Defending the Goal Post

Thanks for pointing that out. I am going to do a lot of soul searching tonight. Here is an idea for you. It's football, relax. It's supposed to be fun. If you are getting upset over kids chopping down a goal post, I would suggest a new hobby.

Says the guy who's getting all worked up over it and posting on another team's message board.

Just trying to be silly and hopefully ease tension (because honestly we need it).

Found this bit of language on Wikipedia, because as we all know it is the source of everything:

"Usually, after the winning team claims the axe, it is custom for the team to carry the axe to one of the goal posts and "chop" it down with the axe."

So apparently, badgers trying to find new ways to go for two. See what I did there?

Again, I'm just trying to be funny. Ten years is a long time. Heck I didn't even have my driver's license then (It's kind of annoying that this is how we have come measuring this statistic). But I'm tired of being bitter, ashamed, embarrassed, hurt, and everything in between.

If the Wolverines decide to interrupt the Buckeyes singing their school song after a game, there would be a riot.
A classy team would wait.

Honestly, why are we even entertaining the discussion of breaking tradition, etc with these asshats? This is a team that proudly flaunts the slab of bacon in their trophy case... one they broke tradition and stole after losing. Get over it, Badger fans, players, coaches.

Never seen a Gopher/Badger game live and I'm old, but has this tradition been around that long? I think I remember a brawl at the end of a Gopher/Badger game in the 1960s (I was listening on the radio), but it may have been an opponent other than the Badgers.

I think the whole chopping down the goalposts thing is kind of goofy. Take the axe. Take a victory lap with all the seniors getting a turn. Head to the locker room.

We are talking Wisconsin here, class with a capital K. Horrible badger uniforms btw.

This whole thing is stupid. Just win the dang Axe and render this whole topic mute.

Given that the "tradition" of singing at the end of the game isn't even as old as the losing streak, this just makes the Gophers looks pathetic. Let them celebrate just like you would want to if the positions were reversed.

So you're saying that chart told them to?

Meanwhile as 50pound said it's a stupid tradition. Very sophomoric.

I chopped down a goal post with an axe. Very stupid. Take a victory lap and go to the locker room.

I watched this specifically because I knew it would be the biggest issue on Gopherhole. The Badgers waited until the team was done singing and they were all walking into the tunnel. They then went down to chop the goal post, as per tradition. As the Badgers went down there, the last Gophers were just entering the tunnel and they came back to defend the honor of their goal post. It was quite touching.

If the Gophers ever win the Axe again in Madison and I am there, I will personally escort them to the goal post closest to where the Badgers leave the field so they can chop it down. To the victor goes the spoils. I also guarantee nobody will care. Everyone will be far too pissed off that the axe was just lost to be worried about some college kids celebrating on the field. It is the beauty of college football. If they did not care that they won the game, they would just walk off the field. I suppose after ten in a row you could argue it is old hat, but I think the rivalry means more than that.

I always wonder why you guys like to exaggerate things on this board all the time. Does it make you feel good to tell yourself and your friends that all those Gopher fans are mad about something when really they aren't? Are you one of those that will read someone's comment on here about the badgers, totally ignore the 50 posts after it completely disagreeing with that one person, then run over to buckeyville to claim all Gopher fans believe whatever stupid statement was made by that one person?

I just don't understand how you "visiting" posters always claim 25% = majority.

I don't see a big problem with what happened. If anything, I hope that it's something the underclassmen remember next time we play you guys.

And I don't understand why the mods continue to let these guys post. I guess Packer fans all stick together.

If the head coach is involved in the scuffle, that seems significant. Andersen sounded upset. Personally, I think once the game is decided it's over until next year. If they beat us and want to fake chopping something, I'll even help 'em. I want the bad taste to linger. I'm also not a big fan of cheap shots, personal foul penalties, taunting, finger pointing, chest thumping, and dancing around after making a tackle for a 2-yard gain on 2nd-and-three. In my book, you knock your opponent down, then help him up. KAWC

This. The gophs shouldn't have gotten in their way. They should have stood there, watched and got mad so that they remember this next year and use it as motivation to go into their house and make the badgers feel that same feeling. The badgers won the game, a big game, and they should get to celebrate in a reasonable manner. Its not like they actually took out the goal post and tried to carry it out of the stadium.

If the roles and venue were reversed (Gophers barging through the players and band to chop the north goal post at Camp Randall during "Varsity"), it would end in a full-blown riot.

I think the situation is overblown a little, but one thing that bugged me about it is that was the last time for our seniors to sing the song and enjoy the moment with their band, fans, and teammates. Wisconsin could've waited until we left the field. They already got to chop one goal post down, just hang around at midfield for a while and celebrate and wait for the Gophers to clear. I don't think that's too much to ask.

Video of the nefarious incident. Regardless of tradition I like that our guys took a stand.

"...I like that our guys took a stand."

The time to do that was during the game. When it mattered.

No problem, though. We've got the axe.

Yet again.

You must be one of Nadine's Packer buddies. She welcomes all of you here.

just like how the slab of bacon was a tradition... no longer. I for one like it.

I was at the game in Madison in '94 but don't remember if the Gophers did chop down both goalposts. It seems clear the Badgers tried to wait this time. This was more a reaction to what happened two years ago which was lousy on the part of the Badgers. I didn't have a problem with the Gophers response, especially given what happened in '11. Anderson said after the game maybe it's time to revisit the tradition. I think he and Kill will talk during the offseason and this won't happen again. Bielema is gone - good riddance!

Unfortunately, this guy is right. If we are the ones holding the axe after the game, we don't need to worry about what the other team does with it. I am so sick of losing this game. 10 gosh darn times in row is ridiculous. Our "lost the axe playbook": (1) national championships (though this is still a legitimate argument when we compare overall program success, and I use it liberally), (2) at least we don't have to go back to Wisconsin after the game (embarrassed to admit it), but I do sometimes use this one), and (3) at least we don't have as little class as Wisconsin (absolutely refuse to use this one, I am so sick of us losing and then complaining that the winners aren't very nice, win the damn game and get us our axe back).

Congratulations. Your play yesterday was inspiring. Best of luck to you as you pursue your NFL career.
