DL Xion Chapman commits to the Gophers

So far in the portal, we swapped DB Z. Bryan for Mich St. corner A. West. Both players ranked as .87.
We lost RB Ijeboi to Purdue, only rated an .85.
We lost Koi to Oregon, .96! 11th best transfer and #1 Safety.
We gained DT Chapman, DT Kaba, and DE TJ Bush, .92, .89, and .87 repectively.
We gained OT B. Warren from Tennessee, .87.
We gained WR Perry Thompson, Auburn, .90!

Last year, our biggest loss was OT, Daniels to Ohio St, .92. Those of you who didn't thing think we would be worse at tackle after losing him and Earsay to the pro's, I don't know.
Coming in last year, Rb Turner was a 9.0, expectations were high.
De Curtis, IOL Marshall, Tackle Tafai, WR Coleman all 8.9.
CB Nestor was an 8.8. WR Tracy 8.7 as was WR Loya, and TE Biber. RB Davis 8.6

It seems as though Anyone .87 and above either have great upside or have decent numbers and experience at their old schools and have a chance to be at least rotation guys or starters. I hope we can get more highly rated IOL, Safety, and TE.
Right now, I wouldnt have traded S Koi, for our top 4-5 players, if that is what his NIL $ brought us.

Obviously it doesn't work this way but if it were a trade offer and I was offered:

DT Chapman, WR Thompson, DT Kaba and CB West for Perich I take that deal. 4 potential starters with 3 of them at definite positions of need for a player at a position where we have some depth and potential.

Just realized you said 4 or 5 so that would also included OT Warren. Would have taken the deal at the top 4, definitely taking it for the top 5. :)

Add in that we still have Kerry Brown, Gousby, and Nestor in consideration with Koi’s 2025 performance and it seems like a very good swap!

No kidding. With Koi's play last year, I'd trade him for just one of the dlinemen.

He was horrible last year, really. His tackling was absolute garbage. He needs to go back to square one pee wee league and learn proper tackling technique. The number of times he went with a shoulder instead of wrapping up, thinking his little frame would do the trick only for the back or Wr to bounce out and take off, was a weekly thing.

He isn't physical, at all. He was out of position constantly, and it's hard to tell if that was scheme or him going off script, but terrible none the less. Just not a fan of his play style, and when he isn't jumping routes and creating turnovers, he is pretty pedestrian at everything else. His body language at the end of the year spoke volumes to me about his character. Probably the highest paid guy on the team, underperforming, acting like his shit did not stink. Good riddance.

I was counting the CB as a swap, equally rated players. Even though I think some on this site think it's an upgrade?

If Chapman, Kaba, Thompson, and Warren all start, I see your point.
But last year we had some decently rated transfer lineman that didn't upgrade the line, it was much worse.
M. Marshall and Tafai were .89, Ray was a .88. Tennessee's B. Warren is a .87 this year.

But considering the experience we have in the defensive backfield and the dire need at DT this could work out.
Koi had a down year, part of the interception numbers are just luck and opportunity, and he had some missed tackles, but he gets there much quicker than what we will see next year. Also, he was a very good returner.
Koi had 46 tackles, 2.5 TFL's, 0 sacks, and 5 INT as a freshmen.
This year 82 tackles,3 TFL's, 1 sack, and the 1 INT. He had some mental mistakes for sure, but the numbers look good. I don't remember him dropping a bunch of INT chances, they just weren't there.

If it doesn't work out with Warren this year then PJ needs to go after dudes coming up from the dakotas and such. I'd give up the approach of taking SEC recruits who are looking for new scenery.

After seeing what Indiana is doing with many unrated recruits, but who are 22-24 years old, this could be a good plan!

Agreed. I've said it ad nauseam but the legend around Koi + publicity around his signing was more important to the program than his talent or play on the field. People were acting like he was Caleb Downs out there.

To be clear I was just playing along with the hypothetical trade idea. I don't necessarily think there was an either/or situation at play here. In a perfect world we hang onto Koi and still add all the pieces that we did but that wasn't in the cards.

Koi was a good player but fair or not he didn't live up to the superstar level play that was expected from him. Said in another post that the 2025 version of Koi won't be all that hard to replace. But it still sucks that he has decided to leave.

Maybe it all comes together for him at Oregon the way it did for Bucky Irving.....maybe it doesn't.

What I'd like to know -- what we'll never know -- is who we would've gotten if Koi had stayed. We had needs; we would've brought in bodies one way or another. Who, specifically, were we able to get that we probably wouldn't have without Koi's money? I wish Fleck could let us in on that.

Agree that it would be really interesting to know but I doubt there is any coach in the country that would be that transparent about all of this. It would be fascinating to see what all is going on behind the scenes because I have little to no doubt it is way more complicated then we realize.

The crazy part is that for all these coaches this all wasn't even a thing just a couple years ago, their job has changed a ton over the past few seasons and it seems like things are still constantly changing and evolving everyday.

There are no trades, but all speculation is Koi was getting 1 million or more per year. So if that person leaves you could spend an extra $250k for 4 players per year he is gone?

Well I’ve heard here that it’s all made up numbers and no one knows so there’s that…😂😂😂

Hey @Harrymannback77,
Did you share your Koi Perich scouting report (above) with Oregon?

Might plant seeds of doubt in their investment…
