Ex-Gophers Coach Jerry Kill Says He's Still Searching For His Next Job In Football

The last minute or so adds some sunshine to the situation. Sounds like Kaler doesn't want him around in any full-time capacity. Now is that Kaler or Claeyes wishes via Kaler? Or, sounds like Jerry had to step on some toes at the U to get the facilities moving and Kaler is appeasing those folks. Reading between the lines Kill is pretty damn hurt and disappointed. He was a bit at a loss for the right diplomatic words for a few seconds.

The Jerrysota ship has sailed. Thanks and moving on.

I don't quite understand the hostility to former coaches around here, especially ones that weren't fired, and/or pulled the program's flailing carcass out of the abyss.

Claeyes is a big boy, literally and figuratively and seems very assertive. Maybe Kill could influence the younger coaches but Claeys is going to Claeys. I for one think Jerry had and still could have a positive influence around the program, if (when?) the current bigwigs go on their way.

Right with ya. I really liked Jerry, but am getting pretty sick of him still being around and angling for a job here. He left, now he needs to leave. Don't go away mad, just go away.

The attitudes of GopherRob and Spoofin fit perfectly with a perennial losing program like Minnesota. The fact that you feel it necessary to make those comments show that you really just don't get it. The fact that you can't welcome a guy like coach Kill back graciously is laughable. How does it hurt you or the program to have Coach Kill stop by periodically? Here's the answer for you, it can only help. I respect President Kalers decision, and I think Jerry Kill does too. He may not agree with it, but he would never do anything to hurt the program, the University, or the state. There's not even a sniff of an athletes village without Jerry Kill. Winners gonna win, losers gonna lose.

There isn't really any anger about Kill, just the impression that he doesn't really know what he wants and the program is now Claeys and it is not fair to have a former coach nosing around handcuffing the new coach.

I suppose in theory this could happen, but I think it's a boogeyman. Personally I think there are behind the scenes politics (at the dept) that have a lot more to do with this than the "interfering with Claeyes" narrative. Since we probably won't ever know the real story here we can all agree to disagree, which is business as usual.

Claeys has repeatedly said this is Kill's program and welcome anytime. Claeys is making it his own with new OC/QB/OL coaches. I agree, why are we trying to push a positive promoter of the school and program away?

I think it is best if he lets time pass by and continue the healing process taking care of his health. He looks pretty darn good and fit with color on his face.

But, I certainly would like to see him back in a capacity like Dan O'Brien's. He is an asset to the University and the BOR and others will welcome him back with open arms I am pretty sure.

He is an asset to the University for all that he's done to right the football program and get the Athletic Viollage started.

working in administration

I got the felling that Jerry wanted everyone to just leave him alone and let him run the program. I'm really not sure he would like an administrative job... you're not emperor of your own little kingdom in that kind of job like you can be as a head coach ...

As for assistant coach those guys work as much as head coaches do, that was part of the problem...

I think being around football and many of the kids he recruited, knows and loves, is part of his therapy.

I agree 100%

Yes, Yes. We all love Kill. Let's not read too much into negative statements. As a life long Gopher FB fan I am very thankful JK came here 5-years ago. He saved this team by changing the culture to something I can be proud to support. I love Jerry Kill. However, I can feel that way and still wish he would now just go away. It doesn't mean I think he will sabotage the team, it doesn't mean I just don't "get it" or what he did. It just means I am tired of him popping up over and over and taking the focus from where it should be. I once liked Magic Johnson too - but he kept saying he was going away and NEVER did - always there. I got sick of that too. Doesn't mean he wasn't a great player - he just never knew when to go away. I love you Jerry - now just go away.

Agreed.

Why would having him back as an assistant coach be a good thing?

This. Hope he sees the "cause and effect" there and continues to look and feel good.

Wrong with out Kill the Village would be at least 5 years out. Thanks Jerry.

Kill is the only one who wanted it?
Kill pushed the agenda more than anyone else could of?

Seriously, I'm interested to know what makes you think this?

I have no doubt he played a big role in getting it done, but I don't know why you would assume someone else couldn't have done the same?

I think he's referring to Dan O'Brien's former job as Director of Football Operations.

That's a tougher job than HC. You have to be one step ahead of the HC and program.

A. With his health issues he should have never been hired...
B. When things went South last year he came across as a whiny little kid
C. With his Herbert Hoover conservative mind set he would have never changed the coaching embalance with Limegrove as OC and OL.
D. His emergence on the sidelines of the Michigan game
was ridiculous. It looked like he was still trying to coach.
E. " I love Minnesota ,this will be our home" this is what he said at the Craguns Golf Outing. He never did buy in Minnesota, he rented. Then bolted after he resigned to his lake home in Southern Illinois..
F. His.job lobbying at the U.

I think the issue is complicated by how and why Kill left. He wanted to keep coaching, but his health would not allow it. So, he may feel like he doesn't have closure with the Gopher program. If Kill had coached at the U for another 5+ years and retired on his own timetable, then we would be having a very different conversation. Kill would be looked at as a respected former coach - not a meddler who can't walk away.

And, let's not kid ourselves - the man was a D1 FB coach - he's got an ego. he was part of a fairly exclusive club, and he was not able to leave on his terms. that's gotta sting.

I would expect the Athletic Department should have the right job for him that isn't football specific. Would love to have him promoting Gopher sports. He is a winner with medical issues. AD would appear to be too demanding on him although I stinkpots much of pressure on himself. A workaholic/successaholic.

Actually we do get it. Very few coaches stay around programs unless they have had serious history with it. It's not like Kill took us to the Rose Bowl and should be idolized by the U and fans. It's Claeys team and he does not need Jerry lurking around the program. As Jerry once said - next man up. Jerry sold his home and he's gone. Let him go.
