Game 3: Gophers host Marquette (11-11-25)

Impressive W! Fun to watch the D and have 5 on the floor all able to score in different ways!

Explain this dynamic...I suppose it is arguable...but Braun and Battle should be our best players.
Their scoring after 3 games:
Braun 5, 17 and now 9
Battle 0, 9 and now 7
Seems bizarre, seems worrisome, easy to say it doesn't matter and winning by 40 against Marquette maybe eliminates or quells any reticence to be all in going forward...if there was any. I'm still of the belief whatever was bothering Heyer was not fear of losing playing time. Just seems odd these two are not scoring to their capabilities.
We definitely have coach P's most talented team. Anxious to see where the journey leads.
Very nice win tonight!

I really like that they're having different players handle the ball out front (instead of just Amaya). It's positionless basketball plus Sofie (or Tonga). Love the depth, even without Heyer and Woodson.

Coach P coaches team and they seem to be buying in. They have a lot of balance. It’ll be interesting to see how teams handle the balance of the team.

Battle and Braun had 14 assists and 17 rebounds tonight combined

First "good" team they're playing along with a Wild game tonight? I would guess more press and attendance going forward.
There won't be much newspaper coverage from the Star Tribune. Their 4 page daily sports section has moved on from lots of game coverage. Very unlikely they will put a beat writer on the Gopher women. Ch 9 does more Gopher news due to the coach's show. Ch 4 with Mike Max is useless. Ch 5 often does a good job, too. Once Big Ten season starts, we do typically see better attendance.

Although, there is a Strib game story out there now by Patrick Reusse, which fits their plan of having columnists doing some coverage. Never saw Patrick at the game, however.

On paper, they are expected to be the best two players, but Grocholski and McKinney are phenomenal too. When all four of them are on the court, you might be able to guard one or two of them well, but not all of four of them all the time. I'm not worried. Defenses pick their poisons and some nights will be quieter than others.

Coach P has also said that she doesn't want anyone to look at any one column on the box score to determine who contributes or not, because she hasn't built a team where one player is expected to do just one thing very well.

Braun's played what like 10 games in past 2 years, a bit of rust expected

Gophers are really good team. They are tenacious on defense, have really good passing chemistry and rebounding. You could actually see how this coaching staff has them prepared at times. I thought Gophers had a great scout of Marquette and executed a great game plan tonight. Was a fun game to be at. Hope they run some ticket specials for kids as the games are a lot more fun with fans in the stands. Ticket prices are up this year but that is understandable with increased cost. Just hope they have some ticket specials for youth groups and kids, they bring enthusiasm to game. U of M students get in free, hope the U reminds them. 41% from 3 and 51% shooting, not a bad night. Nice to have some depth this year. This year has the potential to be a fun run.

Beat a ranked Maryland team then you'll be all over ESPN.

And only 2 turnovers and leading the D with Battle taking on the 6 ft 3 Forbes which was incredible to watch. The balance of having 5 scorers on the floor at all times is huge for the offense. 13 pts in 23 minutes for Brylee. RAH!

^THIS^
I loved watching Gracie and Maya beat on Forbes. By the middle of the 3rd I believe she'd rather have been most anywhere but in the paint. Let's hope young #35 is taking notes. When your guards can post, life is good.

I know eventually we will need Battles scoring; but, really have liked her focus on defense, rebounding, and getting her team going. She seems to be on another level so far this early season. (Being a senior helps I am sure)

I haven't loved what I've seen from Tonga during the non-Hart minutes. Curious to see if we use some of these early games to try going small in case that's something we're forced to lean on this year.

In the game when Woodson got hurt they spent some time with the small ball with her at the 5.

I am curious to see if Zoey could play that when she comes back from her injury (unless the plan is to redshirt her) I thought she was suppose to be like Annika Stewart last year.

I think that was the hope that her game could develop like Stewart. Mostly because she does have an outside shot. I am thinking though that with her starting the year injured she probably will not end up in the rotation.
