Things can still change, but as of now, Gopher recruit Gaston Diedhiou will not be enrolled at Minnesota for the upcoming semester according to sources in Spain.

HOOP DREAMS 1 for 2

If Diedhiou never makes it onto campus, is that necessarily a bad thing? It seems like we are making pretty good progress on a group of recruits in 2015 that arguably are higher rated and less of a unknown commodity. I don't know. I'm just asking the question.

Going in to the season with just 11 eligible scholarship players seems dicey to me. It's extremely unlikely anyone will red shirt now. Upside is we should have a scholarship available for a mid-season transfer should any interesting names pop up.

Pretty much this. Let us pray to the Ghosts Who Shall not be Named for good health.

Are we going to see some official correspondence from the team itself versus just a post by the Gopher Hole Staff? I believe the Gopher Hole Staff scooped the story, it would just be nice to hear from the staff the details?

This may just be the opportunity that Kendall Shell has been waiting for....he may just be a little small ;).

In all seriousness, this stinks. Hope he can get whatever it is he needs figured out.

Always appeared unlikely to work out with Diedhiou (both respect to initially joining the program and also longer-term). Things could always change, but if he never joins the team I don't see it as a negative.

Plenty of guys and experience on this team. Non-issue.

Example of a roster make-up that is a little bit concerning:
Marquette starts the season with 9 eligible scholarship players; tallest being 6'7"; 4 upperclassmen.

Good scoop guys. Not shocked since this was rumored here for a while but I am a sucker for the romance of a foreign diamond in the rough big man story that seems to happen, though Konate can still provide that.

I love this site! no matter what time I come here there is always some gopher news that I'm reading for the first time! Now we know why our name was included with Brown last week, both Doogie and Matt kid were wrong about a schollie not being available.

So wait, is he here or not?

Amelia's story said he's not admitted but he's in Minneapolis now and will be taking English classes on campus and they hope to have him by winter. Now we have people saying he's not here? Which is it?

Having him miss the fall semester isn't that big a deal IMO. This year is just prep for next year, when we'll need him. Sort of like Jones with the football team (except Jones hopefully gets his scholarship).

I assume Shell will get a scholarship for at least a semester again?

no one said he's not here, gh post said he will not enrolled at the u for the first semester

I am under the impression that Diedhiou being here earlier this summer was more of a visit than a long term deal.

Amelia said he's not here. Her story said he is "expected to arrive yet this week." The photos on GH were from earlier this summer.

This University is never going to have a real athletic program. Can you tell me that every foreign person who can pass all the other academic requirements
has some bureaucrat decide his english is not good enough to be successful? The kid passed a battery of other tests to qualify. I had professors at the University that needed translators to be able to understand them. Take some economics or stats classes some time. Things like this will shorten young Pitino's shelf life at this University. What a joke...

I tend to agree...

double post, please remove admins.

Nice to know we have an admissions director who is so open to talking to the press about a student who is not even a student at the U...I would be livid if I were Gaston and Pitino

Some strong words from Doogie on the admissions department:

"Failed" calculus at the U because of the same deal(48% on the final for a B-, finished with an b- but my overall percentage was well below the normal failure line, I didn't learn anything, and few others did). My TA literally could not speak English and the professor was eccentric as all hell, wouldn't turn around and look at the class just wrote and talked to the chalk board. ECON professors were all fresh off the boat from European nations with THICK accents.

I'm not advocating that Gaston get in even though he cannot speak English, just agreeing with m2s that this is quite the hypocrisy from the U.

Sidenote: Why does the strib article have a mugshot of him as the cover story's picture? Looks like he commit a crime...

Things are often not what they seem if you accept only what you're told.

Consider what may actually be at play here and different ways of handling it. See if you don't conclude this path may be the best available.

Thats deep man....

And we are to compete with those schools that bring em in no problem.....

OK, there could be various explanations. By far the simplest one (and per Occam's Razor the most likely) is that the U has a hyper-sensitive admissions dept when it comes to sports, in particular the men's basketball program. We have seen it before.

If you are alluding to the possibility that the staff just decided that maybe they don't want him...why don't you just say so? You hold yourself out as a reporter, so if you have the knowledge, then report. If you don't have the knowledge, then why don't you just say this is a possibility but you don't know?
