Doogie tid-bits: Mullen willing to come, Bellotti interested, Dungy pushing Trestman

5 million a year for Mullen and his staff will look like a steal 5 years from now. Seriously just give the guy the cash NOW!

Couldn't agree more. That is about a third of revenue gained from tickets. The rest goes to team facilities, travel, recruiting, other sports. Win, build, raise ticket prices. All good. Except for ticket holders. Ouch and Yes. Do it.

I think the $5MM a year is a bit steep, even for a guy like Mullen (or especially for a guy like Mullen?). That said, if he is actually interested and not blowing smoke, he would take a slightly lower offer as long as its still well above what he gets now.

Either way, things are getting interesting... I get the feeling Maturi knows exactly what he is doing for once.. yeah, I know, there is not a track record to back that up..but it seems like he is pulling all the strings this time, keeping us and the media guessing until he seals the deal.

Given what Feldman posted, it may very well be the behind closed doors reality Maturi is having to deal with.

I know that Mullen has great experience as an OC, is highly regarded, etc., but only two years of being a head coach is probably not worth the big bucks. Don't get me wrong, I'd be excited if he was hired, but two years isn't an established head coach or a Tubby hire to merit that kind of big $$. I'd just like to think we could do better for the money, but maybe not.

Huh? Find it hard to believe that Doogie doesn't salivate at the thought of being the first one to get the right name. That's what real journalists do. And in this day and age, it's also about clicks on sites and ratings which is where Red Smith starts turning over in his grave.

I can't even keep track anymore, but didn't he have a friend in a wedding who would be really surprised if Mullen came here about two days ago? Also, is Tubby still at Minnesota?

He has more sources without a doubt. Do they know anything or are they also relying on guesses and rumors? If they do know something, what exactly is their reason to tell Doogie anything.

Just because this is becoming my crack habit doesn't mean I'm going to praise one of the pushers.

Hey, I wasn't nominating Doogie for sainthood. Just pointing out that he's a lot more objective than some of his colleagues, and he at least gives the impression that he isn't just throwing crap at the wall in order to have bragging rights. I'm sure he would like to break the story as much as anyone else in the business. he's also about the only one tweeting who at least qualifies his sources.

LOL at your crack line

The majority of Mulluns recruits come from Mississippi, we do not have that much talent here. A small concern.

-If true on Bellotti, just sign him up already! I still think he could have been had weeks ago if we had been aggressive.

-And Dungy, we love you, but if all you have to offer is pushing Trestman, then we don't need your advice. Frankly, I've never understood why his sign-off is so important. Dungy is NFL through and through. His advice would be 10x more valuable to the Vikings.

-If that's really what Mullen is asking for, that's tough. Tubby will be expecting a raise too, there's only so much money.

-Of course they all want a say over the new AD, but you really can't give them one. Again Tubby must be kept in mind and not stepped on in this.

Tubby has a contract. He simply needs to honor it. This is about the FB program. If Tubby wins big, he will be rewarded big.

Mulligan: my main concern is to get the story right, not first... the reason to tell me anything? I've been working in this market since Dec. 1996... in 14-years, I've gotten to know quite a few people.
As for wanting to break stories, it certainly doesn't hurt w/ my "A" job at Ch. 5... but my duties include a ton of other aspects... at a non-union station, have to be able to edit, shoot, produce, write, in my case, fill-in anchor, post web stories, know what to cover (for example, getting to Bethel football yesterday)... the newspaper beat guys have way more pressure to break stories when that beat is their sole purpose.

Thanks for the, ahhh, job description. Are you going to post a full blown job analysis next?

Me too. And while we're expressing unpopular opinions I believe Dave Mona is taking this search to the next level. Seriously. Mona is a very successfull businessman who has a vested interest in the U and the future of it's football program.

My "sources" tell me these guys "sources" are a bunch of tools that have no more real information than the rest of us. But don't ask me to name my sources, 'cause I super-duper pinky swore I wouldn't mention them by name.

Bottom line is if these guys throw enough s*it on the wall, eventually something will stick. That's all they're doing. My favorite was Souhan's "Tubby to Auburn" breaking news.

I've actually spent the past hour working. What have I missed? Who's in? Who's out?

You are too thin skinned. Man up for a change. We went around in circles on this before. Each time you were responding to somebody about your credentials. I like you. I like your reporting. Just getting tired of you acting like a freeking little girl with her pigtail in a pinch.

Not attacking you, just you behavior.

Don't be naive. Minnesota is a basketball school first these days and Tubby is a power coach. Don't tell me that if they bring in a relatively unproven 2nd-year coach and pay him $3 million dollars it's not going to effect negotiations on Tubby's contract extension that Joel has been dithering around on since March. Unless we are getting Harbaugh, etc. you can expect that Tubby will at least expect his salary to be brought in line with the football coach, especially since there is zero progress on the practice facility. Tubby has a contract, but he's in year 4 of 7 and needs to extended if we want to keep him. It should have been done around April 1st and would have been anyplace else. But not with the AD in charge. So now this football search will impact any attempt get the extension done. The last thing we need is for Maturi to fix one problem while creating another, but it would hardly be shocking.

Trust me, have plenty of thick skin... have to working in the media, especially on the electronic side, and doing stuff on TV w/o Brad Pitt-like looks... but this is a very popular board, so will always defend myself.

Just like a reporter to say they have to have thick skin because they are media folk. Well, as a professional soldier, in a previous life, I can tell you that some guys looks compared to yours only adds up to vanity, not thick skin. You are making me laugh. And, I won't jump all over you for defending yourself in the future. You had me at "doing stuff on TV". Now, that's comedy. Keep it up. Reply all you want. This is my last post of the day. I need to get some sleep tonight since I will be up at about 4:am to head off to a real meeting of the minds.

Dungy can push Trestman for Indiana. Since he's apparently out for their best interest as well.

Seriously, I've never been a big Dungy fan, but this past week has made me dislike him.

If he's such a huge proponent of Minnesota Football why isn't he ever at the games?

I just posted something similar in another thread. I like Dungy as a coach, but what has he done to promote the program in any way?

Less ball-busting...more news breaking! Chop...Chop...

The only thing i can take from this thread is that Oneoldgopher is a tool.

Doogie just comes here more than journalists, and he's just a producer, not a journalist. And because he posts semi-positive posts, half the people here thinks he's a saint. When has he been right? Even if one of his random thoughts is correct, his record will still be crap.

Encouraging news - some nice prospects in there. Mullen is 38, Fulmer 60 - but either would be good hires, as would Bellotti. $5 mil a year sounds a bit steep, though, when your stadium seats only 50,000.

+1

Doogie ...thanks for the skinny as you know it. Your tweets and articles have helped on this process. Look forward to your analysis on how the pieces fit together at the end of this.
