Gold Out vs. Western Michigan

I'm guessing they are trying to do it early in the season because of the weather. The later in the year, the more chances of people having to wear jackets. Not too many people have gold jackets. Do it early when you know you can wear t-shirts or sweatshirts only. Totally guessing on that though.

I think you're dead on. Plus, it looks better in sunlight than under the lights. Enough going on for the home opener. This is the only day to do it.

Hope the team goes all gold also. I like that combo.

Thousands of empty seats will make a Gold-out difficult, even if the fans actually at the game buy into the idea. Which they won't.

This is probably a good guess but I'll go on record and say that the stakes are very high - for us - with the Western Michigan game. If the team is 2-0 with wins versus UNLV and UNH, a win against Western would give us as many wins as we've had in each of the last two seasons and give us momentum to really feel like this thing is starting to turn around. Lose, and it's "same old Gophers" again. Plus, WMU will not be a pushover opponent. Most places think they're at worst on-par with the Gophers heading into the season. Not a dig, just reality right now.

This is where Teague has to step in. Get with 3M, General Mills, etc. And have them provide 50,000
t-shirts [ med and X-large] with 3M on the back, etc and "M" football on the front. I still have the one Wells Fargo did several years back. With that many T-shirts the unit cost would be about a 1.00-1.25 if you keep it to two sizes. Hand them out as fans enter the game. Jeez, why does everything have to be such a goat f--k with this football program?

I think we should do a "Gray Day" for a game. At least for the student section. Be kind of neat.

The Student section has already been running "Gray Day" for many home games over the last couple years...

It would be nice if they covered some of those areas or something so it didn't look so putridly empty or so gray. A little color there wouldn't hurt.

dumb question - (I don't make it to many games in person because my job requires me to work on Saturday) -

I went to the season opener a few years ago, and they were giving out long-sleeved gold t-shirts for some kind of promotion. (I don't know if the shirts went to everyone, or just those with season tickets - I got the tickets through my boss).

If they want to do a "Gold-Out," then why not do a similar t-shirt promotion on the day of that game?

The part that annoys me about the Gold Out is that we have three other schools in the B1G that have gold or goldish (maize) as one of their colors. There are no other schools that have maroon. After all the failed attempts to get people to wear gold in the Dome since "maroon looked like an empty seat"* I thought they would figure it out and install white or gold seats in the Bank. Obviously they didn't and we're stuck with Gold Outs. I have 6 different Gopher jerseys, and the only gold one I have is an old hockey one that I'm a few pounds from being able to wear. As someone else mentioned, good stuff in gold is just not usually available.

*For the record, maroon doesn't look nearly as much like an empty seat as all the empty seats do! Worry about actually filling the stadium before worrying whether the seats "look" full. If that's all you want put inflatable dolls as fake fans.

Looks like Goldy's "Midas Touch" will solve our issues:

Go Gophers!!

I kinda thought it be hard to do a 'GOLD OUT' when even the football team wasn't participating.... last year in the attempted 'GOLD OUT', the team wore Gold tops, but Maroon bottoms. If you do a full-out 'GOLD OUT', Gold tops and bottoms should be the teams participation, no?

FWIW, there was no Gold Out game last year.

Exactly. This is the sort of thing that needs to wait until the stadium is always full with STH. Mostly b/c it would look better if actually executed. But also because putting it on the season tickets doesn't help publicize it when plenty of people are buying on gameday from scalpers.

My other annoyance is that they went back to calling it a "Gold Out". White Out and Black Out at least make sense. If they are going to do it they should at least stick with the more creative "Solid Gold Saturday" idea they tried in 2008 at the Dome.

aww goldy is the best. he always brings a smile to my face!

Glass half empty guy!

Yes, seriously. When you're straight up copying something that other schools do well you either A) need to do it just as well to make up for your lame copying or B) find a way to make it your own despite the fact that the core concept is the same. It's why Michigan looked so stupid when they used Seven Nation Army all throughout the Notre Dame night game last season. People heard the crowd doing it and immediately went "when did Michigan become Penn State?". The only saving grace was that they managed to do it well so at least it sounded cool while they were being lame.

Gold Out doesn't make any sense as a thing (the reason White Out was a good name was because it made sense and worked on multiple levels). If all you are offering is a "meh" attempt at copying something then you'll fail to generate the enthusiasm you want (i.e. marketing failure) and you'll open yourself to easy comparisons about how bad your attempt sucks compared to the original, well executed version.

Glass half empty guy!

I'd go with "accurate description of the current attendance" guy. Even assuming big wins over UNLV and UNH, there isn't a realistic reason that the non-sellout issue will suddenly be solved in time for an 11am Western Michigan game.

FIFY

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I always thought those sections should be gold or maroon, not battleship grey.

Living in Pittsburgh and being a Pens fan, I used to go a fair amount of playoff hockey. They would do white-out games about once a round or two and had great success; of course, they were giving everyone a t-shirt when they walked in the door.

Two years ago, against the Flyers, they had a white-out and didn’t give out the shirts and it was dreadful. You couldn’t tell that an “event” was even going on. While it’s probably partly true that fans assumed they would get a white shirt, it shows that even a strong fan base, playing against its rival, struggled to implement this.

I would say, in general, college FB fans tend to be more passionate than hockey fans. But that’s at big-time programs. Minnesota doesn’t have the base to pull this off without giving shirts to everyone as they walk in.

Gold shirt, green shirt, who gives a sht. I will continue to wear my Cupito jersey regardless of the theme.

The problem with a gold out is this:

I was just at the downtown Target and there is one entire aisle of Gopher gear! Great news! How many Gold items to you see here?

One cool thing that didn't show up, but in the lower left corner, the maroon shirt with the gray shoulders is a kid's size #51 t-shirt.

^^^^That photo says it all^^^^

Besides that, gold is not the most popular color for non-Gopher shirts, sweatshirts or jackets.

The only way it works is to have the t-shirts on each seat or sell them outside of stadium.

Make them cheap and a souvenir type promo.

Wear the trash can as a helmet. Boom, gold.
