Pitino was on with Tom Pelissero last night. Here is a full recap. This is not verbatim, but close:

Pitino on Gopher caravan tour...It's been great. What makes all of these places tremendous is the people. The amount of support that the entire state of Minnesota gives the program is what makes this place so special. It's been great.

Pitino on what Gopher fans want to hear from him...Most fans want to hear about my vision for the program. I give a little bit of opinion on each of the guys but to be honest I haven't spent a ton of time with them on the court.

Pitino on Coleman's transfer...Joe reached out to me a couple of days ago and told me that he was thinking about it for a while that he wanted a change of scenery. He's a great kid who has a great family. We wish him nothing but the best. He would have been great for our system and I think he'll be great wherever he goes.

Pitino on the new guys coming into the program (note, he can't talk about Smith yet)...Deandre Mathieu is a necessary addition as we didn't have a pure point guard in our system. I really like to play at least two PGs. Andre Hollins is a great player and he can play several positions. Daquein McNeil is a multiple position guy who has great skill, great speed and athleticism. His best basketball is ahead of him. Those are two quality additions.

Pitino on makeup of roster...
We could have some three-guard line-ups. We may have to play small, that's just the way it works. When you are looking for Bigs late, it's tough to find. If we need to do that we'll do that. We've done it before.

Pitino on front court...I think Mo Walker and Elliot Eliason will have great years. Once they get in shape they will be in great shape. They both are working extremely hard. They are both going to have great years if they continue to work the way they are.

Pitino on Walker...He's been awesome. He's lost 20 pounds and needs to lose 30 or 40 more pounds. He's been great. He reminds me of Nazr Mohammed who played for my father. Mo is very talented he just needs to get in great shape. He's been extremely positive and he's off to a great start.

Pitino on playing a true 5...
I'd love to have a true 5, and a 4 man who can shoot to stretch the defense.

Pitino on Eliason...He's been great too over the last couple of weeks. It's just staying in the gym, living in the gym. It's not just out on the court, it's what you put in your body. When you go in the weight room you have to treat it like a practice.

Pitino on what else he'd like to do to roster before next year...I'd like to get another Big if the right fit is out there. Maybe get another shooter in there. Certainly we need to beef up our front court as much as possible.

Pitino on starting 5...It's probably too soon to think about that. Some guys are great in individual instruction and not great in practice. Once we get into 5 on 5 in June I'll have a better gauge. I'd be very surprised if the two Hollins guys are not major, major parts of what we'll do. They've been so great and have embraced what we're doing.

Pitino on researching other Big Ten teams...
I watched our game versus Michigan State at Williams Arena today on my ipad. I will watch a game or two a day.

Pitino on expectations in Year 1...We have to worry about today. We have to work extremely hard on what we want to implement. I'm really excited about the Staff. I am one of the youngest guys coaching and I wanted a staff that is similar. We have three guys that are tireless, tireless recruiters that work hard on the court too. I want them all to be well rounded. I want three great assistants that will make me better.

Go Gophers!!

Really encouraging notes about Elliason and Mo.

They just have unique skill sets. Elliason is a 7 footer who plays with a motor. He isn't extremely skilled, but if he can turn himself into a guy who can defend, deflect a lot of passes/shots, run the floor and be agile enough to play the pick and roll. . .he might have NBA potential (think Festus Ezeli, Steimsma, etc.).

Mo is a guy who needed to lose some weight. He is coming off of knee surgery and it's nice to see a guy like Mo step up to the challenge rather than simply transfer. It would have been a shame to see Mo not be an effective college basketball player because of his own doing (the weight). Now that he's shedding the pounds, I'm excited to see what he can do. He's a skilled guy and even if the injuries keep him from being everything he could have been, it's encouraging that he's doing everything in his power to give himself a shot.

I think Eliason probably needs to work on his footwork in the paint if he's gonna try and get a shot at the NBA. He's a tad slow.

I like what you said about Mo. So miuch upside for him...let's hope he sheds some pounds and keeps healthy.

@gophersports: Pitino on how #Gophers will play up-tempo vs Wisconsin. "Good question. But I want to know how they are going to slow Minnesota down."

The same thing they do every game, Pinky. Hold the ball for 34 seconds and launch up a 3.

