GAME #25: Gophers (16-8, 5-6) @ #21 wisconsin (19-5, 6-5) [ESPN, 2/13, 8:00PM]

teams are learning how to defend us better.

outside of math we are often a step slow.

our lack of a solid pf is becoming more evident.

once again we had spurts where the guys seem to have unplugged their brain.

fought hard at the end.

need a win at northwestern.

andre h is slowly getting better. coach p said he played aggressive for 25 minutes tonight.

EE is a joke. Austin Hollins is weak and nonaggressive. This team plays hard and do not give up but the talent is not there.

I thought that EE kept their big guy out of the paint for a good portion of the game. Mo was a non-factor though. I didn't like the shot that King took with 1 minute to go. He should have passed it to Dre.

We need to take the lead and keep It - we are always behind on the road. Stop to's and defend the 3!!!
Every road game we were at least 7 pts ahead and immediately went on a scoring drought

Nah, there have been notably bad games called against us this year, this wasn't one of them.

You must have been watching a different game from me. The big thing in this game was the touch fouls as it has been all year. There were multiple times that a simple touch foul was called on the gophers that wasn't called on a similar situation for the badgers. It has to be tough as a player to find a rhythm in those circumstances. They didn't play their best game of the year but let's be honest with ourselves here; they would either need a Westbrookish performance from someone or for Richard Pitino to magically be Rick Pitino for the night (i.e. High profile coach/program) to win at the kohl center nowadays.

I know northwestern did it this year but Wisconsin shot historically bad in that game.

I am so sick of big ten officiating, it sucks. Period. Exclamation point. Etc.

Tough loss, Mo and EE need to get their **** together. Neither showed up tonight. Mathieu, Dre, and Malik played pretty solid. Everyone else was mediocre at best. We still could have won the game even though we played so poorly. This team desperately needs to go on a winning streak.

Bo has the fans taught well, I sat in the lower bowl and all of the elderly fans were bitching everytime they called a foul on Wisconsin. I forgot how annoying most of the elderly UW alumni are at Wisconsin games.

Lastly, there was literally a middle aged man pissing into a snowbank no more than 10 feet from the exit of the Kohl Center. I've never seen anything like it.

I thought King played horrendous, I don't know where his mind was, but it certainly wasn't on basketball tonight. All-in-all, a lot of really stupid and avoidable turnovers by the team tonight. Not going to win many games with our heads that far up our backsides. Not at all impressed. Also, need to end those long scoring droughts and defend the 3 better.

I'm also starting to think we are a NIT team and I'm kind of ok with that.

Nope, I watched the same game, and as poorly officiated games go this year, this one wasn't near the top. Ultimately the refs didn't cause us to lose that game; poor to mediocre performances by virtually everyone except Dre did.

And the moans and groans every time there was a perceived non-call against the Gophers.

The team lacked both focus and intensity tonight. The early 7 point lead was lost entirely due to unforced turnovers and you absolutely can't have that on the road. I was also disappointed with the lack of fundamentals on defense (usually very good, but tonight our guys were jumping at shot fakes and taking really low percentage gambles on steals) and the lack of any discernible plan on offense. This was a very frustrating game because in a lot of ways it was there for the taking, but the Gophers seemed like they were down 20 when they were down just single digits. A lot of credit goes to Wisconsin though, they played well and made it difficult early for our bigs to establish themselves. I still think there was money to be made down low if either Elliott or especially Mo (because he's a better scorer) played with a bit of intensity.

Ausin Hollins: 3-6 from the field 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 6 points. Austin is what he is at this point and that's a role player (maybe not even a starter) on a real contending team.

The announcers mentioned tonight that the Gophers were 2-49 in their last 51 road games against ranked opponents...how is that even possible? You have to be all sorts of pathetic to put together a record like that and this teams has been in the NCAA tournament at least 3 times during that joke of a streak. My own opinion is that we need to recruit attitude in addition to talent. Too many passive players on the Gophers over the years and the guys who've lead us to those rare road wins have had supreme confidence in themselves (ex: Westbrook).

