Future Gopher Coach Discussion

If Barr gets eliminated we all wait for some good news early next week. It's possible he has known a move is coming for a while and slightly checked out on his team like Motzko did with his 1 seed Cloud team.

lol no and every single interview says that. A guy coming in missing the tourney from a very down HE is not going to get the fan base excited, not to mention it’s not how Coyle has historically operated.

So we want to hire a coach that is checked out.. That makes sense...LOL

Maine eliminated after expectations to make the tourney.
Under Barr (5 seasons): 87-71-20
1 conf tourney title
2 NCAA tourneys, 0 wins
Loss as a 1 seed. Loss as a 2 seed.
Helped AC to several national titles out east (recruited for Providence, Union and won one at UMass).

And you’re selling the fan base that they should ne excited because he was checked out because we guaranteed him the job? What?

He seems like a good coach, but there is nothing on that resume that is exciting to a Gopher fan base other than that he’s young and is from MN and went to shattuck (before leaving and not being here for the last quarter century).

I think he’s probably a pretty good coach, but if that was his response to being told this may be his job, that is a MAJOR red flag

100% agree. If someone can excuse a coach checking out on his team, that is crazy. Red flags to me.

Agreed. No thanks.

Check the staff he can bring. Improvements across the board.

But my opinion is known and I'm not gonna change it. You have to make a big bet sometimes.

Skip the new guy O'Connor and keep Martin, coaching the D.

Yeah, that’s a hard and fast pass in my opinion.

Would you like a national championship winning head coach? He has one as an assistant.
Steve Miller has 3, we should hire him. Oh yeah never mind he's real old
Mayotte at CC has one. Why are you not on his train?
Or Brett Larson because he got a couple at UMD as an assistant and he even made a national title game! The winning percentage is also better and he recruits locally already.
/s

To be clear, I would not be impressed if we hired Larson or Miller (Mayotte has been all the hype several times but just cannot seem to get CC over the hump again and I miss seeing CC in the NCAA tourney). However, citing having won a national title as an assistant is about as meh of a selling point as one can come up with.

I'd be more excited about his potential as a recruiter at a big school given he was the recruiting lead to get Union to a title, Providence to a title, UMass to a title, and has made Maine relevant again for the first time in 20 years. This year for Maine is a little bit of a worry to me as they were picked to be up there with BC, BU, and Providence as conference contenders and just looked meh all year. They do have a pretty good (for Maine) Fr class that's there as well as like 100 guys committed for next year (Barr seems to aggressively over-recruit, which could get really interesting here at MN, and none of them are "blue-chip" guys, but still interesting to have that many names)

I don't understand what you're talking about at this point
No one cares that anyone won a title as an assistant or won one previously unless you just won one in the last few years as a HC. It’s irrelevant to the here and now. You can find people who have been part of title teams who would have no business being head coaches here

Quite the take to play down a national champion winning head coach especially one that embarrassed the Gophers.

Let me know which former head coach I downplayed that beat the gophers in my post.

Again, no one is going to be pumped about Ben Barr for being an assistant on a national title team. He has many other things that are exciting on his resume though which is what one is selling if you’re hiring him

What are you talking about? Rick Bennett, the assistant that Barr can bring with him, beat the Gophers in the 2014 title game. You don't think that would be a good person to have on the staff?

Need to think beyond just one coach. The Gophers need an overhaul.

And yes Barr helping architect multiple title winning teams is a good thing that will help him in any interview.

Are you hiring Rick Bennett? Do you think Maine is just not going to appoint anyone?

You hire your hc in any sport for the hc, not who they may employ as an assistant.

I agree Bennett is a good coach. It would very much surprise me if he came with given he has zero ties here and has a ton out east, where he could easily be a HC again.

If you’re citing a pro of Barr is he may bring an assistant coach with with zero evidence that would be the case, that’s a wild line of reasoning.

Again I really like Barr as a coach for him (particularly his historic ability to identify and connect with talent). His assistants I think I’d go a very different way than bringing Bennett for our typical recruiting pipelines and I’d like some continuity in our own staff (Martin would be my choice).

Bennett could coach forwards and Martin D. Of course it's zero guarantee Bennett would come. But it's a definite possibility. Overall, it's a Gopher worthy staff a and Barr is a Gopher worthy HC candidate. Part of that is because the Gopher coaching pipeline is so weak.

I want no part of Bennett. The way he was dismissed from Union says it all.

I would prefer a head coach has won a natty as a head coach.

Not interested in handing the job to a coach that hasn’t even won an NCAA tournament game in 5 years of coaching. His record as a head coach is meh…at best.

Raboins Augustana also loses and in all likelihood will miss the postseason

Resume
52-42-12 in 3 years as Augustana moved D1
No NCAA tourneys or wins
Time as an AC at the U would be his biggest selling point as was our heavy hitter recruiting at that time
