ESPN reports McQueary will not attend NE game

It just doesn't add up. If that's the case, why on earth would you stay there for this long as a coach and act like nothing happened, all while this guy was still hanging around your program?

If it's true that McQueary stopped the crime, talked to the police, Paterno, Curly and the VP he met all the check boxes...what more could he had done in his position? Did we honestly need McQueary to issue a citizens arrest, prosecute, throw him in jail, and ban him from campus on his own and with no authority? Keep in mind he is a grad assistant in his hometown and at the school he attended under people he had known almost his entire life.
 

McQueary didn't talk to the police. Nobody did. That's the whole point. This would've all been adjudicated and gone away by now if someone would've done just that.
 




If McQueary really did go to the police (which I doubt), why the hell are Paterno, Schultz, Curley, and Spanier all out of a job? If McQueary went to the police, his superiors would surely know that, and wouldn't be under any legal or moral obligation to do so themselves, and thus all should still have their jobs. Someone here is lying, and I don't think it's the terminated 84-year-old coaching legend with a previously sterling reputation.

McQueary could easily be lying; so could everyone else. No disrespect intended dpodoll, but it's also very possible that Mr.Paterno chose to take the word of the guy who coached with and for him for many years over a Graduate Assistant. Everything since could have been damage control. A bad choice by Joe Pa? Certainly, a heinous one maybe, but considering Sandusky's recent denial, not one that couldn't have been chosen.
 

We'll know soon enough whether or not McQueary talked to the police because that would have to be on record (one would think). If there gets to be a dispute over this (the police disputing McQueary's account), this is going to be one unholy mess (as if it isn't already).
 

If McQueary went to the police and said he saw the rape as it was happening I don't think charges would just be being pressed now, this would've been over with a long time ago.
 



Maybe the family didn't press charges and McQueary was "discouraged" from pressing them.

Um, how about quitting? Maybe contacting someone in the media to tell the story? I would say that would create some pretty good buzz to get it investigated more. I just can't fathom staying there this long, all while the guy you saw raping a 10 year old continues to be around the program and with kids.
 




A comment in that Chicago paper story made an interesting point: the way McQueary has been demonized in the court of public opinion (and I admit I'm certainly not very sympathetic to him) basically ensures that if there ARE more witnesses they won't be coming forward.

This is the unfortunate thing, Penn State was in need of leader who would immediately go on full media blast against the student protests and the demonization of McQueary each of which made/make it even less desirable for victims or witnesses to come forward.

Because his formative years were in an environment where abuse was largely tollerated and ignored. And those who chose to acknowledge it aloud were destroyed in short-order.

This is plausible. Hard to believe anyone could simply close their eyes to it, but if it's viewed as "institutional," a lot of individuals feel comfortable just shrugging their shoulders and saying "Don't blame me." Don't take my comments as condoning McQueary's lack of action.