I thought that, the few times we trapped against Wisconsin this year, it made them uncomfortable and created a few turnovers. It confounded me that Tubby didn't notice that and stay with it until the Badgers make an adjustment. I personally think that a trapping defense is the way to throw the skunks off their glacial pace.

I think we know that the kids are listening to Pitino is Mav is eating better and Mo lost 20 pounds already! Mo could push Elliott for the starting job is he maximizes his time. Glad Pitino is hitting the right chords with the bigs. Love how he answers questions.

I really like Mo's potential. He is actually a very skilled player who just needs to lighten up.

@gophersnow: I was surprised to hear Pitino said forward Charles Buggs is only 185 pounds. He said Buggs needs to get up to about 215-220

Go Gophers!!

Really starting to wonder what the old S+C coach under Tubby did. I thought one of the main reasons for redshirting Buggs was to get him to bulk up? The players should take some blame too, but WTF.

Between Mo being too heavy, EE being out of shape/weak, and Buggs not putting any weight on during his redshirt year, seems like Tubby and his staff didn't put a lot of stock in being strong and well conditioned. Disappointing to see from such a high caliber coach.

DJ was listed at 200 on his NBADL profile, he's probably only 190-195. It's going to take a skinny man like Buggs to a looooooooooooong time to hit 220.

Depends how he used his body, he may be fine to play at under 200lbs, gaining 10lbs would be ideal & realistic prior to the season. And wasn't he just really sick for a while?

I'm glad you've finally seen the light, after vehemently disagreeing with me about it last season when i started the above thread.

LOL

That thread was all speculation since there hadn't been any games broadcasted on TV to that point. If you read what I actually said, you'll see that I said EE SHOULD HAVE put on some weight by that point because he was going into his third year in the program. If Tubby would have had him on a better program than he would have been bigger. I'm still high on EE and Mo as our centers the next 2 seasons. Not sure why you felt the need to link to that thread.

That is frightening. I'm guessing he's around 2-3% body fat.

15 year contract... (joking)

The Mankato crowd got a kick of that, and when Pitino said his 15-year contract would be released in the next few weeks. #Gophers

@jonny_nelson Buggs can really shoot the ball for a guy his size.

Pitino said Buggs' growth "will burst once he gets that weight on." Sounds like Buggs will likely get some decent time as a RS freshman.

Pitino mentioned again today on the tour stop in Mankato that center Mo Walker lost 20 pounds to 280. Ideal weight for him is 250.

I am under the impression that he was battling mono. That'd surely take some weight off the kid.

Perhaps he's had mono ? (1st I've heard of it though), but he's never been over 195lbs soaking wet. I understand people desperately want him to be our PF, but anyone who's seen him play will tell you that's not what he does. He's a 6'9" SF. He shoots the 3 pointer, he shoots mid-range jumpers, he dunks in transition & he blocks shots. As he said in the Strib article a couple months ago he's never played PF or with his back to the basket in his life until this past year in practice.

I think we're all learning that Tubby was one lazy SOB!!!

Concur. That's what I saw when I saw him.

He should've become a pro coach about 10 years ago, he clearly lacked the ability to communicate with and motivate the college aged player day in and day out.

To much is put on ten lbs and/or an inch in height. Can they play or not?

Corey Brewer second year in college: 6'-9" 185lbs.

- yes mono and his bio had him at 6'8" 198. If that's the case he should be back to to 195, 200lbs in no time.

Don't care what the bio says, he's never weighed 198lbs. Don't remember who but Tubby, Buggs, maybe the Strib article on him a couple months a ago (?) mentioned him at 190lbs. Agreed, that a guy can play or not but you also can't realistically start a PF who weights 190-195lbs against Nix & Payne from MSU. There's a reason Pitino's turning over every stone to find a physical 4 who can rebound. Even if Buggs gets to 215lbs this year (which he won't) he'll never be a traditional PF, it's just not what he does.

also can't realistically start a PF who weights 190-195lbs

DJ did it in real life, is that realistic enough for you?

Don't care what you say, do you follow him around with a scale? Apparently in the shower when he's dripping wet by your measurements...

Buggs may be a better 3, who knows at this point, but to say he can't play four next to austin and 7' plus EE is just stupid.
