"University of Minnesota: We did not see this one coming, but multiple sources have told FootballScoop that Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi intends to speak with Navy head coach Ken Niumatololo."

Go Gophers!!

It would be sweet if he came in and installed the Air Raid offense, just to totally throw eveyone off.

At this point it may be safer just to start listing candidates we are not going to be connected with during this search.

How long before his Mormonism gets mentioned? Well, I guess I mentioned it. Always a sticky subject outside of Utah.

It shouldn't matter. One superstition is as good as another.

Not a big deal. You just need to work a clause into his contract that each of his wives gets a courtesy vehicle. And on the plus side, you don't have to worry about our football coach pulling a Gary Moeller and getting arrested for public intoxication.

My guess (hope?) is that Maturi will be informally reaching out to as few as 15 and as many as 35 coaches to dtermine whether they have any interest or not. Then he will be talking to the 10-15 coaches that have some interest. We will probably hear some, but definately not all, of the names on Joel's outreach list.

I don't put much stock in the connection argument.

Wacker was supposed to have a connection to Texas.

True. Wacker did have a connection to Texas. We got all the Sun Belt caliber players that UT & TAMU didn't want.

But you look at most west coast (e.g. PAC10 teams), and they have at least one lineman who looks like Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons. Except they weigh 300 lbs. And there's a lot to be said for a strain of the human genome where the males are predisposed to have that sort of build. As opposed to a kid who just happened to eat way too many Doritos in grade school.

It shouldn't matter. One superstition is as good as another.

False. Panthesim crushes all other superstitions. I'd hire Baruch Spinoza as our coach tomorrow. Crazy little Portuguese bastard. He'd convince Gary Tinsley that he really was god.

I care about his mormonism as much as i'd care about Richt being an evangelical or HArbaugh being catholic, which is to say that as long as it doesn't have a whole lot to do with his job, i'm cool with it.

I'd be fine with an atheist/muslim/jewish (not including Trestman) coach as well.

Why do so many people tend to believe these stories. None of them are credible in the slightest.

Meister Eckhardt can run the offense.

I hope not up to 35, Joel should have some idea of the type of coach he wants.

What? We are not to believe any of these rumors??? :D Screw it, I am gonna drink beer 24/7 till the truth comes out.

I don't think Joel has any idea what kind of coach he wants...he did hire Brewster...remember...I think Joel is going to hire the guy that he is told to hire by the people with money...pray it aint Trestman!

These are the right kind of guys to be looking at. Joel is barking up the right tree!

This. Maturi isn't speaking to the guy yet, the search firm would be. Maturi would need permission which you'd hear about in the press. Just another rumor for the pile.

It gives us something to do. It's either this or take part in that thread where that guy was yelling about the cheerleaders.

My thinking is that the max depends on how many of the 1st 15 or 20 say, "I have zero interest."

I think Maturi and the search firm should get down to a dozen or so semi-finalists for the search firm to talk with and, from that, 3 to 5 finalists for sit-down face-to-face meetings with Joel and whoever else has a vote.

We went the FCA route with Wacker and Brewster and they didn't work out. Though any criticism of who they may or may not have recruited stayed miles away from mentioning the point.
