bonin21 as Eeyore. He is nothing more than a droopy negative anti Gopher hockey fan. The reason why he got banned from GPL because of his constant negative takes on the program. We (except Eeyore) all want the program to succeed and like all other programs there are going to be some ups and downs. But with Eeyore it's always negative, he is nothing more than a troll.

Oh I know. But someone has to try rationalize for the sake of everyone else who reads here or it would feel like the comment section of the strib or Facebook

You are seeing it more and more on GPL too. People realize Motzko is not the best way forward for this program. Even Hammy, generally very patient and supportive of the staffs, signed on (which is EXTREMELY rare) and expressed major concern.

You continue to not understand why people can't stand you. Hint: it has nothing to do with whether or not you want Bob retained as the current head coach.

Thing is I don't really care. I only care about national titles and it's been 22+ years. And I was cool with the Motzko choice, and he had some great teams, but his career title window is over. So we're looking at at least like 3 years before a new staff is in and settled and competing. 25 years with no title.
