Yes, I’m looking forward to the season’s first measuring stick showdown. Plus, CBS Sports has a recently published piece about Marquette. So why wait to highlight the impending collision between two on the rise programs?

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Wisconsin women's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) battled on the road but came up just short in a 65–62 overtime loss to Marquette (2-0, 0-0 Big East). The Badgers led for more than 36 minutes of game time but couldn't fend off a late Golden Eagles push that forced overtime

Looked at the box score for Marquette vs Wisconsin... 4 Marquette starters had 36-39 minutes with the 5th having 44 minutes.

Looks like us last year. Hoping that we have enough depth to avoid that this year.

The bad news about what happened is that Marquette’s injured list got a little bit longer. The game started with the appearance of Abbey Cracknell in a walking boot and moving with the assistance of crutches after getting spun to the floor in an awkward fashion in the opening game of the season. The game ended with Kennedi Perkins not even in the arena after getting a neck brace and backboard for her stretcher ride to an ambulance after falling and striking the back of her head against a Wisconsin player’s knee. (By the way: Head coach Cara Consuegra said everything was essentially precautionary after the game, and the team Instagram Story’d an update on Sunday: “Thank you to everyone who has reached out about Kennedi Perkins. Kennedi is doing well and we appreciate everyone’s thoughts & prayers.”)

Those two injuries are on top of the already known done-for-the-season injuries for Aryelle Stevens (Achilles) and JJ Barnes (knee). What passes for good news here is that Marquette has 15 women on the roster this season, so at least Consuegra wasn’t coming at this from a shorthanded perspective anyway. But there’s a difference between losing a deep bench forward from last year and a freshman who was going to have to earn minutes and losing two rotation players, including Perkins, who was a supersub in the backcourt a season ago. In the best case scenario, I doubt Perkins will even travel to Minnesota for this game so we’ll see how that leaves the Golden Eagles.

Thanks for the update. We're not the only team dealing with adversity. It's like life in general, just when you get in "Whoa is Me"mode, you look around and realize that there are people who a running a far rougher road than me.

Sorry! I know! We sports fans hate it when perspective enters the conversation. :)

And in job postings the Strib had.....they specifically noted the sports focus was going to go away from game coverage. Also, with the "early" deadlines that will only get worse in the new year when the paper is published in Iowa.....there will be no game coverage in print editions. Print edition may well be gone by Final Four time at the rate it is going.

Who reads the print version?

I would like the website to at least have a preview on gameday, and a gamer posted a couple hours after the game.

I mean the U can't even post the post game press conferences to youtube timely or evenat all. But, everytime I log in to look I see Jan Jensen at Iowa.

Love the Gophers defensive intensity but my gosh their layups are coming up short. Imagine if they could hit a couple of those. Hope their defense can keep it up.

My first half thoughts:

Positives:
McKinney, Battle, and GG are locked in!
Solid defense, really getting them to play fast and turn the ball over.
Solid ball movement

Negatives:
Transition defense needs to be better!
Hart missing so many easy baskets. Needs to keep head up and find the cutter
Looks like a lot of empty seats. People wanted a better non conference yet not showing up.
Looks like Tracy Breahers is on crutches?

Need to put bubble wrap around the 9 players we have playing :)

Go Gophs! Keep it up!

Marquette is dealing with some key injuries, but they were picked to finish second in the Big East, behind UConn.

Good synopsis. Also wondering about Tracy Berchers.

Would love to see an opponent’s scouting report on McKinney. She is right handed, but wants to finish left. Wants to come back to the left even when right is open. But teams shade her right when she drives, which is a bad scout.

Getting a little sloppy. Need Braun to not force bad shots. You can tell Marquette wants to run any chance they get.

Marquette is a foul machine and turnover machine. I give the Gophers credit, but starting to think finishing 2nd in the Big East isn't what it's cracked up to be. It's UCONN and a bunch of.....

Good to see the guards rebounding! Heyer was their best rebounder at both ends.. plus she had some grit on the boards… The guards will need to board up all season

Size of crowd is surprisingly small. Do they need to promote this team better? Give away some tickets get people into building.

First "good" team they're playing along with a Wild game tonight? I would guess more press and attendance going forward.

Marquette will win a lot of games this year. Have a ton of experience. We just pounced early and an off night shooting for them. This will be a good resume win come tourney time.

Always thought that GG and Battle have always been pretty good rebounders over the years. They both have a nose for the ball. Couple of really good, long defensive holds in the 9:30 to play area. Seems like they've focused on not letting the stars get theirs, and seem to be having pretty good success of not letting them have good looks.
