Dawson Garcia returning

Meechie Johnson seems confident he will get a 6th year. His argument is this season at Ohio State shouldn't count, because he had mental health issues and left the team after playing in 10 games.

Dawson Garcia left UNC after 16 games in 2021-2022 because of a sick family member in Minnesota. If Meechie gets his waiver, would Dawson not get one because of 16 games vs 10 games? Or family hardship doesn't count as much as mental health?

I'm pretty cynical about all of this but it seems like there is a chance. Obviously a major part of this would have to be Dawson Garcia wanting to come back for a 6th year of college.
I think I would have done another year of college for a million dollars.

A couple(?) weeks ago Musselman was on with Barreiro, and was talking about the old days of the G-League when it had better talent (in his opinion) and guys were scrapping and fighting to try to make the league getting paid at a rate of like $35k a year or less.

Compare that now with what you get paid at the top level of DI?? No-brainer you stay in college as long as you possibly can unless you know you're good to make the league

Murmuring is that is all but a done deal.
If they were going to approve this for any player with eligibility left starting in the 2025-26 season ... then they'll have to approve a waiver for any player who wants one and used last year of eligibility in 24-25. There's no way they'd survive a lawsuit.

This would explain why people like Mike Mitchell entered the portal. He has been told there is a chance.

Sounds like somebody knows something.
Otherwise why wouldn’t Wolfson just say, “no”. Theoretically, the NCAA payout to past players would be decreased by allowing a 5th year to the guys that were freshmen around 2019. The court case mandated in July 2021 payments of $2.75 billion to athletes who competed prior to that date. NCAA biggest payout would have been to the more recent enrollees already in college 2019-2020. Those athletes could claim the most from the potential upward trajectory of NIL money. By allowing them income in a 5th year, they would be off NCAA payout. Just a theory.

Thinking about the guy transferring to Michigan if he doesn't get a guaranteed contract in the pros. The college pay sitautions are, in general, MUCH more secure and known than going pro, where who knows where you end up and to what extent it'll be a sure thing. I can see how players would stay in school now as preferable to going pro. I think Garcia and a lot of guys would jump at that chance.

Whether we like it or not the ultimate model for sports in America is to have a modified European model where sports are separated from educational institutions. Look for more and more educational institutions to close their sports programs since it will no longer benefit them in enrollment.

I am seeing the increasing possibility that the Garcia staying a Gopher for one more year- actually has a shot. What if our line up were:

Garcia
Crocker Johnson
Omot
Evans
Asuma

How would that compete in the Big Ten (assuming proper depth is acquired)?

.500 possible in B10 and in hunt for a tourney spot

If there is any credence to my prev post, I would anticipate the NCAA to make its announcement allowing a 5th year of eligibility after the NBA draft day 2–after June 26. There must be some stipulation in the NCAA settlement regarding athletes to be paid over “four years”. Allowing 5 years going forward would take that class of freshmen prior to July 2021 decision off the books..

Impossible to say given all the question marks on our guys and the unknowns of what all the other teams are going to end up looking like in the Big Ten. But on paper that certainly looks like a solid starting 5, or at least one with the potential to be good.

Would all depend on depth, but that's a very solid starting 5.

Also- I don't see Dawson wanting to play center, certainly not full time. We could close with that lineup but would need a couple of bigs for sure.
