FootballScoop: Maturi to speak with Navy HC Ken Niumatololo

I'd love to see the Gophers run the triple option. I know it's tough when you get down but from my previous experience, it's a pretty tough offense to prepare and play against. We may not be the most fun to watch but that's fine with me.

On a side note, I'd like to see us run any other offense that Wisconsin doesn't run. I hate trying to "pound the ball like Wisconsin."

It gives us something to do. It's either this or take part in that thread where that guy was yelling about the cheerleaders.

This is a classic.

Everyone is angry - did you hear them "Boo" the Cub Food Challenge guy last week? Poor guy, he just sucked at football.

What sucks is we still have at minimum a month until they hire someone. Until then it's going to be constant griping about cheerleaders or the band or how we shouldn't have fired Brewster until the end of the season. Still, there's nothing much else to talk about unless someone over looks us and gives us the game. I doubt that very much.

According to another post, Maturi does not need permission to talk to a coach. If the search firm tells a coach that they are interested, he can then approach the Gophers on his own to say he would like to be considered for the job. In other words, the Gophers can flirt across the room and then the coach can come over and ask for a dance. However, the Gophers cannot initiate the process without getting permission. Any way, that's what I was told on another thread.

Problem is: like Sumlin and some others - only three and a half years as a head coach. Big risk. Seems like an admirable guy, though, and Paul Johnson was his mentor. But I'd rather have Paul Johnson.

I like Coach Ken, and I wouldn't be upset if he was our next pick, but I also have issues with almost all of his experience being at a Military Academy. I realize that it is hard to get the blue chip kind of kids to play for you but the kind of players that they do get fit a very different mold than the average student athlete. I don't think Coach Ken has had to deal with an enormous amount of off the field incidents, poor school work, behavioral problems, and recruiting is a completely different animal.

I think Coach Ken is a very good coach, and part of me would be happy to have him as our next coach. But I would have some questions about his ability to handle a traditional big time university.

sticky?

How long before his Mormonism gets mentioned? Well, I guess I mentioned it. Always a sticky subject outside of Utah.

I don't think I have ever asked or thought about what a coach's religion was.

Who cares?

I want to declare a Jihad on Iowa.

Joel is not contacting anybody at this stage

The search firm is. By the time Maturi actually speaks to any candidates, the list will be winnowed down to fewer than 10 who actually are open to listening.

If you do your history you'll notice an Atheist has never won a National Championship in College Basketball or Football...

That is proof enough for me that God exists...

:D

That is a good one. That may be hard to prove!

doesn't exactly fill the bill of Name coach with national credibility

I think we all need to admit picking a new coach is such a crapshoot...we could pick someone like Belotti or Fulmer who has had success previously or go after a Golden or Sumlin who is a up and comer...or a proven assistant coach...there are so many variables to what kind of success they will have...that being said I would love if the Gophers took a chance on a guy like Leach, he's built a program before and I think he can do it here.

I actually like this guy. I think he has done wonderful things at a military school. Who knows what he can do at a Big 10 University. I understand that we are not really in the position to take risks, but each candidate is a risk (one more than another).

As far as the Mormon connection goes, that can help us. I really don't think it matters all that much, but many Mormon candidates are top tier players. Lets not forget Manti Teo' at Notre Dame he is LDS and had his choice between BYU and Notre Dame.

Once again I don't think that will matter much though.

After the first hangup. Call back and state you have a revised offer and we are serious. After that hangup. Call back the next day and leave a message. Yes, we hit bottom. We are a serious football administration and we want our new home full every game. We have every intention of drawing 80,000 fans a game. We want people to feel they can bring their RV's to our football weekends and be part of the campus. We want you to understand that we want a competitive football team. You won't be building this on your own. Win games and your compensation goes up and we will fund better total compensation for your staff. We are lining up sponsors for you right now and we will deliver more compensation through these sources. Of course this is all about those football athletes and their education. But, winning is what we want just as much.

Shoiw real interest by not giving up. Earn their respect from the sweat equity you put into the recuriting effort.

I personally think we should go with a Jainist. We'd have to score at least 80+ points a game though, as tackling the opposing players would be against our coach's religion.

And it isn't now? :D

Maybe that's what Cosgrove converted to during the Off-Season. IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!

I didn't think this board was capable of producing a joke this intellectual.

Alley-oop to RodentRampage for the slam dunk.
