Fleck on Annexstad: “probably a week away from actually being 100 percent”

I’m typically up for reading any thread, but had to stop this one within the first 10 posts
It's that easy to make you give up?? I think not

Taysom Hill is a wildcat QB. He also plays wide receiver and running back. I don’t think it is a silly question at all to ask if with better scheme and play calling Seth Green could be
college football’s copy cat. Seth Green has been amazing in his role! Incredibly dependable and effective. He was utilized way more last year than this year.

Given more opportunities, utilizing him in better situations he could be much more of a game changing weapon. Diversifying his role, adding passes he throws, screens he catches it’s not hard to see him terrorizing opponents like Taysom Hill. Few DB’s are tackling Seth one on one with a head of steam, add some blockers, good luck.

So ya, KC absolutely did not utilize Seth up to his maximum capabilities in an effort to give defenses nightmares. Matt Simon was a significant improvement in this area.
Watch out, you might get 73 posts of people jumping down your throat, since you put this out there.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I think some of this had to do with the emergence of Tanner Morgan. I kind of like keeping a personnel in the game, even on short yardage plays, where Morgan, Bateman and Johnson are in the game. Dare the other team to completely sell out on the run.

That said, you do have a good point. I'd like to see us add a couple more wrinkles with Seth, especially early in the year. I want Seth throwing the ball to be in the back of everyone's mind.
I have no idea if this could be a thing -- but if Seth could compete for the #3 or #4 WR spots reasonably well, then when we go 11 or 10 personnel he (Seth) could be on the field anyway. Would be nice having a big, tall, athletic receiver out there. Similar to how the Saints used Jared Cook at times against the Vikings (and the rest of the league).

Ah jeez, there I go again with the Saints. *ducks for cover*

They tried that earlier in the year. Remember the missed blocks? If he was our 3rd or 4th best WR, I’d go along with it, but he’s not.

That's just fine. Absolutely have to block, if you want to be a starting/major contributing receiver.

Annexstad was an unrecruited walk-on as I recall, but competed about evenly with Morgan. That means he has talent... Kinda like Adam Thielen was unrecruited but now a top NFL receiver.

So I hope he hangs around, at the least he'd give us a capable backup QB.

Had offers from Illinois, Pitt, Cincinnati, southern Mississippi, and western Kentucky per 247. Definitely not unrecruited.

Agree with the rest. Hope he sticks around and keeps competing. awesome to have kids that bleed maroon and gold.

I think it will be interesting to see how much closer the 2 frosh are now to Zach compared to where they were in spring and start of fall. I'd venture to say the gap may have narrowed considerably.
If they don't get closer to both TM and ZA, I will be a little worried. The gap was pretty wide last Fall, especially for Kramer.

My thought is ZA will work hard (maybe harder) like when he first got here. He knows the playbook as well as TM. He came into this year clearly having hit the gym hard...he was visibly bigger in his upper body. To the extent that he can, he will put a lot of effort this off season onto becoming more durable.

I expect ZA to look very good come Spring.

But yet you kept on reading them and posted....hmmmm

The gap we are both talking about had everything to do with the freshmen’s lack of experience with the offense compared to ZA and TM.
The 2021 QB will be miles behind the other 4 when he arrives.

Don't disagree, but ZA clearly knew the offense well going into his freshman year. When I compare those two at the same point to ZA, it is not even close.

Do you think ZA and TM might have been working with a condensed version of the offense that first year? I’m confident they did. That’s how it works. You don’t/can’t throw that much at new guys in their first year. Clemson did the same with their Freshman QB last year.

If so, the same would apply to Clark and Kramer, thus my comparison point.

The starting QB job could very well be open for 2021. If Morgan has another season of sound decisions and pinpoint throws, he'll be a mid-round draft prospect with nothing more to prove. He won't get any taller or quicker, so I don't know what he could do to make an NFL team value him any higher after a fourth season.

That leaves two seasons for ZA and three for Clark and Kramer. Another reason not to transfer out.

That makes zero sense. Clark and Kramer wouldn’t learn a water downed version along with TM and ZA leaning an advanced offense. There was zero QB experience that year. They had to water it down early.
Last Spring would have been sink or swim for the freshmen. They both sank. As expected.

Jesus Christ. When you have no other options. Seriously, you’re not this dense, right?

Can't argue both ways. When you go that right a junior high personal jab, I can only think I hit a nerve with you.

It's not dense to think that freshman QBs get spoon fed the play book. I was at every open and a few closed practices and the gap was large.

Forgive me, man. I didn’t realize I had to break it down to the simplest of terms. I assumed you had some working knowledge of football beyond the typical fan. You seem to usually have some good insight.

Aren't you clever...

I’m sure it was a wide gap. Why wouldn’t it be? You have 2 guys who were in the system and learned the foundation an entire year before the Frosh. That’s entirely to be expected. Ask coaches you know where a player tends to have their biggest growth and they’ll most likely tell you going into their 2nd year.
That’s why I said I think the gap will be narrowed.

I do read them which is why I was explaining why the gap between the groups and to also help you understand the offense ZA knew in the 2018 Spring Game wasn’t the same offense ZA knew in the 2019 Spring Game. For obvious reasons, there will be some newness to the 2020 Spring Game offense too.

You don't need to help me understand anything here, but thanks none the less.

ZA did enroll early, but didn't at least Clark too? Can't recall

Well you could make the argument that ZA really had little competition in front of him during his first (early) spring. So for all I know, he could've split the reps evenly all spring with Morgan and VV. More reps tends to help develop faster.

Kramer and Clark possibly may not have had the same benefit in their first (early) spring, with ZA and Morgan in front of them and maybe needing to get more of the reps. Plus you could say those two essentially split the reps that would've gone solely to the #3 QB, in half. Even less reps.

ZA was even with TM in Spring his freshman year. TM had been in the system for a year.

I believe it was first spring too, though. Usually a true fresh QB comes in and doesn't get to learn much outside of fall camp. They run the scout team in the fall and don't travel.

I could be completely wrong on that though. Maybe Morgan was the emergency backup to Rhoda and Croft and traveled?

Competition at QB can only be a good thing. Annexstad was a pretty darned good true freshman QB. And even if Annexstad doesn't unseat Morgan, he should have three years of eligibility left, which puts him in a great position for the future.
Competition and collaboration. I agree that Zack will likely get some playing time next season for whatever reason(s).
