Fleck about the No. 1 thing he hears from fans while at the Minnesota State Fair: “Beat Iowa” … “and why haven’t you?”

He can't beat Iowa which, to me, is more important than beating Wisconsin and not beating Iowa and Wisconsin, in the same year, means a bad season for the Gophers
My opinion obviously but there is nothing more important than beating wisky. Ever. In every sport, everytime, by as much as possible. And feel free to troll wisky afterwards too.

Beating Iowa or Wisconsin is close for me but do agree I get even more fired up to beat Wisconsin. Why do we feel that way?

He can't beat Iowa, because every once in a while, you play a team for a stretch where you literally can't get out of your own way.

Except he can beat Iowa, he just hasn’t quite yet. Also 2019 was far from a bad season despite losing to both teams.

Listen, I still have bad feelings about the beat down Gophs got in the Hump from Iowa. They stormed the field and dismantled the goal post. I will never, ever forget or forgive them for that. Who hates Iowa?

Speaking of Badgers, the Billds have just finished a two week vacation stint in Florida and I had the chance to purchase a badger skull among about 100 other varieties of animals earlier today. Came close but just knowing Bucky now at least gets his ass kicked every now and then was more rewarding than shelling out the $85 asking price.

Carry on and let's beat I-O-W-A in Iowa City for the first time since 1999.

I suppose this is personal for a lot of people.

as much as I appreciate the Axe, I just think Floyd is the best trophy that the Gophers play for.

so if I had to choose, I would choose Floyd over the Axe.

(if they beat Michigan a little more often, I might say the Jug, but it's been a one-sided series, and the two teams have only met twice in the last 7 seasons.)

All it takes to value the Axe over Floyd is to take in a game in Madtown and IC. No comparison how Gopher fans are treated and its not even close. Been to both stadiums 4-5 times and its always the same.

I hate to admit it but when the Hogeyes and Becky play I always hope Becky losses.

It really is amazing what you can get in Florida!

I wish I was there. A proud moment the second that jump around started. I watch that video on YouTube at least once every couple months. Watched it 2 days ago again.

Lois always seems to be a mitigating factor to me . Lol

Why are we chasing to beat Iowa or Wisconsin? It's time to beat both of them regularly.

Why are we chasing to beat Iowa or Wisconsin? It's time to beat both of them regularly.
We used to beat both regularly, many moons ago. In the 1960s, we beat Iowa 8 times (5 in Iowa City), and beat both Iowa and Wisconsin 4 times. In the 1970s, we beat Iowa 7 times (4 in Iowa City), and beat both Iowa and Wisconsin 4 times. In the 1980s, we beat Iowa 4 times (twice in Iowa City), and beat both Iowa and Wisconsin 2 times. In the 1990s, we beat Iowa 4 times (once, 1999, in Iowa City) and beat both Iowa and Wisconsin 2 times. Then the 20th Century ended.

The 21st Century has started off kind of lame against our two key rivals. In the 2000 decade, we beat Iowa 2 times (zero in Iowa City), but never beat both Iowa and Wisconsin. In the 2010 decade, we beat Iowa 3 times (zero in Iowa City), but never beat both Iowa and Wisconsin. In the 2020s so far, we have not beaten Iowa.

Last win against Iowa was in 2014; last win in Iowa City was in 1999.

Time for the Gophers to reclaim their past dominance over Iowa and Wisconsin! This is the year to beat them both. Go Gophers.

Holy crap. Time flies. I was still in school then and remember that ass-kicking. Apparently we sold our soul to Iowa to get wins against WI now.

We used to beat both regularly, many moons ago.

The Gophers also used to beat good Iowa teams. During the Hayden Fry era, Minnesota beat 2 of Iowa’s Rose Bowl teams (1981 and 1990) and another team (1984) that finished the year ranked. And of course the Gophers beat # 1 Iowa in 1960, likely the biggest Minnesota victory since WW2. But during the Ferentz era (6-18), the Gophers have yet to beat a single good Iowa team, beating Ferentz’s first two poor teams (1999-2000), and only four other mediocre Iowa teams that finished the year unranked (2006, Iowa 6-7; 2010, Iowa 8-5; 2011, Iowa 7-6; and 2014, Iowa 7-6). Conversely, Iowa has beaten the last five 9+ victory Gopher squads (2003, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2022).

If Iowa turns out to be good this year, and PJ gets the monkey off his back with a victory in Iowa City, that would be a huge flip-the-script victory.

I don't know why some feel that way. I rather like Wisc and Iowa programs. Sure I like the Gophers to beat them, but I like the Gophers to beat everyone they play. I never understood the big deal about rivalries.

For the same reason people back in the day, and to a lesser extend nowadays, got so fired up about beating the school two miles to the east of them, etc. It's all provincialism, dates back to the time of city states. As a fan since the fifties you should understand! Isn't the tune "Stay True to your School?"

Well, I do think sports rivalries are a big deal.
I coached at a private school that was between conferences...that sucked. There were no rivalries.
Not as much fun to play anonymous or non historical opponents.
So when you are in a conference and you have historical experiences you develop "rivalries".
Teams you want to beat because maybe somebody like Davidson was a puke in basketball....the games are you usually close. The crowds are fired up and intense...so it's fun. You develop reasons you wanna win because of pride in your school doing things the right way versus your cheatin', stupid opponent. You want to dominate or get pay back for losing last year.
Rivalries are a great thing! The games have more meaning.
Like you, I want the Gophers to beat everybody. But, if we only win four games this year I'd prefer it to be Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska.
I'm just not sure why I find Wisconsin more annoying than Iowa.

Rivalries can grow out of friendly play as well. Whenever I play sports against someone I know, I always play a bit harder because I know them and they know me. Even though we're usually friends, in that moment I'm more motivated to beat them than I am the person standing next to them on their team.

I think its rooted in familiarity.
