Georgia Tech QB Zach Pyron Transfers to Minnesota

Lindsay is going to be a starter for the Gophers someday. But if the Lindsay experiment is a bit early next year, or if he gets injured, I think PJ has just maximized his back-up insurance policy. Pyron is experienced. He has started and performed well in some big games at the P4 level. He might turn out to be another Brosmer, a fine one-year rental, good locker room guy, no entitlement toxicity. In that case, Lindsay's apprenticeship extends one more year ... or Pyron and Lindsay share duties in 2025. I think this is a really good outcome. And it puts the 2025 QB situation to rest, meaning PJ and staff can now concentrate on strengthening other positions while other teams are still dithering in the Transfer portal's messy QB auction process.
There will likely be a bit of a competition but here is why I think Lindsey is 1A at this point.

He was put into a 31-0 game and coaches weren't interested in protecting him or just handing the ball off. They had him run the offense and throw the ball for future gain. He was 3 of 4 and led 2 scoring drives. He was the clear back-up meaning the coaches knew they were playing a true freshmen if Brosmer got hurt.

I think he's gonna be a good one. He actually moves pretty well for a guy his size.

Does PJ not realize that if he can just go grab a QB like Brosmer, a WR like Rashod Bateman, and a safety like Antoine Winfield Jr we could compete for a title next year?
PJ should hire Rick Spielman as our GM a la Lombardi. But he might try to trade NIL $$ for 7th round draft picks...

I think you’re right. Even a guy with Brosmer like accomplishments at the FCS level will be tough to consistently land. More often than not we’ll have to bring in someone that wasn’t very successful somewhere else or someone that hasn’t gotten much action yet. The accomplished FBS qbs in the portal are basically like trying to land five star high school qbs.
I think guys like Max will be even harder to get after the way he performed this year for the gophers. A lot of schools that might have turned a side eye on an FCS quarterback, saw how he performed, and will take a hard second look. I don’t think that was necessarily the case last season.

Bringing in a guy like Max also tells Lindsey "you're not going to be the QB next year". A 5th year senior isn't going to transfer to your school unless they essentially are given the job and you're not going to get other 5th year seniors if you lie to one of them.

I think if you have a guy like Lindsey and you think he "might" be the guy next year and you want him to compete for the job, a guy like Pyron is perfect. He was a SO last year and has gotten significantly P5 playing time, he was a high level recruit (slightly higher rated than Lindsey) and seems like he has the tools.

Getting Pyron is essentially like if Jacob Knuth never transferred out and we have a competition for that spot. I think Lindsey probably wins out but I'm glad he'll have to earn it.

I actually like Pyron more than most. Showed some nice flashes at GT behind a good QB in King. Yes I would've preferred a known quantity like Brosmer but I like that we have a PJF guy and now a backup/competition that has at least played at a P4 level.

And 2 years to play.

After a long and very thorough 5 minute search on YouTube, I found these two videos: one vs. (ironically) Virginia Tech, the other vs. Notre Dame.

He makes some nice throws, and appears to have some running ability. Announcers comment favorably on his competitive nature.

I like him.

Exhaustive research 🔬 proves Zach has a 90% likelihood of being the next Steve Montana!

I wonder if JD has any eligibility left? :)
