Doogie tid-bits: Mullen willing to come, Bellotti interested, Dungy pushing Trestman

So wait ... Bellotti AND Mullen are still interested? The sky is NOT falling?

-If true on Bellotti, just sign him up already! I still think he could have been had weeks ago if we had been aggressive.

-And Dungy, we love you, but if all you have to offer is pushing Trestman, then we don't need your advice. Frankly, I've never understood why his sign-off is so important. Dungy is NFL through and through. His advice would be 10x more valuable to the Vikings.

-If that's really what Mullen is asking for, that's tough. Tubby will be expecting a raise too, there's only so much money.

-Of course they all want a say over the new AD, but you really can't give them one. Again Tubby must be kept in mind and not stepped on in this.

Dungy can push Trestman for Indiana. Since he's apparently out for their best interest as well.

Seriously, I've never been a big Dungy fan, but this past week has made me dislike him.

If he's such a huge proponent of Minnesota Football why isn't he ever at the games?

That $5 million/year for Mullen and staff is steep ... if we gave him $2.5 million/year, his OC and DC $600,000/year (I think that would put us close to the top in the country) that means we're dividing the remaining $1.3 million among the other 7 coaches (or about $185,000/year, per coach). Does anyone know what we're paying the non-coordinator assistants now?

Whoa, a few bombshells in that post by Doogie. Seems like many are very interested.

I can't get enough of the search. But I wish I didn't know that Bellotti is interested. Or that we have a shot at Mullen, too, for that matter (although his price seems out of our range). It will only cause me to be disappointed if (when?) the job ultimately goes to someone else.

What if Maturi was in Omaha to tour the childhood home of Mark Richt????

I'm a little disappointed in Dungy. Is he looking at this from the viewpoint of what's best for the University or is he trying to get one of his buddies a job?

Good gravy. I put more faith in what Doogie reports than Shooter and Justin Gaard but after all these contradictions in the media I just can't trust anything. If Bellotti was interested he should have been signed on Sunday morning.

Start a email petition to Prez B, and JMat for Mullen please

5 million a year for Mullen and his staff will look like a steal 5 years from now. Seriously just give the guy the cash NOW!

Agreed...for the whole staff that is not quite as steep as it seems, though it is a chuck of change, probably a little more then the U wants to go.

If anyone has the figures on the cost of a quality staff and how many there are, it would be helpful. Along with coordinators and position to go with others, I would think at least 15.

I think the NCAA allows for a head coach and nine assistants; that's what I was basing my calculations on. If the $5mil a year figure includes other staff members, it's definitely not as steep as I made it out to be.

But you also have recruiting coordinators and trainers.

Right, I was figuring just coaches' salaries. If the $25 million over 5 years includes all training staff/program management staff as well, get the damn thing done.

Thanks Doogie. The glass appears to be half-full today. Yesterday, it was kind of "What glass?"

That's a lot of coin for Mullen, but he's worth considering. That amount of money would buy a whole lot of top-drawer assistants.

If that's really the situation on Mullen, I say go for it. Pronto.

Mullen wanting $25 mil over 5 years which from the sounds of it would include the salary of all of his assistants. Does anyone know how much of an increase that would be compared to the last staff's compensation? I haven't seen the wages for the whole staff grouped together but if Mullen get $2.5 mil/year that leaves $2.5 mil/year for what 10 or so other coaches. That seems plausible but I may be missing something.

If Bellotti is truly still interested then what is the hold up? Mullen and staff are deserving of 4M a year at best. Bellotti is a proven successful head coach while Mullen is in the process of still proving himself as a successful head coach. I don't think it would take 4-5M to get Bellotti. Don't get me wrong, I would be thrilled with either of these two. Bellotti just seems to be a little more level headed.

I know this is not a popular opinion on this forum, but I still think Trestman would do a great job and is a good fit. He is very smart, and has proven he can execute a winning gameday game plan. He seems to know when to delegate (on defense) and when to take advantage of his own strengths (on offense). Also he is very competent and endorsements from Bud Grant and Dungy aren't given out every day. I know he is not a sexy pick, but all of the candidates come with some kind of risk and in his case it may be less than most of the others. Some have downplayed his success as a head coach in the CFL, but winning championships at any professional level is difficult, and the CFL is very competitive even if the quality of the players is just above the collegiate level. His biggest question is the ability to recruit but if he surrounds himself with solid recruiters on the staff, that should not be a problem. He is smart enough to solve whatever problems he may face, and he will not be outcoachd on gameday.

Bellotti vs Mullen

If Mullen wants $5MM than that's a good chunk of change for top-flight assistants. But Bellotti already has a proven track record that he can acquire top-flight assistants. I prefer Bellotti over Mullen but would be happy with either.

I think Dungy is looking at it from a strictly football perspective without all the hype. My gut tells me that Trestman would be the best "Coach". He is an unknown as far as recruiting goes and that would be the risk.

I think Mississippi State could easily match anything that we could offer Mullen.
