It's officially time. What will be done eventually should be done immediately. The chances of making the NCAA's this year is officially zero. Let the remaining fans know you care and are paying attention. Give the players something to re-group around. And most importantly get a jump on the search for a new coach.

Who would be interim?

Watching this team stand around looking timid and confused, for the last 43 game seconds, said all anyone should need to know about the coaching.

It's a merciful firing at this point.

He might decline. He's close to Ben and he may not want to suffer through any more of this.
Is it possible that they give someone from the outside who can teach the game a chance as interim? The performance we see is reflective of the whole staff. Is there a veteran coach out there who is on the sidelines?

Maybe. I doubt it and I don't think Ben would want him to. I don't see this as an acrimonious firing. Everyone can see it coming.

Goddamn it, I just want this team to be good.

Good players, poor execution, poor game plan. Ben is an adequate recruiter, and a good guy, but this is agonizingly frustrating. Betts not playing hardly at all is my biggest pet peeve.
We started solid in this game, then IU adjusted and we didn't for the rest of the game. When we got 19 wins last year and won an NIT game, I thought Ben was a pretty good coach with too small of a rotation. Now this year is a completely different story. I think I speak for all of us when I say that we're tired of inadequacy.

Run off the court in back to back games. Not even competitive. Has not had one year better than Pitino's last year, has not beaten a top 25 team, 24-58 record against Q1-Q3 teams, 25% winning percentage in B1G play, attendance at an all time low, terrible in-game decision making, doesn't get the best out of his talent. Did I miss anything?

He seems like a good guy. No, he's not an adequate recruiter or anywhere close to a competent division 1 head coach.

Watched the last few minutes n this team looks like dead men walking.

Fire Ben. Have a lottery before every home game to see which season ticket holder gets to coach. Do the same thing with away games but with opposing fans. You won't be able to see any difference.

I mean, I'm speaking from the players he has brought in via the transfer portal and what he's done with them. Peyton Willis, Dawson, Hawkins, Mike Mitchell. Every one of those except Dawson was highly sought after. And he did will to make their games better. Obviously hawkins to Money Tech sucked. Getting Asuma to come here was also a nice get. And Christie.
Next years recruiting class, if they stay assuming he's gone, looks pretty good. But it's become clear he cannot coach this team. I liked this team's construct with the depth and experience. But it needs a new voice. To quote Carl Johnson from GTA San Andreas

Three of his four teams are historically bad in the history of Gopher basketball. The other "good" team was several wins away from making the NCAA tournament. He's the worst coach in Gopher basketball history and I don't think it's particularly close. Sure the new NIL era is rough. But our situation is not unique.

"Sure I'd listen if Coyle called."

I would at least find 5 guys who didn't get beat back down the floor every other missed shot.
What's your current buyout and will they accept White Castle gift cards?

If there is any chance Coyle would make any move midseason, it should be now, as on a break a bit, then two non conference games 21 and 29th with time before big ten season starts back after the new year with Purdue coming into the barn. My question is thinking of who would be interim coach? Would John Beilein maybe be interested??

In addition to the myriad issues above, it’s so abundantly clear that Ben has no coherent system or scheme that he wants to run. There is no plan. Instead, he recruits the “best” players who are willing to come here, and then throws them out on the floor. Makes for undisciplined teams that are painful to watch.

I really hope whoever we hire next has a coaching identity who knows what types of players he wants. Fleck has done this in football, and program continuity with acceptable results and healthy NIL has followed. There is truly no reason men’s bball can’t obtain that level of success.

My question is, does Coyle know how to identify and hire those skill sets in basketball? I’m highly doubtful he does.

So, I think there is your answer...AFTER his fourth season his buyout is 50% of the remaining base salary. I am guessing nothing happens until that point.

I'm glad you finally posted this. You should post it one more time just in case Coyle missed it.
