Three Nebraska moments

One: Britt Prince arrives

If you’ve been living in a corn husk, here’s a few highlights of the highly rated 5’11” freshman guard who is averaging 14.1 points and 2,7 rebounds in 25 minutes.

Two: Natalie Potts departs

Potts’ 22 points and 7 rebound in 23 minutes performance against South Dakota helped move the Huskers to 4-0. Unfortunately, 10 minutes into their next win versus North Alabama, last season’s Big Ten Freshman of the Year suffered a season-ending knee injury.

The 6’2” sophomore forward was averaging 14.4 points and 7.4 rebounds in 21 minutes per game. Filling the gap left by Potts probably means more minutes for 6’3” senior center Alexis Markowski who is averaging 14.5 points and 8.3 rebounds in 23 minutes.

Three: Creighton turns Nebraska blue (again)

Not surprisingly, following Potts’ injury, Nebraska dropped their next outing on the road at rival Creighton 74-80. It was those pesky three pointers. The Huskers were 5-17 from behind the arc while the Blue Jays were 13-29.

“It’s really not a secret,” Nebraska head coach Amy Willams said. “It came down to 3-point shooting. And particularly there in the fourth quarter. I thought we did everything we wanted to do. We hit 50 points in the paint. We did what we needed to do there, but they hit 13 3s and we hit five.”

It was the Blue Jays third straight win over Nebraska.

Last season’s meetings

Minnesota and Nebraska split two games last season. The first at Williams Arena was memorable because Amaya Battle gunned in a clutch three with 9 seconds remaining allowing Gopher fans to exhale on the way to a 62-58 victory.

The return match in Lincoln, a month later, was post Mara Braun injury and resulted in a 51-70 Gopher loss. One encouraging trend from last season’s two outings was Mallory Heyer producing 16 points 7 rebounds in 36 minutes in game 1 and 15 points 10 rebounds in 39 minutes in game 2. We’re going to need that sort of production this Sunday.

The Husker schedule

Nebraska opened with five wins: Omaha 88-48, SLU 78-68, Southern 84-58, South Dakota 113-70 and North Alabama 85-48. Then came the loss at Creighton 74-80 before two more wins Kansas City 84-38 and Lindenwood 69-48.

Good to play Nebraska now. They seem discombobulated since the Potts injury (leading scorer and rebounder). 3 different starting lineups in 3 games since Potts was injured. Like the Gophers, they haven’t beaten anybody good, but they did lose again to rival Creighton (after the Potts injury).

Stewart leaving really hurts Nebraska with Potts injury. Hart/Stewart combination versus Markowski is better matchup than last year for Gophers.

With daunting conference road schedule, would be great start to conference season for Gophers to win on Sunday.

I'm a big Gopher fan for this one. Nebraska has looked bad since losing Potts. Since Braun's injury the Gophers just look different and that's a good thing. Battle has stepped up and looks like she's playing at ease. I think she's finally decided it's her team and looks more sure of herself. Go Go Gophers!

The return (revenge?) of Annika Stewart. Last year was a very strange year for Stewart. Amy Williams seemed to sour/give up on Stewart, despite her shooting improvement. In conference play, her efg% (64.1%) was way up because her 3-point fg% was way up (42.9%). Her per-minute player efficiency rating was likewise way up in conference play last year, and was by far the highest of her career at Nebraska. But her minutes went way down in conference play last year, down to 5.7 minutes per game, by far the lowest of her 4-year career at Nebraska. So it made perfect sense for Stewart to look elsewhere for her Covid year. I'm guessing Stewart will be highly motivated for Sunday's game, even beyond being hyped for the conference opener.

Need to start getting some cutoffs and hands in the passing lanes on defense and get a dang rebound.

Shooting is horrible , 1/10 from 3. Not boxing out 4 rebounds. Hopefully, they can regroup and we will get 2 see how resilient they r in the 2nd half.

The amount of lay ups this team misses is simply amazing. Hart takes too long in the post. Defenses has time to read and react.

Not only that, we've held Neb. to just 4 points in the last 6+ minutes and can't make up any ground. Ugh!

Are they expecting contact on every lay ups attempt ? Leaving wide open shots short

Not shocked the Gophers are playing like this. More of the same shit they've done all season long, this time they're not playing a fucking scrub.

Cellophane on the Gopher rim today, can’t finish or buy one

Battle playing tentative, needs to take charge out there

Hart standing around in the paint on a missed 3 by NB n their player walks into the lane for the 2 point put back. She has picked it up on the offensive end.

21 Pt difference in this game is the 7 extra 3 pointers they have made. They also have 7 more 3 Pt attempts. Nebraska is more a 3 pt shooting team than we are. When they shoot 39% they are going to be tough to beat. Had some runs to almost get back to single digits, but then Nebraska just make shots.

Have to be double digits in missed bunnies today.
That and they keep leaving Nebraska wide open on threes. Gophers keep sagging off the 3 point shooter and Nebraska makes them pay for it. All the missed layup's not gonna cut it in Big 10 play.

The missed 3's aren't as concerning to me as the missed lay-ups. As we all know, 3-point shooting can come and go, sometimes with no rhyme or reason. But the Gophers have missed at least a dozen lay-ups today. If you even make 2/3's of them, that's 16 points and you're in the ballgame.

Just not the ladies day. This is a good game to remind the players about the rigors of Big10 basketball.