Overall, a very ugly loss, but not an unexpected one. Absolutely have to beat Northwestern on Sunday, or we can start talking about next year.

No, you merely have to play in the B1G.

I mean, the Gophers just don't seem to want to make the tournament that badly. A bubble team who has their mind set on making the tournament, certainly doesn't make 4-5 turnovers in a stretch of 3 or so minutes. They never just step up and play a real clean, confident game when they are in the road or when they play a team "better" than them. Their leash is about as short as it gets now. I will venture to say Northwestern is a must win if we want to keep our tournament hopes alive.

lol what BS. 2-49 (now 2-50) is almost impossible to achieve. You could put a Missouri Valley team in the B1G and they'd do better than that.

@ nothwestern or vs iowa.

Its pretty bad when you think about how many times we've played Penn St, Northwestern, Nebraska and the couple other yearly bottom feeders in that span. To only be able to take two wins from that is just embarrassing. I think Tubby had a lot to do with that, but I guess we'll see in the next few years.

Aren't you the same clown who said it was ridiculous to give Coach Kill a raise and/or extension?

Not much of an excuse for Mo not even touching the ball in the paint until the final 2 minutes. He's been arguably our best scorer since last Wisky game.

There's little reason for Mo to be in the game if he's not scoring. The BTN review raved about Wisconsin's inside game tonight. And in each of the 4 highlights they showed on it (along with a bunch of other highlights that preceded this breakdown), Mo was at a virtual standstill watching UW players own him.

He's developed some nice offensive moves, but his defense is just sooooo bad, he can hardly stop anyone. At some point he's got to dig down into his gut and force himself to move his feet laterally. Not sure if he saves all of his energy for the other end of the court or what, but he's not very valuable to the team if he can't play a lick of D.

I wasn't expecting us to win last night but what seems a bit frustrating to me is that the team can find another gear when it needs to but doesn't seem to realize that if they played with the same sense of urgency they do when they played from behind they wouldn't be behind in the first place. If that makes sense I guess.

oh, and Wisconsin sucks.

4 against 5 is not a winning combination against a decent team. As I have said all year, we need a PF in the worst way. Joey and Oto are not. Boy Trevor would have been nice in this.

This game was a mixed bag. Wisconsin definitely played better on both ends of the court than they did here. That - and their overall righting of the ship - was expected. I'm just disappointed in the sluggishness of the Gopher team in this game. They had their moments, but as EG said, they didn't play with the energy and intensity that you need to bring in league games in the best conference in the country. I don't know if this team is low on gas at this point in the season or what, but they need to get a second wind and fast.

I suppose the good news is that, even with them being as sluggish and turnover-prone as they were, they were still in this game. Generally it was winnable with a better effort. It's what I've been saying all along: if they bring a good game to the arena, they're good enough to win. Bob Knight used to say that, if you give 100%, the scoreboard will take care of itself.

Loved the shot of Bo counting his players.

Why does he feel the need to do that? I thought he had a proven towel-handoff technique.

One thing I have noticed lately...

I thought we were going to be this high energy pressing team? When was the last time we had a breakaway dunk off of a forced turnover? Don't get me wrong we are getting steals but nothing is leading to fast breaks. Can we please try to mix up our press if we are going to stress that this is the type of team we are? Try to trap people! Wisconsin isn't exactly the most skilled team at the guard position.

We do a man-to-man press. Bo simply allowed Hayes and Kaminsky to bring the ball up last night. No way EE or Mo can guard either of those guys the full length of the court. Thus our press was broke.

Outside of Mathieu we don't have the quick players to run the pressing defensive system Pitino prefers.

Also; the worst call of the game was the 3rd foul on Mo. Hand-checking the air currents? WTF

Yep. Our team lacks quickness. I know Martin will improve that at the 4, but I'm not sure the other players will because I don't know much about their quickness. If we can get Piper and Mahmoud we would improve even more in that area. We would also improve our length, which we really need to do to play league winning defense.

True on the length part. Look at math, andre and austin at the 1,2 and 3. 5'9, 6'1 and 6'5. Am I close? Anyway that is pretty short.

Remember when people on here thought Austin Hollins had NBA potential?
