At least they are persistent in trying it.

A gold out vs. Western Michigan?!

I have to think an intern mistakenly heard "Western" when they actually wanted the Gold Out vs. MICHIGAN. If we're going to do it against a non-conference opponent, why not Syracuse for a night game?

Weird game to pick a gold out for.

Go Gophers!!

Oh boy... Everyone knows it won't happen.

So wait, I should wear maroon? I'm confused.

Gold Gopher gear tends to be t-shirts, the sweaters are more likely to be Maroon. Perhaps they figured that for an evening game in late September, people would be wearing their maroon sweaters, while a week earlier in the daytime, they would be inclined to wear t-shirts. Perhaps there could be a Gold Out early in the year, and a Maroon out later in the year?

It appears they started shipping tickets and there wasn't a single thread about it yet.

As for the Gold-out, it doesn't matter when it is, the fans at TCF have consistently shown an inability wear a gold shirt.

To be clear, that is not my picture, I haven't received tickets. That picture came from the @GopherSports twitter account. It said "Coming soon to a mailbox near you" and linked the picture.

This pic isn't even from a gold-out, lots of people wearing gold. I've always thought Gopher fans do a great job of wearing gold, but then we try a gold-out and it never seems to work.

Outside the student section I see at least 30% (maybe more) maroon in those stands. If it were a true gold-out where 95% of the people wore gold, it would look a heck of a lot more impressive.

Let me list out why a gold out has not worked and will not til nearly all are resolved:

- Far too casual a fan base. People decide last minute whether or not to attend the game let alone coordinate a wardrobe for it. It's not a week-long activity leading up to home games, barely even a day-long thing.
- No coordination from the top-down for apparel. Most items at Goldy's Locker Room are maroon, even t-shirts. I believe the white may even outnumber the gold. Inventory at said stores does not follow the pattern they want to encourage (ie on "Gold Out" weeks they don't stock the store with gold items for those who forgot). Heck, we've talked about how a dirt-cheap XL gold shirt on every seat (40k of them gets the cost down to $2-3/shirt) could easily be covered by advertisements. Give it away if you have to.
- No coordination from the top-down for communication. The only marketing of a color-out has been a sheet of paper and reminder the home game before the event. At least now it's on the ticket. But tell me your average 50 year old knows what the heck that is.
- There's no incentive for people to follow-through. There's no reward of a cool photo or time-lapse video showing it. We haven't even historically been on a big enough tv stage for it to be pointed out by someone not at the game ("Wow I saw the stadium on TV and it was all gold, looked really sweet" effect).

We have to win to get die-hard fans. But you'd think the U could be doing more to promote this stuff than they have. And for god's sake, can we call it something cooler than a "generic-color"-out? Someone mentioned a good one.. "Solid Gold at the Bank" SOMETHING!?

you can also safely include the Metrodome in your comments. "Gold Outs" didn't work there either and the weather was not a factor. The tradition of ignoring goldouts just moved from the Metrodome to TCF Bank Stadium when the team and band moved too.

Gold out at a Gopher football game? I equate that to asking the Gopher women fans to go topless. Who in the Wide World of Sports is running the marketing department?

The real question for WM is whether we can combine recruiting budgets and just split the tab for visitors that weekend. :p

Exactly. To me this is just a symptom of a clueless athletic department and a sign of why we couldn't even sell out the Iowa game last year. When the Twins open Target Field, even though they sold out nearly every game in the first season they ran countless commercials promoting the field and asking people to put in deposits for next year. Imagine that...Build a waiting list! When TCF Bank Stadium opened there was no promotion for people to reserve their spot in line. Some have even said they couldn't get their name on a waiting list.

I think they should worry about communicating to the clueless portion of the fanbase who insists on making the only noise they'll make all day when the Gopher offense is lining up in the red zone that they need to pipe down and save their screaming for situations when the other team has the ball. Once that's been squared away, then worry about Gold Outs and the like.

Probably shoudn't do it against teams that also wear yellow.

Once they have the gold out down, they can work on 'wear the color of your seat'. That would be nice!!

This will never work until they have a free gold t-shirt sitting on the seat. Or if you assume that 60% are going to wear gold, hand out free shirts to those wearing different colors (and piss off those who already wore gold.)

I think we should do a "Gray Day" for a game. At least for the student section. Be kind of neat.

The cheap asses that only have one maroon shirt and one maroon jacket will never spend $20 on a gold shirt.

While the game choice might be questionable, at least they continue trying to make it work and I commend them for that. If they put this kind of effort into the "Ski U Mah" cheer it might have stuck by now.

Someday our fan base will get it.

I kinda thought it be hard to do a 'GOLD OUT' when even the football team wasn't participating.... last year in the attempted 'GOLD OUT', the team wore Gold tops, but Maroon bottoms. If you do a full-out 'GOLD OUT', Gold tops and bottoms should be the teams participation, no?

It would certainly help

Bingo. I went to the T'Wolves/Lakers game at the Target Center this year, and they have less die-hards than the Gophers do for sure. But they put a free white shirt on each seat, and 95% of people put them on to participate. Just get TCF Bank (or anyone else for that matter) to sponsor the back of the shirt. 40,000-45,000 gold shirts @ $2-3 a piece should be something that a company like Target, TCF Bank, 3M, or a combination of a few sponsors would be willing to spend for that many people to wear their logo around...

Sorry for the low-quality picture...it was taken with my "dumb" phone at the game...

That's because us "old" guys thought it said Old Gout and got some comfortable shoes to go with our burgundy suit coat and pants.

+1

My opinion is that it seems silly to do a "gold out" for a game against Western Michigan. If something like this is to be done, it should be done for a game where the stakes are high. Part of the reason it is tough to get something like this going at Minnesota is that we have rarely played in a game that could be considered high stakes. I think the general GopherHole fan is way too hard on other people who are willing to spend money to see the Gopher football product.

I'm guessing they are trying to do it early in the season because of the weather. The later in the year, the more chances of people having to wear jackets. Not too many people have gold jackets. Do it early when you know you can wear t-shirts or sweatshirts only. Totally guessing on that though.

^^^^^ This is the reason ^^^^^^
Most people don't own gold jackets and will not wear a hoodie just to show gold when it's 50 out.
