Man, this is a huge bummer and I had a feeling it was coming. Warning sign last year when he couldn't even crack that DJ/Spencer/Brockington rotation and rumors came out that he still needs another year at least. I also had a bad feeling when we weren't hearing anything about him from coaches or reporters over the last 4-5 months.

I suppose it's a good sign that we have a healthy program with real talent and depth unlike we've never had before, all credit to PJ for building this. You guys know that a few years a go, a 6'3 220 lb UGA transfer would have been slotted in as the guy right away.

I feel like our program really puts a premium on the aspects besides running/catching. Where as other offenses and programs may play a WR who’s only good at running streaks ours looks for players to master multiple routes, block well, give effort on secondary routes, etc.

I agree with you it is a good sign. I’m hoping that means that while the transfers/young guys may not be as athletic they are more consistent and proficient.

Why? People got way too excited. He didn't get any time here last year. There was a reason he was buried at Georgia and then here. He is a physical specimen who is not a receiver.

Totally agree. If he was not good enough to get on the field he's most likely not a game changing player. Not like we were loaded with talent outside of DJ.

I didn't. I have a lot of time to daydream at my job so last week I was thinking.

When's the last time the Gophers had a state's offensive player of the year at QB, and two high school top 100 receivers on the outside, along with a pro caliber RB and a #2 that I believe led the nation in YAC last year (or was #2 behind Jeanty).

I thought Williams was in for a huge year, but we got a very deep WR room anyhow.

The number of prestige program 4 star transfers who have stood out here has been low.

Only Ben St Juste that I can think of walked right into the starting lineup and on to the NFL and made Michigan look foolish. Quinn Carroll became a solid multi-year starter and a couple of DTs gave us quality play.

But it's mostly been a lot of guys who showed why they didn't play much at the prior place.

Jaxon Howard certainly has upside and could be a two-year starter eventually. Marcus Major was serviceable. Dylan Wright was just okay, but had a couple of key games for the Gophers, including Wisconsin 2022.

Throw those in with Carroll, St. Juste, Pinckney, Smith and I actually think the relative "success" rate on prestige program transfers has been fairly decent here.

I agree, Wright was really the only one I can think of that I would say was disappointing, he clearly had talent, but couldn’t put it all together. He still as mentioned was able to help some. Williams is now the second one, but like Wright but even more so it’s tough to say what Williams could have developed into when both left years on the table.

In your guys defense, lizard said 4 star transfers from prestige programs. That really limits the number if you're talking about transfer ranking versus high school ranking.

I agree with the overall premise that PJ has done well with guys from other P4 programs (and transfers overall) for guys to be 1) in the NFL, 2) starters or 3) meaningful depth contributors.

I think that with a 105 roster limit, it is tough for a team to carry two freak athlete WR candidates, both of whom are steep development projects for one reason or another. My guess is that Malachi Coleman--perhaps even more of a "freak athlete" than Williams--must be closer to playing, or more motivated to practice hard, than Williams ... or more willing to take a hit and hold a block ... or better at learning the the where and when of the Gophers' route tree. Or whatever. Coleman, I suspect, is the team's new freak athlete WR prospect.
