Elliott Eliason

He's still got a LOOOOONNNNNGGGGG way to go offensively. Usually the case for big men, especially freshmen. Not sure he can ever develop into the post player we want. Probably will end up similar to colt - pretty good defensively, not really an offensive threat from the block - more of a "fit-in player" on offense. At least he rightly knows he shouldn't be trying to do anything on offense other than pass, not turn it over, and trying to get the occasional tip-in.

What makes you say this? He has a nice hook shot with good touch and he's better in the post than Colt was when he left.

For those wondering EE said in an interview he is 7'1"

Huh? I must have been asleep during all of the hook shots and post moves he's shown during the first 8 games of the season.

yeah we want a shaq, walton, lew alcinder, wilt the stilt, yeah i guess EE wont cut it so lets get rid of him rather than keep someone we dont want

Bobby Knight sure loves Eliason

I really enjoyed listening to Bobby Knight brag about Eliason. He just kept oozing and oozing about him. Bobby knows more about a potential star that most, so hopefully this board will officially quit bashing players early in their career like Eliason. Eliason is definitely in the perfect scenario. He had a redshirt year to get stronger and will get plenty of playing time based on our current and upcoming rosters this year and next. He is somewhat athletic and 7 foot 1. If he can continue to improve each year he will be fun to watch! We won a Big Ten Championship with Randy Breuer, why not Eliason?

He seems to be able to get offensive rebounds and w/o putting the ball on the floor, put the ball in the basket. That skill wasn't something that Colton could do easily. He looks like he's over seven ft tall....

The game was classic Knight. He saw a couple good things from EE early in the game, then proceeded to point out every possible good thing he did the rest of the game and ignored every mistake to try to show the audience how smart he is. Why do you think he talks about the shot fake 400 times a game?

The truth is that EE is showing improvement, but the kid has a long way to go offensively and shouldn't be counted on to score in the offense off the block, other than if he's able to catch the ball within 3 feet of the basket.

I'm not claiming Eliason is a future all-star, but no matter how you look at it he had a very good game and was instrumental in that win. More often than not good things happened when he touched the ball and the team overall looked much better when he was on the floor.

EE was on point last night, i think one thing he could improve on are his screens, to me they just seemed a little lazy but other than that he moved pretty well away from the ball. I think he had more control of the game than any of the pgs. Will be interesting to see how he plays through the rest of the year. Great win last night.

Even though BK is a jerk, I'd rather have him do the color than almost anyone else on TV. He was constantly pointing out the good qualities of EE, which was important to the overall game that the Gophers played. Regarding the shot fake, some of our guards could/should use that as an effective move....no? At least the offense seemed to have some flow to it, instead of just throwing up shots when the shot-clock was running down. Ball movement is much improved IMO.

Very impressed with EE; great basketball smarts. I also thought that he did a very good job of moving his feet on defense and pressuring the interior pass. Also saw him take Austin aside a couple of times and appear to point some things out in terms of the movement (or lack thereof) on the previous play. Seemed to play much more relaxed given that he didn't need to worry about looking over his shoulder if he made a bad play.

I'm rewatching the game and I'm not seeing mistakes by EE.

I once said in an interview that I was 6-3.
Good for you? The only way to know EE's real height is to either measure him yourself or go by what he says. I can't do the former so I'm going off of the latter.

My guess is that Knight was surprised by EE (who has zero prior reputation) and therefore continued to repeat what he saw. As far as the shot fake- I wish our players would listen and so does Tubby- he mentioned it several times last year about Hoff. No doubt Knight wants to be the smartest guy in the room on basketball -but he delivers. I can't think of anybody I would rather hear analyze a game from a pure fundamental standpoint. I came home from the game and watched the replay in to wee hours- because I wanted to see it but also because his commentary was interesting.

@AmeliaRayno: Tubby, comparing Eliason to Colton Iverson: "He's a lot different. He's better. He's for much more upside."

Go Gophers!!

People are not going to be happy about this comment...

"He's a lot different. He's better. He's for much more upside."

I hope that was a misquote or was taken out of context. It doesn't seem to be a very classy thing to not speak well of one's former players.

Follow up tweets from Marcus:

Tubby answering my question about comparing Colton Iverson to Eliason: "He's a lot different. He's better, much better." Didn't expect that.

More about comparing Eliason and Iverson: "He's more of an offensive player. He keeps the ball up. He does a lot of things extremely well."

As far as listening to BK do commentary, i would prefer him over any of the others only because he does know what he is talking about

Eliason has been very impressive these past few games. Thought he was incredibly soft the first handful. Still think he'll get tossed around quite a bit once B1G season starts, but I've got a lot more faith in him after these past 3-4 games.

He also looks like he's ready to be a leader. Very vocal, seems like he's always pointing/calling out things to his teammates. The Bizaro-Sampson.

The most singularly impressive thing about him, even more than the surprising skills he's shown is his intelligence and leadership. Talking to the ref and getting him to review a play is UNHEARD of for an unknown freshman. Directing his younger teammates as he did a few times could be key from his viewpoint with his back to the basket. It certainly shows floor smarts beyond his age.

Finally, he's much much stronger than what he showed in his videos, must have worked like the devil in his red shirt year. Plus he looks like he could add another 25 lbs of muscle. If so, he could become a post animal, like we haven't had in a very long while.

Another crazy thought. I could see RSIII, EE and Rodney splitting time. RSIII would split time between center and power forward. Getting a ton of minutes but basically getting a lot of time at his more natural 4 position. The next few games with Ralph out will be critical for Elliot. If he doesn't break down, he might put pressure on Ralph to keep his intensity up in order to hold his minutes. Ralph always appears to me to NOT like being under the asket, while Elliot looks totally natural there.

Elliot basically has 3 weeks to get ready for B1G play. Will be intesting to watch.

EE is certainly not as foul prone as Colt, that's for sure. Colt deservedly, or undeservedly, developed a rep as a fouler and it dogged his career at the U. The refs were on him like white on rice. He really couldn't catch a break. Hope he does better with the Mountain West refs.
