I love the Gophers and want them to do well.....however, that was the best damn read in a long time...I hope every person that visits Gopher Hole reads it. It is dead on. We need to be realists and get behind this program and look ahead and not back. Maturi over promised on this hire no doubt, but the job is now filled so get over it already. When I heard it was Jerry Kill I was disappointed too. Then I actually took some time to do a little research on the guy and I really like this dude. Is he going to turn this program around and win the Big Ten and take the Gophs to the Rose Bowl? I don't know, nobody knows, but I am really excited about his history of turning around programs and I think the more the people of Minnesota here him speak and get to know him....a majority of "us" can relate to him. He seems like a great teacher of the game and has a sincere passion for the game. The Brewster hire was a nightmare....let's all just thank god it's over and we are moving on with a coach that really wants to be here. Kill jumped at the opportunity to come here. All these other coaches that were contacted didn't show as much interest and basically felt they were too good. I'm not saying to jump on the bandwagon and start singing the Rouser in the shower everyday, but let's sit back give coach Kill some breathing room and let him do his thing for a couple of years, we all might be suprised. Go Gophers!

Agreeed!, I was also disappointed and frustrated by the hire because of the message that we were finally going to get that big name. What I realized through all this is we can't get the big name no matter how hard the athletic dept. tries. What I like is, that Kill is a HC who I feel has proven himself to deserve a shot at the D1 level to see what he can do. I also was impressed with his presser because I didn't all this overhype that we heard from Brewster who was all talk with no action.
 

I don't think most Gopher fans think our program is 'above' Jerry Kill. The reason people are complaining is because of the bait and switch. People reasonably believe that you could attract a good coach with the fundamentals in place if you had a good AD who didn't look and sound like a hayseed and require the football coach to attend weekly staff meetings with the golf coach. Its that simple.

I didn't like the post at all. Nice use of 'raisin sac' and 'nine year old niece' in the same sentence. He's lucky I'm not his brother.
 


I feel like all the articles/comments from the media that speak to our apparent disdain for our new coach are about three days behind the story. Sure, there was the initial 'shock' and a lot of us reacted poorly. But within 24 hours I feel like, for the most part, we united in support for Kill. There's always going to dissension when discussing coaches. Look at rifts on this site for Brewster and Mason. Not to discredit the very site that I enjoy and am myself posting on, but I don't think anyone should look at a message board and draw broad conclusions on a fan base. The internet and forums such as this invariably bring out the worst in people...plus we have more than our fair share of haters and fake fans on here. All that being said, it was a well-written, interesting article.
 

For the 9 billionth time, people aren't upset with Jerry Kill. The consensus is that he's a good coach and the Gophers should be happy to have him. I agree with some of the writer's points, but...

If this came from anyone associated with the San Francisco Chronicle in a professional manner, I'll eat my hat.

I think the passionate fans left in "Gopher nation" (I hate that) are on this site. I am not sure there is anyplace else they can go to express opinions and ideas. We all want to experience the Football Gophers of 1950's -60 which most of us have never seen but only hear rumors of their existence. Also, we all want our new coach Jerry Kill to succeed. There is no doubt he is a good and sincere man who can coach and has won. This program is riddled with many good men with sincere intentions, who can coach, are good men, but have not succeeded. I would tell the masses that it takes more than a coach to build a program. I hope Coach Kill gets the commitment and support (not LIP service) from the Presidents office down to be given a real chance for true success. Many other great men and coaches have tried and are considered as failures only to be ridiculed and made scape goats for systemic problems that make it almost impossible to create a winner at the U of M.

I hope the winds of change have made clear the new realities and an environment that will give Coach Kill a fighting chance. We all crave the resurrection of the Gophers of old.
 

Great blog post--thanks for sharing this. I've been pretty appalled by the actions of some of the former football players and it is about time someone reminds some of them that for the most part, they have been an integral part of a very unsuccessful program. It's almost as if they don't think they have anything to do with what has happened in the past.
 



I don't get it. Why be reasonable when you can be negative? Why be rational when you can act like an infant and claim that you're doing it because you "will not tolerate mediocrity"?

