Fleck about the No. 1 thing he hears from fans while at the Minnesota State Fair: “Beat Iowa” … “and why haven’t you?”

For the same reason people back in the day, and to a lesser extend nowadays, got so fired up about beating the school two miles to the east of them, etc. It's all provincialism, dates back to the time of city states. As a fan since the fifties you should understand! Isn't the tune "Stay True to your School?"
There's a Beach Boys' song "Be True to Your School." Is that the one to which you refer? Good song. And a good sentiment. But being true to my school doesn't imply that I must hate my neighbor schools. Wisconsin and Iowa both recruit well in Minnesota and I like to see MN kids doing well. So in games involving those schools, I root for them unless they're playing the Gophers. I guess I like football for the strategies and tactics more than as a proxy. But on the proxy component, I like my school to be represented by good citizens, good students, and athletes who play well together. That seems to be the case with the Gophers lately.

Listen, I still have bad feelings about the beat down Gophs got in the Hump from Iowa. They stormed the field and dismantled the goal post. I will never, ever forget or forgive them for that. Who hates Iowa?
We hate Iowa!!!
