EMPTY SEATS!!! WTF

The student section has been a big disappointment, and today it was pathetic. The future of our Gopher fan base does not look bright. Those that show up are great (my daughter included), those that don't piss me off to no end. If you don't want to go to the games, then don't buy a season ticket. It is because of you 'no shows' that you will find next years student allotment reduced, and the prices increased.

I say we delete 4,000 seats from the student section next season and put up for FULL PRICE to the general public.

Dang right! I was too young to remember, but a few old-time Gopher fans said Minnesota couldn't fill Memorial, the Metrodome, and we won't fill TCF. It's just the reality of being a Gopher football fan. And to think there were people whining that TCF was built too small:rolleyes:

Agree on the Student Section

I am so tired about hearing the stand up v sit down argument with the students and the younger fans...how about just showing up like my family has for 55 f...ing years? You are so worried about whether or not someone is sitting down on third down a couple times during the game...how about getting your a$$ to games on a regular basis...no excuses, you have to walk a couple blocks and get discounted tickets...get over your hangovers and get to the game on time. The upper deck student section had less than 100 people in it at kick-off. It was 60 freaking degrees...come on. It was so fun to watch all of the student cheer for the camera as Illinois waltzed in for its' fourth TD...are you even watching the game? Get with the program. Enough said.

Student section sucked today

Empty and flat....yuck

My eight year old asked me why there was nobody sitting in the upper deck. I told him it would fill in by the 2nd quarter. WTF

Too bad that our students are such fair weather fans....meaning only show up if we are winning games? Wait a second, we just won last week and if we won this week we would be at six wins.

SHOW UP OR SHUT UP

Are you kidding? This is Big Ten football, not JUCO ball kid. The days of 'I pay tuition' went the days of Bobby Bell.
Good luck getting tickets once you graduate. You better take advantage when you can actually afford and attain tickets. Stop taking things for granted.

I will be able to get student tickets after I graduate. It's a little game I like to call, exploit the system.

1) Register for one course
2) Purchase student season tickets
3) Drop aforementioned course immediately within 100% refund deadline
4) Flash old student I.D. at gate
5) Enjoy games at a discounted price

And it's as simple as that.

SHOW UP OR SHUT UP

Stop with the terrible ethos argument. Let's not pretend like we all didn't see the "adults" leaving in droves after we were down by 10 points either so quit with the double standard. The University collects the same amount of money whether or not the students show up so I'm sure they don't care whether or not they show up. They'll probably lop off a significant portion of the section at some point, but until then why are you all whining?:cry::cry:

It's not about the $

It's not about the money.

You don't get it!

A full stadium rocks! Empty bleachers suck.

1. Bitching about leaving early is a totally different argument than empty student seats. At least they came to the game.
2. Just win? What are you talking about? Last time I checked the gophers won against Air Force, Purdue, and Michigan State at home. They gave Cal and Wisconsin a run for their money. No blowouts. So what exactly is our student section looking for? Cal and Wisconsin are both top 20 BCS teams. It's not like we are losing to Northern Iowa.

It's not about the money.

exactly we want a rocken loud stadium...a place that actually creates a real advantage to the HOME team. But when a bunch of people don't show up it says alot of things about this fan base and university to people outside the program. It says the students here don't back and support THEIR TEAM. It just looks Busch league. like not legit. if I'm a recruit and I see that and I go to another school like say Ohio state where every game is packed and loud and people are crazy for the team I'm most likely gonna wanna go there rather than here.

Miinesota is a commuter school...

Minnesota is a commuter school and as such never has had a strong student commitment to on campus athletics and it never will. I thought it odd they reserved so many seats for the students. Probably just some coach being optimistic.

Why don't we save ourselves the work and just keep this thread in a sticky at the top of the page? That way, we won't have to relive this idiotic 5-page back-and-forth every week.

Agreed, It is so stupid to talk about the empty seats all the time. GET OVER IT PEOPLE!!!! who cares. Talk about football not the damn bleachers in the upper deck.

does anyone honestly believe a full stadium is going to affect on field play?

It only takes an IQ of 90 to figure out that strategy to rip off the U and your fellow students. How are you going to do it after you grow up?

Yes

Ever play football with nobody in the stands?

Then go play to a full stadium...it makes a difference.

Why are people defending the students? We should be booing them just like our fans booed Weber.

This should be a sticky at the top of the page...because the students have sucked for the past several weeks. C'mon! Pick it up.

You guys are making this way over-complicated... If this team ever is good and watching the game doesn't induce brain loss, students will come to watch. And for the chick a couple posts above me that says that there is never any student commitment, do me a favor and go to hockey / basketball games. I gurantee that we have as many people living on campus than anyone in the country. And even if we didn't, how the hell could that involve student involvment.

Basketball crowd does not equal football

You can't compare hoops/hockey with football. There are 10,000 student tickets for football...only 13,000 total in Williams arena. I don't know how many in Mariucci.

Apparently, you did not take any ethics courses. Once you get a house you can learn to pirate cable TV, as well.

Have you ever played football??...let me explain something I played for a pretty large school and it does effect the play...now obviously I'm not gonna say its a COMPLETE game changer...BUT when it's really loud it's alot harder to a run an offense. and as a defensive player you feed off it. It gets you amped up. When your on defense and it's quiet and there's not alot of people there it sucks.

While this would have been an accurate statement in the 80's and through much of the 90's, I don't believe one can really consider Minnesota a commuter school any longer. Former president Yudof made a huge commitment towards keeping students on and near campus, and since the late 90's, the on campus student contingent has increased dramatically. While Minnesota's uniquely urban environment allows for more commuters than other big 10 schools, the majority of the student body lives on or near campus. The student turnout has been disappointing for sure, but being a commuter school is an inaccurate excuse.

Right on. The idea of attending the state's flagship university was very appealing to me, but the campus was seemed dead to me if you weren't into the greek scene in the mid 90's when I was considering colleges. I had friends who lived in the first ring while attending the U. Yudof was the real deal.

To be fair to the students, a lot of non-students headed to the gates about halfway through the 4th quarter and missed the blocked punt TD and could've missed one of those improbable, collapse victories we've been on the wrong end of so many times.

Where are all the posters who make fun of Wisconsin's student section being empty in the 1st Quarter...??? At least they show up and get into the game. Win or lose...

Minnesota should never have allotted 10,000 seats to the students. It will be 8,000 before you know it. They have attendance figures to justify it, and a budget that will require it...

I've been to 9 of the 11 stadiums in the Big Ten. Besides Northwestern and Indiana, Minnesota's student section is the lamest. I agree the product on the field has been crap for years, but a brand new stadium on campus and the section is 60% full...?? LAME.

90% of the students don't care. The ones who show up obviously do. I can't stand the 90%!

Smaller student section next year

Student attendance was horrible Saturday. There's no excuses this time (the deer opener is not a good excuse).

Yes it does make a difference. Maybe Illinois doesn't get a TD at the end of the first half if there are 10,000 fans at the closed end of the stadium screaming at them.

You need to be able to make plays regardless of who or how many are watching or you should not be playing.

Don't sell so many student tickets...I know the U wanted to embrace the students, but if they are not going to come then sell half as many tickets to them because I heard there is a waiting list for regular season ticket holders.

If they actually scan the bar code your ticket won't work...I know someone who did this for hockey and couldn't get in.
