I know he is a walk-on, but I kind of feel for the guy. He hasn't played one second, even though we've blown some of these teams out on this home stand by 30+ points.

He seems to have a good attitude, and is always cheering for the team on the end of the bench. I guess it'd be nice to see him score a layup or two in garbage time, given the effort that puts in day in and day out at practice with the rest of the team. I'm not questioning Tubby, just wondering if anyone else has any insight?

I have no inside information or anything - just my personal opinion. ML and I were just talking about him at the game. He did play in exhibitions, but I don't believe he's played a second during the regular season. Is it possible that Tubby will redshirt him if he doesn't need him? I just wonder this, because he is a pretty big kid, and has decent size - if he's a player with a lot of potential, maybe that's the POA.

I'd love to get some insight from anyone that actually knows about him, please chime in!

he is red shirting, Tubby said it after the Butler game in an interview.

Talked to him a couple weekends ago, he is indeed red shirting.

Thanks! That must mean Tubby thinks he's got some potential. Even watching him in exhibition play - I was like, if this is our worst player, we have more talent that we've had in a any previous year I can recall.

In an interview I heard - Tubby said that you apply for a redshirt from the NCAA at the end of the year. For now he is keeping that option open with Dawson. He thought he might need to use DD in Anaheim due to various player shortages but that did not develop. He said he'll see as the rest of the year develops.

Not trying to sound cold hearted, but I have no sympathy for a walk-on who hasn't gotten to play in the 1st 1/3 of his Freshman year.

Maybe 30-40 point wins could translate into a couple minutes for the last guy?

You don't sound cold-hearted at all.

You sound clueless instead.

Redshirts can't play even 1 second of a game.

I think his point was (or at least its mine because I happen to agree with him) that we shouldn't feel too sorry for a guy who has a long, long ways to go as a Gopher. If he develops, it'll all take care of itself and as a freshman walk-on project a little pine riding time won't kill anyone ...for whatever reason - redshirt or not.

CRG and others: If you are not at the games you don't know that Dawson is suited up for every game, which begs the question about red-shirting. He is attentive throughout. He hasn't stolen anything, assaulted anyone or punched any of his teammates.

No one pulls for the underdog more than me (Especially with kid from my alma mater Mpls SW) but how often did Hosea Crittendon, Wade Hokenson or Brent Lawson play the 1st 10 games of their Freshman seasons? Riding the pine is the nature of the walk-on game.

As I understand it, when you walk on to the team you're told you will not play in actual games, you won't be getting a scholorship no mater how well you play, etc. I remember another kid who was looking at walking on this past summer (He'd been at Bemidgi??) and was supposedly a pretty good player. He said he was willing to walk on, word hard earn some minutes and eventually earn a scholarship down the road. Tubby told him (Paraphrasing) "Sorry, not going to happen". I forget the exact quote but in essence Tubby said the days of walk ons earning schollies at the U are over and we're already so deep there's just no extra minutes.

Again, I want to see our players succeed and enjoy themselves, I just think we're jumping the gun at this early point in his Freshman year.

Dawson was told he may be considered for scholarship in sophomore year.

"Dawson was told he may be considered for scholarship in sophomore year."

Thanks FOT, I didn't know that. Again, I hope he does well, I just don't see not playing at this point as a real issue.

With the recent news of White freeing up a scholarship and 1 scholarship left this year (hopefully little Joseph's). Could they give Dawson a scholarship for next year? It seems pretty late in the recruiting season to bring in another guy for next year.
