Franklin Fired

Seeing Cignetti and Rhule get brought up makes me wonder how many times a coach has gone to another school directly in the same conference. Happened a couple times in the SEC. Tommy Tubberville went from Ole Miss to Auburn, and Houston Nutt went from Arkansas to Ole Miss. Plus in basketball there's John Calipari.

Most of the time though there's a gap in between. Bret Bielema had Arkansas between Wisconsin and Illinois. Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier had NFL gigs between LSU-Alabama and Florida-South Carolina, respectively.

Sometimes a change is good for both parties. They should’ve given him until the end of the year ImO out of respect for his work but maybe he didn’t want that

I always wonder how big ten history is different if we don’t blow that lead against Penn state when they had Barkley. It’s his only big ten title. At the time they were 2-2. Franklin was 16-14 at Penn state.
Had they lost it would’ve been October first and penn state would’ve been essentially out of the title race at 0-2 with a loss to Pitt as well.
Following that game they won 21 of their next 26 conference games. They may have lost their patience and not given him that chance had we held them off

Cignetti??
I'm told he's a fraud benefitting from "favorable scheduling."
He has for sure. He's also a good coach. I would love to see how he works out at PSU. Could be interesting to watch.

I'd for sure hire Cignetti over Rhule, although age could be a factor.

I remember how impressed I was with Franklin when he was at Vanderbilt - I was living in Atlanta for a few years then. What a terrible end to his career - if it is an end - I can see him coaching elsewhere.

And Chip Kelly had two NFL jobs between Oregon and UCLA.

If he wants to stay in the big ten Wisconsin will be opening up after McIntosh and Luke are fired. Maybe he goes to the SEC.

Steve Sarkisian went from Washington directly to USC in the old Pac-12 in 2014. Of course, that ended very poorly and quickly.

Tom Obrien was HC at Boston College for several years in the Big East, and then a couple years after they moved to the ACC he left directly for NC State in 2007. That one maybe somewhat borderline?

He's been on thin ice for a while now. PSU fans think of themselves as on the level of tOSU, Alabama, Georgia etc.
Whether they are, or should be, or could be, that's what a large and rabid fan base expect.
Losing to stumbling UCLA and NW at home was simply too much to tolerate.
Well, they used to be. Hard to believe this is true at a level, but in our sports-crazed win-at-all-costs and ignoring any sense of decemcy it's par for the course.

For the record, I thought Franklin was a decent coach although I found him a bit over-the-top at times.
