***Exhibition Gameday Thread - New Look Gophers VS Concordia St.Paul****

Take your shit to the OTB. State owned buildings require masks indoors. This has absolutely ZERO to do with the athletic department.
State owned buildings?

Perhaps this has nothing to do with the athletic department and more to do with our woke University. That might be more correct. Either way, it's ridiculous. Masks do nothing and people are done with this nonsense.

Responding as you did, isn't going to change my opinion or stop me from voicing it where and when I please.

"Masks do nothing and people are done with this nonsense". I think I've heard this before... Anyhow, I wonder what the plan is for seating/masking when the actual games begin. I could care less either way but I'm sure some people will stay away if masks are required (and vice versa).

Mask debate aside. Games have been going on at Mariucci for weeks and my wife tells me, as does the broadcast, that most people are not wearing their masks.

Jamison battle looked like what I had dreamt that Alihan Demir would look like before seeing him play
I like Battle's game. He looks like the guy we will need to lean on for scoring.

My thoughts are the following (I don't have a box score, so going off of gut feel).

The Good

Ball Movement
- It was refreshing to retire the Carr ball era and see the rock move around until an open shot was available.

Shooting - We shot a lot of 3s and made a lot. I think we were around 38% which is about 10% higher than last year's average. We will live and die by the 3 this year. It could keep us in some games if Willis and Battle are feeling it.

Willis/Battle - They are BIG players. Easily the best two players on the court, and it wasn't even close.

Sutherlin/Loewe - Tough kids that I think will hold their own. Sutherlin could easily get to the hoop and finish, and Loewe played good defense and hit some open 3s. EJ Stephens may have the highest upside after Willis/Battle but seemed a little out of sorts tonight.

Turnover Margin - Turned them over 20+ times, although many were unforced. I think we had about 12 turnovers.

The Bad

3-pt Defense
- It felt like we were watching a Pitino squad's opponent torching us beyond the arc. Concordia was heaving up horrible shots, but it felt like everything was falling. I think the upside of this team is buttoning up this deficiency. It doesn't take talent (although footspeed, in general, is likely below average).

Rebounding - We may have been outrebounded by a D2 team...That's a problem.

Post Production in General - Eric Curry is last year's version of Eric Curry. Although I felt he got much better as the game went on. There is nobody behind him. I didn't notice Daniels do anything, and I think Ogeele (sp) played sparingly.

Thiam/Thompson - Very raw. They will be nice pieces, but this year's contributions will be limited, which is probably okay. Thiam was launching 3s. I think he was 0-5. He made some bad turnovers. He was very athletic and active. Didn't really notice Thompson. He had a nice putback, but that's really all I saw. I don't think he played in the second half (or not much).

Bunnies - Missed a ton of easy shots which has been par for the course over the last few years (Curry the main culprit).
Spot on

So, are we at least good to go to beat Kansas City, Fort Wayne, Jacksonville, and Corpus Christi?

Maybe Western Kentucky?

Glad they won, was definitely a little worried before the game. Battle and Willis look like Big Ten level players, the rest of the team not so much, though Curry, Stephens, and Sutherlin were solid.

Can Johns transfer today? He was definitely better than any Gopher big outside of Curry

That they do nothing is inaccurate. Whether they should be enforced at games is debatable, but it is not a big deal. If you have a sincere issue with masks, just don't come to the games then man.

Great analysis. One small disagreement, I'm pretty impressed with Thiam. He is raw and kind of wild out there, but he really looked fast and active. I think it's easier to refocus that kind of energy/effort than it is to create it. He will do some things that drive us (and his coaches) nuts this year, but it's a good year to work through those growing pains.

As for Thompson, I wish we would see a bit more run from him. I don't think he played much in the second half either.

I may have missed it, but was Ramberg injured? He is going to be this year's Mutaf for me, I'm going to complain whenever he doesn't get in.

Speaking of Mutaf, it would have been fun watching him play on this team.

Enjoyed being back but really hated the obnoxious PA guy!!!!!!

So you're telling me we couldn't get one big to transfer here this offseason?

(Haven't really been following the program since the Pitino firing -- not that I disagreed with it or anything, just seems like this year will be a blip)

Edit: Seems like we got someone named Daniels, why didn't he play?

Did Curry play the whole second half? I am confused who is playing in our front court. Can someone break down the minutes.

No real surprise there. I am hoping Thompson will develop in time. He’s about the only guy with some upside of our alleged big men.

I like Thompson, I hope they build his strength without bulking him up, his mobility at his size is his biggest asset but he needs to get stronger.

I mentioned he looked athletic and active. I saw what you were seeing! I guess my "bad" sentiment was more for how those guys will contribute this year. It's going to be a steep learning curve come conference play... I think both Thompson and Thiam look the part and will be good pieces down the road. However, expectations should be reserved short term.

Thiam won't see the court once the Big Ten season starts, ton of talent but a huge liability at this point, hopefully he will develop and maybe contribute towards the end of the season.

Aside from concordia hitting their shots the 2nd half, that we couldnt play tight enough D to force bad shots in the 2nd against a bad whatever conference team, is worrying.

the 1st D1 game will go a long ways towards how the season will go. I was worried from the start that some of our players might be too slow at the B1G level for their defensive success to transfer over. We’ll see. Hoping for the best. Lets go Gophers!

Dude just by a soda and sip on it the whole game. No one will call you out. No need to be all defiant about it. You sound like a child. It's a public health policy. People aren't trying to ruin your good time.
Popcorn works equally well if you want to avoid the 17 y.o. usher from ordering your muzzle back on (or you could just defy them).

Not everyone cares about the mini-dictators running around these days.
