Fleck Spring practice presser

Pretty smooth way to handle this...

——

HOW MUCH OF A COMPETITION IS IT GOING TO BE BETWEEN ZACK ANNEXSTAD AND TANNER MORGAN?

Fleck: First of all, I think Tanner Morgan's earned the first team reps. Period. In terms of the spring.

I think if you ask Tanner, if you ask Zach, you ask Cole, if you ask Jacob, they all want an opportunity, and everybody's going to get an opportunity. I think that that's what this program is about.

But I think when you look at what Tanner has done, at the body of work over a period of time, what he's done for this institution, what he's done with the football program, what he does in a leadership role that he has, he's earned the first team reps in the spring.

And I think if if you ask Tanner Morgan as humble of a kid he is, are you the starter? He's going to say I gotta go earn it. And I wouldn't have it any other way. But it's going to be a very competitive spring and we want it to be that way because the great thing about it is, I know what they can do.

But now we have an offensive coordinator who gets to coach them and teach them for the first time, and gets to see their strengths and gets to see their abilities to be able to grow on. And I think that's really critical for our spring is to get Coach Sanford familiar with all of them. He's been able to work here and there on some techniques and fundamentals, but to really dive into the quarterback position in terms of playing the game. I'm really excited about that.
Translation...hell yeah Tanner is the starter! But I have to at least tell the others there is a chance, plus there is the old one play away from injury but (knock on wood) so at least be ready boys!

Fleck's comment was probably about as close as he will ever come to saying someone has a job locked up.

That said, competition is a good thing, and if one of the other guys can truly beat Morgan out then we will probably be looking at a really really special season.

Or the season is a train wreck.

Or the season is a train wreck.

Note that I said beat him out, meaning out perform him to a point where a guy who had one of the greatest seasons in Gopher history for a QB is relegated to backup duty because the guy behind him was that much better.

Hard to believe the season would be a trainwreck in that scenario.

So, basically, one of the guys behind him would have to be Aaron Rodgers, Tua, or something along those lines, to beat out a consensus top 5-10 QB in the country. We don’t have that guy on our roster. This isn’t Alabama.

Bob’s mention of Mafe’s 6’7” high jump got me curious, so I looked up his track and field bio. These are the events he competed in at some stage of his high school career.

100M
200M
110M hurdles
Shot put
High jump
Triple jump
4x100 relay
4x200 relay
4x110 hurdles

His best event was high jump, where he placed 6th at the state meet with a jump of 6’4” (the winner jumped 6’8”). Mafe’ PR is 6’7”. That’s ridiculous for his size. I don’t think something close to 40” vertical is too outlandish, but I’ll concede there’s a possibility it could have been embellished a little. If he can put it all together over the next two years (or one year, honestly), NFL scouts will be drooling over that frame and athleticism.

He's a beast.

From Danielle Hunter’s Wikipedia page....

Danielle was also a high jumper, but not nearly as good as Boye.

In track & field, Hunter competed in both sprinting and jumping events. Checking in at 6'6", 225-pounds, In track & field, Hunter competed in both sprinting and jumping events. Barring catastrophic injury/unexpected poor play, Tanner is the starter the next two seasons.

Any of the three other scholarship QBs that can't deal with that, need to transfer out after spring.

Yep...would seem highly unlikely that one of the backups will be able to out play Tanner at this point.

To be fair though, no one would have thought that Morgan was a Top 5-10 QB in the country last year at this time either.

(I am not saying anyone will beat him out just saying things can change)