I think it is mostly the marginal fans (those who are very prone to jumping on and off the bangdwagon) that think this way. There are also those among us who wish to appease them.

It is or responsability to remind people that we are not "giving Jerry Kill a chance". Jerry Kill is giving Minnesota a chance. And if it doesn't work out, we're the ones who lose.

Same here. I knew a little about Kill during the search and figured his name would come up in the second tier of candidates and I'll have to admit I was a bit disappointed when he was named coach. But that disappointment lasted less than half a day. The more I hear him speak, the happier I am that he got the job.

I had a "near-miss" stepson-in-law who knew Brewer and attested that he's a good guy. Although this kid didn't end up being my stepson-in-law, he was someone whose judgment I trusted (I would have even trusted him with my checkbook Dr. Don) and I'll have to admit that when he's not griping, I find Brewer to be a fairly sharp guy with some solid takes on things. But for the last few years, he's been nothing but negative and it's really hurting his credibility.

Spot on. The article supports Maturi's motto; We Are Minnesota. That is who we are and we all need to change.

Maturi should be whipped with a wet noodle or even worse for making the slightest hint that the UM can hire a Tubby for its coach. And same for many fans who bought into that dreamy thought. I bet I have posted "Big name coaches don't go to programs like Minnesota, Indiania and Colorado" a dozen times the past couple of weeks on GH.

During the search, a few of us here took a look at Coach Kill and saw the type of coach with many of the qualities needed to win at Minnesota. I am glad he is here.

Coach Kill made a statement that is very true. The Gophers are not his team. They are Minnesota's team. Not only the fans but the Administration, alumni and even the press need to give that a dose of serious thought and work together to change the culture and the way of thinking. I am excited to get President Elect Kaler on board who I am confident will bring that to the UM.

Coach Kill has a monumental task in front of him and he needs lots of help and even some good luck.

Absolutely. Well said.

Flashy? No. Major buzz? No. But I honestly don't think any of the names that were thrown around are better flat out COACHES than the one that was hired. This is a guy that has taken HS kids that were willing to go to places like So. Illinois and No. Illinois and mold them into COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYERS.

I don't think we'll be disappointed.

I think Brewer is kinda falling in love with the Microphone PA puts in front of him.

Let me say it this way, yesterday (almost literally) when Kill was first announced, I would agree with the article. Fans hopes (not necessarily expectations) were high for a big name hire that through the power of his persona would right the UofM football program and there was enough tweeterdom (see Mullen, Peterson, along with the occasional pining for Leach by some) that these hopes were occasionally fanned.

The hire then of someone who, though a winner on the levels that he coached, was nothing of any sort of name recognition, though his name does lend itself to some clever statements.

Today, after hearing his perspective and getting a sense of who he is, though a few may be disgruntled still, I do not believe the blog fairly represents the general attitude of, dare I say, Gopher Nation.

I think many are seeing Kill as a genuine man who knows what he is doing and have some confidence he can win at MN.

I will say the blog is a little bit of an eye opener concerning how we fans can come across without our realizing it.
 


He has had success and can obviously coach, they beat Minnesota soundly last year, not a blow out but it was obvious who the better team was. Lets hope that he can recruit some, in a way recruiting might be identifying a few players that fall a little under the radar but develop and a few that are going to contribute right away.

BTW, I think the referenced article should be required reading on "the hole".
(Or as Rittenberg said in one of his blog entries on "us" thinking we were in line to get Petersen - "Get Real".)

The question for all of us to ask is: Jerry Kill...what can I do to help you win football games?

It is sad that some of the local media turn to Jack Brewer to be an expert on the Gopher program. He offers up some ridiculous takes. I wish they would let some callers go at him when he is on the radio at times.

I know Jack played here and is loyal to Glen Mason. However, you do not follow college football closely if you did not know who Jerry Kill was.

i can say this about Jack, at least he is not Adam Kelly.

Not long ago Jack said he wanted to return to the dominant defenses of Coach Mason. Jack is delusional.
