Georgia Tech QB Zach Pyron Transfers to Minnesota

No way. The Badgers had like a dozen QBs going into Spring a couple of years ago.
I think that's bad on them. I agree with Maxy. We have 5 now and unless someone hits the portal, we're done.
Lindsey, Shic, Wittke, Pyron and the freshman (can't think of his name at moment). We had 5 last year.

With the new roster limit of 105 I don't see any way we would carry more than that for QBs so agree that if we bring in someone else it will be because one of the returners decides to leave.

Tech fans seem to be very complimentary of the kid. Describing him as extremely tough and gutsy and a great team player.
Yes, I've seen that too. Certainly those fans who have much more data than a score sheet are seeing it as a loss, maybe not critical, but still a loss.

That plus PJ's intuition adds up pretty well for me.

Grab an oar Zach and give it a row!

I think most fans have settled on the idea that you will have a good backup QB is ... variable.

Anyone good enough is going to be in demand from teams who are depleted at that spot or have open competition at that spot.

I think this is kid is insurance for Lindsey and to give him competition. I would expect Lindsey to beat him out but it's good to have another QB of this caliber on the roster in case of injuries or if Lindsey turns out not to be ready.

Could be the new short yardage/Green Line QB if Drake ends up winning the starting job.

I don't know.....we have gotten pretty good at running the tush push and seems like that might be even more effective with a QB who is 6'5" 230. :)

Ryan Burns said they already paid Lindsey and so do not have enough NIL to pay for a starter level QB in the portal when the team has so many other needs to fill.
lol this is so dumb. we have roster salaries with no cap/regulation and so you just can't recruit other people. this is not be criticizing you/Burns or anything, but more is just how weirdly comical this situation has become in allocation of dollars which is so far away from what NIL compensation actually was intended for.

Lindsay is going to be a starter for the Gophers someday. But if the Lindsay experiment is a bit early next year, or if he gets injured, I think PJ has just maximized his back-up insurance policy. Pyron is experienced. He has started and performed well in some big games at the P4 level. He might turn out to be another Brosmer, a fine one-year rental, good locker room guy, no entitlement toxicity. In that case, Lindsay's apprenticeship extends one more year ... or Pyron and Lindsay share duties in 2025. I think this is a really good outcome. And it puts the 2025 QB situation to rest, meaning PJ and staff can now concentrate on strengthening other positions while other teams are still dithering in the Transfer portal's messy QB auction process.

Pyron is not an established, accomplished starter from another P4 program. Newsflash: We're not in the running for those guys. We got very lucky with Max moving up from a lower level and may not have been so fortunate again.

If we did bring in an established starter and let Linsdey remain the backup for another year or two, we'd probably say he's ready to go out and start after that. By then, to those outside of our fanbase, he'd probably look a lot like Zach Pyron, but with a worse offer list out of high school.

I have no idea of Zach is good or better than Drake. I don't think anyone else here does, either.

My point is that I think PJ is done looking for transfer QBs in this portal--even though the portal is loaded with possibilities. PJ got one who will probably compete to start in 2025, and will be a good, credible No. 2 if Lindsay's time to start has come.

Yeah, I wasn't responding to you, necessarily, but I agree with you.

Freshman Kollock arrives in January.

I think you’re right. Even a guy with Brosmer like accomplishments at the FCS level will be tough to consistently land. More often than not we’ll have to bring in someone that wasn’t very successful somewhere else or someone that hasn’t gotten much action yet. The accomplished FBS qbs in the portal are basically like trying to land five star high school qbs.

A lot also depends on what you can offer a transfer in terms of the roster situation. We could offer Brosmer the starting gig basically unopposed. For 2025 we can offer a shot at the starting gig but there are also a couple of players on the roster who have a year+ in the system and will at least get a shot at winning the job.

Makes us less attractive to a QB who is determined to start at the school they transfer to.

What big games did he perform well in? Honest question.

Agree. Out of HS he was without a doubt more highly sought.

Let’s not try to think too hard or analyze this too much. We signed him because he was the best option we were able to get in the transfer portal.

Perfect thread the needle get here for PJ who continues to out perform relative to all things portal. He’ll have these two neck and neck after the spring but then 90% chance Lindsey starts — if he falters we have a viable back up. The stash has got to go, however.
